If USPS delivers mail to your home for someone who does not live there, leave it unopened, write “Not at this address” on it without changing the address, and return it to your carrier or a USPS collection box. If the mail is addressed to someone else at a different address, do not write on it; put it back in your mailbox or hand it to the carrier. The right handling depends on whether the recipient or the delivery location is wrong.
First identify what went wrong
These instructions are for USPS mail in the United States. USPS gives different directions for mail addressed to your home and mail intended for another address.
| What you received | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mail addressed to your home, but to a person who does not live there | Write “Not at this address” on the piece, leave the address intact, and return it to the carrier or a collection box. |
| Mail addressed to a different address and delivered to you by mistake | Do not write on it or alter it. Put it back in your mailbox or give it to the carrier. |
| A PS Form 3849 redelivery notice for someone who does not live at your home | If you do not know the correct forwarding address, check “Other,” write “Refused,” and return the form to the mailbox or carrier. |
These handling steps are from USPS guidance on undeliverable and misdelivered mail.

- Leave the mail unopened. Do not try to find or write in the former resident’s new address.
- Write “Not at this address” on the envelope or mailpiece. Keep the original address readable; USPS says not to erase or mark over it.
- Return it to USPS. Hand it to your carrier or place it in a USPS collection box or other mail receptacle.
USPS’s FAQ says to return former-resident mail to the mailstream with the notation “Not at this address.” The USPS Postal Operations Manual, Section 611.2, also addresses mail not intended for the recipient: unopened pieces should be endorsed “Not for [recipient], Not at this address,” or similarly. If you opened a piece by mistake, endorse it “Opened by Mistake” and sign it, then return it promptly.

Why you should not file a change of address for someone else
A change-of-address order is for the person moving or someone authorized to act for them. Do not submit one for a former resident just to stop their mail from arriving at your home. USPS explains authorization and change-of-address procedures in Change of Address—The Basics. If you receive an Official Change of Address Validation Letter even though you did not move, use USPS’s dispute process so the order can be investigated.
USPS says a mover’s mail starts arriving at a new address within 7–10 postal business days after the change-of-address start date. Its guidance lists a 12-month forwarding period for First-Class Mail, USPS Ground Advantage, and Priority Mail. Those figures concern the mover’s change-of-address service; they are not a timeline or guarantee for stopping another person’s mail at your address.

What to do if the deliveries keep coming
Return each piece using the appropriate procedure above. Keep a brief record of recurring deliveries, including the date, carrier, and whether the problem is former-resident mail or a delivery to the wrong address. Then contact USPS or file a complaint if the issue continues. USAGov’s USPS complaint guidance lists online, telephone, and in-person options at a USPS facility, including for delivery issues.
USPS’s published guidance does not promise that one return, a particular number of returns, or a specific waiting period will end repeat deliveries. A name label or mailbox sticker is not a guaranteed fix either.
