Store hemp THC edibles in their original child-resistant package, locked away and out of sight and reach of children and pets. Keep them separate from ordinary food and drinks, reseal the package after each use, and put it back in secure storage immediately. “Hemp” on a label does not mean a product is non-intoxicating.
Why hemp THC edibles need secure storage
Gummies, chocolates, cookies, and other edibles can look like familiar treats. The FDA warns that some delta-8 THC products are labeled simply as hemp products, which can mislead people who associate hemp with non-psychoactive products. THC edible strength may also be difficult to measure and can be unknown or inaccurately labeled, according to the CDC.
Children can mistake an edible for ordinary food, and pets can reach products left within their access. Child-resistant packaging is a useful barrier, but it is not a substitute for locked storage.
A safe storage routine at home
- Keep the edible in its original child-resistant package. Do not transfer it to an unmarked jar, snack container, or other food packaging. Original packaging helps adults identify what the product is and preserves its labeling.
- Reseal it completely after every use. Then return it to secure storage right away rather than leaving it on a counter, table, or bedside surface.
- Lock it away, out of sight and reach. Use a locked child-resistant container, cabinet, or other storage location that children and pets cannot access. A locked cabinet or drawer should remain locked consistently.
- Keep it separate from regular food and drinks. Avoid storing edibles on a pantry or refrigerator shelf with snacks, where someone could mistake them for ordinary food.
- Make the routine clear to other adults. Tell caregivers and visitors who may handle the product where it belongs and that it must be secured immediately after use.
- Dispose of remnants and packaging securely. New York State advises putting cannabis waste in a closed-lid trash container out of reach of children and pets; do not leave edible scraps where they can be found.
Avoid products in packaging that imitates familiar branded foods or snacks. The FDA has warned that copycat packaging can make THC products especially easy for children to mistake for ordinary food.

Which storage method should you use?
Choose a method based on who can reach it, whether it can stay locked, whether the original package will fit inside, and whether adults in the household can operate it reliably. Guidance supports these categories, but no specific lockbox or lock style has been evaluated as preventing all access.

If your usual cabinet is accessible, consider a medication lockbox that fits the edible in its original package. It adds a barrier; it does not replace careful handling or guarantee that access is impossible.

What to do if a child may have eaten a THC edible
Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 promptly for guidance; do not wait for symptoms. The FDA and CDC also advise calling this number after a suspected ingestion. If the child has serious symptoms or needs emergency help, call 911. A child who may have ingested cannabis should be assessed by a physician or emergency department, particularly if the child acts unusually or is or feels sick, according to the FDA.

What to do if a pet may have eaten a cannabis edible
Contact a veterinarian, local animal emergency hospital, or animal poison control center immediately. The FDA lists possible effects in pets including lethargy, depression, heavy drooling, vomiting, agitation, tremors, and convulsions. Keep the package available so you can tell the professional what the product contains, if doing so does not delay getting help.
What exposure figures can—and cannot—tell you
Poison-center calls, poison-center managed cases, and emergency department visits measure different things. They have different reporting periods and geographic scopes, so their totals should not be added together or treated as directly comparable.

These counts show why prevention and a ready response matter, but they do not predict the risk for a particular household.

Local rules for hemp-derived THC, cannabis labeling, and lawful products vary. The storage guidance here does not establish that a product is legal or verify its stated THC amount. Health Canada’s recommendation for legal edible cannabis products in plain child-resistant packaging containing no more than 10 mg THC per package is Canadian context, not a universal U.S. product limit.
