Store board games indoors in a dry, stable spot away from direct sunlight, heat, dampness, and leak risks. Keep boxes supported and uncrushed, and return small pieces to their tray or a fitted organizer. The right setup protects paper and components while making games easy to find and put away.
Choose a safe place for your games
Light can permanently damage paper-based materials: prolonged exposure may cause fading, yellowing or discoloration, embrittlement, and other changes, according to the Library of Congress. Keep games away from direct sun and intense light, including when choosing a shelf or display area.
Pick a dry indoor location, away from radiators and other heat sources, damp walls, and likely water leaks. Avoid attics, basements, and other places prone to environmental extremes. These are sensible precautions informed by preservation guidance; the Library of Congress discussion concerns framed paper materials, not board games specifically. Do not store valuable paper-heavy games directly on the floor.

Arrange boxes so they are supported and do not have heavy items pressing down on fragile lids or contents. Keep folded boards in their intended folded form unless the game’s instructions say otherwise. The Game Preservation Society describes flat storage for printed materials in its institutional workflow; that is not a universal instruction to flatten or disassemble household games.

When choosing a shelf or storage box, avoid forcing games into a tight, unstable arrangement. Leave enough room to remove and return them without bending boards or crushing box corners.
Contain pieces and protect cards
Return small pieces to their compartments
Put tokens, miniatures, dice, and other loose parts back into the original insert, tray, or compartments after play. This matters especially for delicate components: Alexandra Llewellyn warns that its natural stone pieces can chip if left loose. If the original insert does not keep pieces separated, a small-parts organizer can help. Check its dimensions and confirm it fits inside the game box before using it.

Sleeve cards when it helps
For games with frequently handled cards, correctly sized sleeves can help reduce handling wear. Check the card dimensions and sleeve fit; sleeves are an optional accessory, not a requirement for every game.

How much humidity is right?
The Game Preservation Society’s Inventory and Conservation Manual, version 0.1, issued April 2026, specifies 50–55% humidity for paper materials and outer boxes in its institutional collection. The manual describes itself as a partially developed skeleton, and that figure is not a universal household target for every board game, climate, or component material. The available guidance does not establish one consumer humidity range for home collections.

A simple storage routine
- Choose a dry, stable indoor location away from sunlight, heat sources, dampness, and likely leaks.
- Keep games off the floor when possible, especially paper-heavy or valuable games.
- Return pieces to their original tray or compartments; use a fitted organizer only if the existing insert does not contain them well.
- Sleeve cards if useful, checking the sleeves against the card dimensions.
- Arrange games on shelving or in clear or labeled storage boxes so they are easy to identify and return without squeezing or crushing them.
- Periodically check hidden or seldom-opened storage areas for dampness, leaks, or other environmental changes. No particular inspection interval is established.
