To stop YouTube videos from starting while you browse, turn off Playback in feeds. To stop a related video from starting after the one you are watching ends, turn off Autoplay. These are separate controls in the YouTube app; iPhone also has a system-level setting for video previews in apps.
Stop videos from playing while you browse YouTube
YouTube’s Playback in feeds setting controls previews in the Home feed and search results. When enabled, videos can begin playing muted with captions as you scroll. YouTube documents three choices: Always on, Wi-Fi only, and Off.

- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Playback in feeds.
- Select Off to stop feed previews, or Wi-Fi only if you want them only when connected to Wi-Fi.

Stop the next video from starting automatically
The separate Autoplay setting controls whether YouTube starts another related video after the current one ends.

- Open a video in the YouTube app.
- On the watch screen, tap the Autoplay switch at the top of the player to turn it off.
You can also open your profile picture, tap Settings, then Autoplay, and switch it off. YouTube says this setting can differ between devices, so check the iPhone app even if Autoplay is off elsewhere.

Turn off video previews across iPhone apps
If you also want to stop previews in other apps, use iPhone’s system-level motion setting. Apple describes it as controlling automatic video previews in apps such as the App Store; it is distinct from YouTube’s own feed and next-video settings.

- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap Accessibility, then Motion.
- Turn off Auto-Play Video Previews.

If the Autoplay switch cannot be changed
YouTube says a parent or guardian’s settings for a supervised account can prevent the user from changing Autoplay. It also says Autoplay is off by default for users aged 13–17, who can turn it on or off where account restrictions allow.

YouTube notes that Autoplay can stop after inactivity—30 minutes on a mobile network or four hours on Wi-Fi—and that scrolling past the player or typing a comment or search prevents the next video from automatically playing. These behaviors do not replace the setting if you want Autoplay off consistently.

- A related video starts when the current video ends: turn off Autoplay.
- You want to disable previews beyond YouTube: turn off Auto-Play Video Previews in iPhone Accessibility settings.
