To cut down a flood of calls and texts, screen or silence unknown callers, filter unfamiliar messages, block repeat senders, and ask your mobile carrier about network-level filtering. Don’t answer, click links, or share information with suspicious callers or texters. If the activity appears targeted or includes threats, save the evidence and escalate it rather than treating it as ordinary spam.

First, work out what kind of flood you’re dealing with

“Phone-bombing” is an informal description, not a single standardized consumer term. A burst may be ordinary marketing spam, scam or phishing attempts, or targeted harassment. An automated telephony denial-of-service (TDoS) attack is one possible explanation for a severe, coordinated burst, but repeated unwanted calls alone do not prove an attack.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center describes TDoS calls as potentially arriving in tens or hundreds simultaneously or in rapid succession, including over internet-based phone systems. It identifies possible motives such as harassment, financial gain, or hacktivism; this is a description of an attack pattern, not evidence that a particular caller is using one. IC3’s 2021 public service announcement explains the scenario.

Reduce interruptions with your phone’s built-in controls

Start with the controls already on your phone. Screening and filtering can reduce interruptions, but they may also divert legitimate first-time callers or messages. Make important contacts known and check voicemail and filtered folders while these controls are enabled.

  • Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.

iPhone: screen or silence unknown calls

Apple’s iOS 27 instructions describe call-handling options under Settings > Apps > Phone. Depending on the available options, you can screen unknown callers by asking them to give a reason before the phone rings, or silence calls from unsaved numbers and send them to voicemail. Apple also describes filters for unknown callers and calls identified as spam. Menu wording and availability can vary with iOS version, region, and carrier. See Apple’s iPhone call-blocking and identification instructions.

iPhone: filter messages from unknown senders

In Messages, open Filter > Manage Filtering and turn on Screen Unknown Senders. Messages from unknown senders go to a separate folder and generally do not trigger notifications unless you allow notifications for categories. Check the folder for legitimate time-sensitive messages, including verification codes. See Apple’s instructions for filtering and reporting messages.

Android with Google Phone: block a number or private callers

To block a specific caller, open the number in the Google Phone app’s call history and choose Block / report spam. The app also has a setting to block private or unidentified numbers. That setting does not block every number missing from your contacts: calls from unsaved numbers can still get through. Steps and options can differ by Android version and installed phone app. See Google Phone’s call-blocking instructions.

Choose the control that fits the pattern

Approach Useful when Tradeoff
Block a specific number The same sender repeatedly calls or texts. Less effective when callers rotate numbers or spoof caller ID.
Screen or silence unknown calls You want fewer interruptions from callers not in your contacts. A legitimate first-time caller may be screened or sent to voicemail.
Filter unknown messages You want unfamiliar texts separated from your main inbox and notifications. You need to check the filtered folder for wanted messages.
Carrier filtering or labeling Device settings aren’t catching enough calls or texts. Availability, features, and fees vary by provider.
Third-party blocking app You want additional identification or filtering features. Review its permissions and privacy policy, especially if it accesses contacts.
Report calls or messages You want to flag suspected spam to a service or regulator. A report is not necessarily a block or an immediate resolution.

Handle suspicious calls and texts safely

  • Don’t press buttons in response to a robocall, click an unexpected text link, or give a caller personal or financial information.
  • If a message claims to come from a bank, delivery company, government agency, or other organization, verify it through a website or phone number you already know is official—not the link or number in the message.
  • For unwanted texts in the United States, report them in your messaging app, forward them to 7726 (SPAM), or submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC lists these options in its spam-text guidance.

Reporting and blocking are different actions. Apple says, “Reporting spam doesn’t prevent the sender from sending messages.” Block a known sender if you want to stop messages from that contact; reporting can separately flag the message. See Apple’s instructions for blocking, filtering, and reporting messages.

Ask your carrier for another layer of filtering

Check your carrier’s website or contact customer service to ask whether it offers call blocking, spam labeling, or text-message filtering. Some provider services are free and others may cost extra, so check the terms for your plan and region. The FTC’s unwanted-call guidance also covers provider tools and third-party call-blocking apps. Apps may block calls, send them to voicemail, or identify and report them; read reviews, inspect requested permissions, and check the privacy policy before installing one.

Blocking one number may not be enough when callers change numbers or spoof caller ID. Treat phone settings, carrier tools, and blocking as layers rather than a guarantee that every call or message will stop.

Report persistent calls, spoofing, or harassment

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission accepts complaints about unwanted calls and texts, as well as cases where a subscriber’s own number is spoofed, blocked, or mislabeled. The FCC says complaints help inform policy and may support enforcement; it does not resolve individual unwanted-call or text complaints. Filing a complaint should not be expected to immediately stop a flood. Details are on the FCC’s unwanted calls and texts complaint page.

If the calls seem targeted, preserve the information that could help explain what is happening: save call logs, message contents, timestamps, and screenshots. Contact your carrier to ask about network-level filtering and account security. If messages or calls include threats or credible harassment, contact local law enforcement; the appropriate reporting path depends on your location and circumstances. If someone faces immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

Don’t rely on the Do Not Call Registry to stop a flood

The U.S. National Do Not Call Registry is not a defense against call flooding or scammers. The FTC says scammers don’t care whether a number is registered; call blocking and labeling are more practical tools for reducing unwanted calls. See the FTC’s Registry FAQ.
