To block YouTube in Chrome, choose a control that matches who uses the browser: an extension can restrict a personal Chrome profile, Family Link and supervised YouTube settings can limit a child’s account, and Chrome Enterprise policies can block URLs in browsers managed by an organization. These methods have different scopes; a child-account setting is not a device-wide block, and an extension is not an organization policy.
Choose the right way to block YouTube
| Method | Who configures it | What it affects | What it can restrict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome extension | An individual Chrome user, unless an administrator controls extensions | The Chrome profile where the extension is installed | Site access, depending on the extension and its settings |
| Family Link and supervised YouTube | A parent or guardian | A supervised child account and its YouTube experience | Content level, selected channels, autoplay, and watch or search history controls |
| Chrome Enterprise URL policies | An administrator | Managed Chrome browsers or ChromeOS devices | Configured URL access; stronger filtering may require a proxy or extension |
Block the site in a personal Chrome profile
A Chrome extension is the browser-level option for an individual. Chrome Help explains how to install extensions from the Chrome Web Store and manage them under More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Depending on the extension, you may also be able to limit its site access to selected sites.
- Find a site-blocking extension in the Chrome Web Store and review its permissions and requested site access before installing it.
- Install it, then open More > Extensions > Manage extensions to review its settings and site access.
- Configure the extension to restrict YouTube, using the extension’s own instructions for its blocking rules.
- Try opening YouTube in that Chrome profile to confirm the rule behaves as intended.
Google Chrome Help cautions: “Important: Only approve extensions that you trust.” The official setup guidance explains how extensions and site access are managed, but it does not establish that any particular blocking extension is reliable. Work or school administrators may also prevent users from installing extensions.
Limit YouTube for a child
For a child’s supervised account, use YouTube’s family controls rather than assuming a Chrome setting will cover every user of the device. Parents can use YouTube Family Center or Family Link to adjust supervised YouTube settings, including content level, selected-channel blocks, autoplay, and watch or search history. See YouTube’s guidance for setting up a supervised experience and Family Link’s YouTube controls for the available options.

Block selected channels, not all YouTube
A channel block limits uploads from that channel. It does not prevent reuploads on other channels or similar channels from appearing, so it is a way to limit particular content sources—not a complete block on YouTube. YouTube explains this limitation in its instructions for blocking channels for a child.
Check the child’s eligibility and experience
Family Link can manage parental controls on Chrome and YouTube, and families may have YouTube Kids or a supervised YouTube experience available. Options depend on the child’s age and location: the relevant age is under 13 or the applicable age in the child’s country or region. Check Google’s Family Link information for the controls and experiences available to your family.

These controls apply to the child’s account or supervised YouTube experience. They should not be treated as a block on YouTube for every Chrome profile using the device.
Block YouTube in managed Chrome browsers
If Chrome or the device is managed by work or school, ask the administrator about access restrictions. Chrome Enterprise administrators can configure URL blocklists and allowlists for managed Chrome browsers and ChromeOS devices; these are organization-managed settings, not ordinary per-user Chrome controls. Google describes them as basic URL management and recommends a content-filtering web proxy or extension when stronger filtering is needed.

If YouTube is still accessible
- An extension does not appear to block the site: Check that it is enabled in More > Extensions > Manage extensions, review its site access, and confirm its own blocking rule is configured.
- A child can still see YouTube: Confirm which account is signed in and whether the control is a supervised-account setting or a channel block. Channel blocks do not cover other channels’ reuploads or similar channels.
- You cannot install an extension or change a setting: The browser or device may be managed by work or school. Contact its administrator rather than trying to override organization policies.
