To stream a podcast MP3 to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a broadcast in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and private stream key, then send the MP3 audio alongside a video feed. If you have no live camera footage, a looped cover image can provide the visual. YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports AAC or MP3 audio, recommends RTMPS, CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; it does not establish special India-specific encoder settings.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel with access to the live-stream setup shown in YouTube Studio. Check the current Live Control Room prompts for your account; the general setup guidance does not establish India-specific eligibility. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  • FFmpeg installed with an H.264 encoder such as libx264. The example below assumes that encoder is available in your FFmpeg build; see the FFmpeg documentation.
  • Your podcast MP3 and a still image you have the right to use, such as podcast cover art. A still image is one practical visual choice, not a YouTube requirement.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the video and audio you plan to send. YouTube advises choosing a reliable quality based on upload capacity and testing before the event. YouTube encoder settings

Create a YouTube Live broadcast and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open Live Control Room. Follow the current on-screen setup for the broadcast.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. YouTube describes entering these into the encoder’s server and stream-key fields. Create a live stream with an encoder
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or share a script containing it. Use the current broadcast’s ingest details, and confirm their required URL format in Live Control Room rather than assuming every account displays the same format.

Choose the audio, video and transport settings

YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four). For stereo audio, it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build, account or network will behave identically. YouTube encoder settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP that encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Use the protocol and destination compatible with the server URL provided for your broadcast. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance

The example below converts the MP3 audio to AAC and creates H.264 video from a looped still image. The 30 fps, 1,500 kbps video settings are illustrative rather than a YouTube-prescribed profile; adjust the video bitrate to suit your upload capacity and the guidance for your chosen resolution. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP (-g 60) is two seconds.

Run FFmpeg with a still image and podcast MP3

This is an adaptable template, not a tested command. Replace the input filenames and supply the actual server URL and key from Live Control Room. Avoid putting a real key directly into a public script or command history; a private environment variable or secret store is safer.

INGEST_URL='paste-the-server-url-from-YouTube-here'
STREAM_KEY='read-this-from-a-private-environment-variable-or-secret-store'

ffmpeg -re -i 'podcast.mp3'
  -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i 'cover.jpg'
  -map 1:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 1500k -maxrate 1500k -bufsize 3000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -shortest -f flv "${INGEST_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}"

Check the output URL construction against the exact ingest details shown for your broadcast. The template’s video settings and URL assembly may need adjustment for your FFmpeg build or the format YouTube supplies.

Check the preview, go live and monitor the stream

  1. Start FFmpeg and confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room and the audio is audible.
  2. Follow YouTube’s current prompts to start the broadcast. Watch stream health while it is live.
  3. When the broadcast is over, stop FFmpeg and end the stream in Studio as appropriate.

YouTube advises testing in advance with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. For a podcast with a still image, check the actual audio and the full ingest workflow before the event. YouTube testing guidance

India-specific considerations

This method follows YouTube’s general encoder setup. The cited guidance does not establish an India-specific FFmpeg configuration, ingest endpoint or eligibility rule. Use the settings and availability prompts shown in your own Live Control Room rather than assuming that a separate regional configuration applies.

  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

If you plan to include music, clips, guest recordings or cover art, make sure you have the rights needed to use them in a live broadcast. A live stream’s technical setup does not grant permission to use copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content policies in Studio before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube does not receive the stream The server URL or key is incorrect, the URL was assembled in an incompatible format, or the selected protocol does not match the supplied ingest details. Copy the current broadcast’s server URL and key again from Live Control Room, keep the key private, and verify the destination format against the details shown there.
The preview appears but there is no sound The audio input was not mapped or the source file has an unexpected audio stream. Confirm that podcast.mp3 is the intended input and that the command maps 0:a:0. Check that audio is audible in the preview before going live.
The stream starts but buffers or has poor health The outgoing bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the network may be unstable. Use a lower video bitrate appropriate to your connection and test ahead of time. YouTube recommends selecting a reliable quality based on upload capacity.
The command fails with an encoder error The FFmpeg build may not include libx264. Check available encoders for your installation and use a compatible H.264-capable build; consult the FFmpeg documentation.
The stream ends before the expected time The input MP3 may have finished or the FFmpeg process may have stopped. Check the process and the input duration. The example is for streaming the supplied audio file, not automatically scheduling or replaying it indefinitely.
