You can cancel a security-camera cloud plan and keep recording only if your exact camera system supports local storage and you enable it. A compatible microSD card may be enough for some cameras; others require a specific hub and USB drive or card. The $85 a year in the title is an individual reported saving—not a typical or independently verified amount. Work out your own savings by subtracting any required storage hardware cost from the cloud fees you would otherwise pay.
First check whether canceling cloud storage will stop recording
Cloud recording and local recording are separate features. Canceling a subscription does not automatically turn on a camera’s memory card or hub storage. Depending on the model, clips may continue to save locally, recording may stop, or the camera may retain live view and motion alerts without saving clips.
Before canceling, look up the exact camera model and any hub or module it uses in the manufacturer’s current support documentation. Confirm these details:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Whether local recording works without an active cloud plan.
- Whether storage is installed in the camera or connected through a supported hub.
- Whether it records continuously, on events, or both.
- What happens when storage fills and how much footage the device can retain.
- Which features you lose, such as cloud backup, longer history, detection tools, or search.
Local footage is stored at the camera or hub, not automatically off-site. If that device is stolen, damaged, or inaccessible, the local copy may be unavailable too.

How local recording works on different camera systems
“Local storage” is not a universal feature. Requirements and the relationship between local and cloud recording vary by model and system.
Wyze: microSD recording without a subscription on supported cameras
Wyze Support says a Wyze Cam with a microSD slot can record continuously or events-only without a subscription when a compatible card is installed and recording is enabled. You may need to review card footage manually to find a particular event. Wyze lists 14-day cloud storage, Smart Detection, and text search through recordings among plan features. Read Wyze’s local microSD recording guidance.
Blink: local storage requires a compatible Sync Module
Blink documents USB storage through Sync Module 2 and microSD storage through Sync Module XR; the storage drive or card is sold separately. Sync Module Core does not support local storage, and some legacy cameras are not compatible. Blink warns that when storage fills, new recordings stop until space is freed. Its documentation also distinguishes saving clips from using live view, motion alerts, and two-way audio, which may remain available without clip storage. Check Blink’s local-storage compatibility details.

TP-Link Tapo and Kasa: check the individual model
TP-Link’s TCB82 product page lists microSD storage up to 512 GB, with the card not included, and a separately sold Tapo H200 hub for consolidating recordings from multiple cameras. The same page lists Tapo Care cloud history and backup-related features. The TCB82 is marked “End of Life,” so its listed specifications illustrate a feature tradeoff, not a current buying recommendation. See TP-Link’s TCB82 specifications.
Kasa terms also vary. TP-Link’s support FAQ says some SD-card camera models offer free 24/7 local recording but no free cloud recording, while other listed models include limited free cloud history. Check your model rather than assuming the terms apply across the range. Review TP-Link’s Kasa recording FAQ.
Arlo: local storage may not replace cloud recording
Arlo’s support page, updated September 15, 2026, says local USB or microSD storage on specified SmartHub or Base Station models is a second recording location; it cannot replace cloud recording by itself. Only automatically triggered recordings are saved locally, while manual recordings go to the cloud. This is an important exception to the assumption that adding a drive to a hub makes a subscription unnecessary. Check Arlo’s local-storage backup requirements.

In a January 13, 2023 notice, Xiaomi said free home-surveillance recording for specified models would end on April 30, 2023, and described SD-card storage or Xiaomi Home Secure as alternatives. That notice is historical; it does not establish current terms for other Xiaomi cameras. Read Xiaomi’s notice about the specified models.

- Identify the full setup. Find the camera model and, if applicable, the exact hub or module model. A storage feature listed for one device may not apply to another in the same product family.
- Confirm plan-free recording. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions to determine whether local recording works without a subscription and which features depend on a plan.
- Get compatible storage. Use the card, USB drive, or hub type specified for your model. If the camera accepts microSD, buy a compatible card; do not assume a capacity or card specification without checking the camera’s requirements. Blink users need a supported Sync Module for its USB or microSD local-storage path.
- Install and enable recording. Follow the device’s instructions, then choose a recording mode such as continuous or event-only if the model offers both.
- Verify that a clip is saved locally. Trigger a test recording and check that it appears in local storage. Confirm how to find and play clips before ending the cloud plan.
- Review what happens at capacity. Check whether the camera overwrites old clips or stops recording when storage fills; do not assume behavior is the same across systems.
What you trade when you leave the cloud
Local recording can avoid a recurring cloud fee, but the camera’s storage capacity and features determine how practical it is. A card or drive holds a finite amount of footage. Finding an event may require manual review, as Wyze notes for card footage. On Blink, recording stops when local storage fills until you free space. Cloud plans may add longer retention, backup, detection, or search features, so compare the features you actually use rather than treating cloud and local storage as identical.
Also distinguish recording from viewing: some systems can continue to provide live view or alerts even when clips are not being saved. Verify separately which functions remain active after cancellation.

Calculate your own annual saving
The $85 figure is the personal saving claimed in the title; the camera, plan, and calculation behind it are not specified. Do not use it as a typical expected saving. Calculate yours from the recurring fee you would actually stop paying and the equipment needed for local recording.
First-year net saving = cloud fees avoided during the year − required local-storage hardware cost. In later years, if you do not need replacement hardware, the net saving may be closer to the annual fee avoided, before considering maintenance or any other costs.
For context, Lorex’s US Connect Cloud+ page listed $59.99 per year for one camera and $169.99 per year for up to ten cameras when accessed October 7, 2026. The page describes 60-day cloud retention, AI Smart Search+ beta, and local-plus-cloud storage. Those are Lorex’s listed US prices and plan details, not the unknown subscription or calculation behind the $85 claim. See Lorex’s US Connect Cloud+ page.
When keeping cloud storage may make more sense
- Your exact camera or hub cannot record locally without the cloud plan.
- Local storage is only a secondary copy, as on the specified Arlo systems, rather than a replacement for cloud recording.
- You rely on cloud retention, remote access to saved clips, backup, or search features that local recording does not provide on your model.
- You do not want to manage finite local storage or review footage manually.
If you do cancel, keep a copy of any clips you need first, and verify the plan’s current cancellation and data-retention terms with the provider. Do not assume cloud recordings remain accessible after cancellation.
