To stop the taskbar from hiding, turn off the built-in Automatically hide the taskbar setting in Taskbar settings. No utility, accessory, or replacement part is needed. The steps below cover Windows 11 and Windows 10, which use slightly different layouts.
Reveal the taskbar first
If the taskbar is currently hidden, move the mouse pointer to the bottom edge of the screen, or touch that edge on a touchscreen, and it will slide back into view. If your taskbar is positioned on the left, right, or top edge, use that edge instead.
Turn off auto-hide in Windows 11
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Clear the checkbox next to Automatically hide the taskbar.
The taskbar stays visible immediately after you clear the box. If you prefer to navigate from the main menu, open Start > Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, then expand Taskbar behaviors and make the same change. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance places this control in the same Taskbar behaviors section.

- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings.
- Look for the automatic hiding option. Depending on your build and device, you may see a single control or two separate ones.
- Turn off the option that applies to your current mode. If you see separate entries for desktop mode and tablet mode, turn off the one that matches how you are using the device. If you use both modes, turn off both.
Windows 10 reached the end of mainstream support on October 14, 2025, so Microsoft’s current instructions focus on Windows 11. The Windows 10 steps above still describe the settings screen on machines that remain on that version.

Why Windows 10 can show two options
Windows 10 supports a tablet mode, and its taskbar settings can separate desktop behavior from tablet behavior. That is why some Windows 10 users see two hiding controls. Windows 11 does not offer a manual tablet-mode switch. On touch-capable devices, tablet behavior changes automatically when the device is converted to tablet form or when a keyboard is detached or attached. Microsoft’s tablet-mode guidance describes Windows 10’s manual toggle in Action Center, which is where you would go if you need to switch modes on that version.
If the taskbar still hides
- Confirm that you cleared the setting in the Taskbar settings screen for the mode you are using. On Windows 10, a second control for the other mode can still be enabled.
- On Windows 10, check whether tablet mode is on in Action Center. If it is, the tablet-mode auto-hide option is the one that applies.
- On Windows 11, if the checkbox is cleared but the taskbar still disappears, sign out and sign back in, then recheck Taskbar behaviors.
Microsoft’s official instructions do not describe any other cause for this behavior, so the built-in setting is the place to start and, in most cases, the place to finish.
