Use a non-custodial wallet: it gives you control of the keys used to access and authorize transactions for your Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP. A hardware wallet is an optional way to keep keys offline when the device is disconnected; it does not hold the coins themselves. Before funding anything, confirm the wallet supports each asset on the exact network you intend to use, back up its recovery phrase offline, and account for the XRP Ledger’s reserve requirement.
What it means to control your wallet
A crypto wallet manages keys and transactions; the assets themselves are recorded on their respective networks. In a non-custodial wallet, you control the keys. With a custodial wallet, a third party holds the keys and controls access to the funds. The XRP Ledger’s wallet guide explains this distinction at XRPL.org.
Self-custody means taking responsibility for both access and recovery. A wallet provider cannot reset a lost self-custody key or recovery phrase. Ethereum.org says a compatible wallet app can restore access from a recovery phrase, but losing the phrase or keys can mean losing access permanently: Ethereum wallet FAQ.
Choose between a software and hardware wallet
Software wallet
A software wallet runs on a phone or computer and is generally convenient for regular access. Its keys are handled digitally, so protect the device and wallet account, and follow the wallet’s guidance for keeping the recovery phrase safe.

Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to isolate keys from a phone or computer while it is offline. It can reduce exposure of keys to an internet-connected device, but it does not remove the need to protect the recovery phrase or verify transactions. Ethereum.org recommends hardware wallets for offline private-key storage in its security guide; XRPL.org describes the device-and-key distinction in its wallet guide.
Neither category is automatically right for everyone. Consider how often you need access, how you will keep the keys safe, and whether you can reliably maintain the backup. A hardware device is optional, not a requirement for self-custody.

Check support for all three assets before choosing
Do not assume that a wallet supporting one coin also supports the others, or that support for an asset includes every network or token variant. Confirm current compatibility in the wallet maker’s documentation before depositing or sending funds. Official starting points include the Bitcoin.org hardware wallet chooser, Ethereum.org hardware wallet directory, and XRPL wallet guidance. Listings and supported features can change.
Recommended Free Tools
For any device or app, check support separately for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, as well as the exact network or token you plan to use. The official sources establish wallet categories and selection resources; they do not establish that a particular hardware model supports all three assets and every variant.

Set up the wallet and protect its recovery phrase
- Select a non-custodial wallet. Confirm that you, rather than a service provider, control the keys, and check current asset and network support.
- Create the wallet using its official app or device instructions. Keep the recovery phrase private and record it offline using a method appropriate to the wallet maker’s instructions.
- Do not share or upload the phrase. Ethereum.org warns: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” Anyone who obtains the phrase may access the accounts and move the assets. Never provide it to a support agent or enter it on an unsolicited website.
- Avoid cloud-exposed copies. Ethereum.org warns against screenshots that could sync to cloud storage. Treat the phrase as a backup key, not ordinary account information.
- Confirm the backup and recovery method before depositing. Know which compatible wallet app or device can restore access, and follow the wallet’s own instructions. A lost device may be replaceable if you have the phrase; a lost phrase or key may not be.
- Send a small test transaction if appropriate. Verify the destination, asset, network, and wallet display before moving a larger balance. Sending to an unsupported network or address can make funds inaccessible.
Account for XRP Ledger reserves
An individually controlled XRP Ledger account on Mainnet has an on-ledger reserve requirement. XRPL’s current documentation lists a 1 XRP base reserve and a 0.2 XRP owner reserve for each applicable ledger object, such as a trust line. These are protocol parameters, not a wallet fee or a guarantee that the same settings apply elsewhere. Reserve settings may change through Fee Voting, and other networks may differ. Check the current XRPL reserve documentation and wallet interface before creating or funding an account.

For a self-custody wallet, recovery depends on the keys or recovery phrase and a compatible restoration method. Ethereum’s FAQ notes that a compatible wallet app can restore from the seed phrase, but there is no provider reset if the phrase or keys are lost. XRPL.org gives the same warning for XRP Ledger accounts: “If you lose your keys, you are locked out of your XRP Ledger account and there are no recovery options.”

This differs from a custodial service, where the provider holds the keys and manages account access under its own processes. That arrangement may offer a provider-mediated recovery path, but it is not self-custody: you depend on the service to access the assets.
