To stop Google from using your account activity to tailor product recommendations, turn off Personalized Recommendations in Data & privacy → Personalization settings → Search services. To stop Google from saving new searches and clicks, also turn off Web & App Activity (or Search Services History if that is the label on your account). Those switches do different jobs: one limits future personalization, while the other limits future collection. Neither switch automatically erases records already stored, so delete shopping searches in My Activity and set an auto-delete period if you want ongoing cleanup.
The controls you need, at a glance
Google Shopping can use searches, product clicks and other activity saved to your Google Account to recommend items, rank products for relevance and send reminders based on your preferences. Stopping that behavior requires choosing the control that matches your goal.

Google is gradually rolling out revised Search services controls. Two accounts can therefore show different names or menu layouts while offering substantially the same choices. Look for the function described here rather than relying on an exact label.

This is the setting that addresses the symptom most people notice: product results, suggestions or feeds that seem connected to something they searched for earlier. It limits recommendation personalization; it is not a deletion tool.

Use your Google Account settings
- Sign in to the Google Account whose results you want to change.
- Open Data & privacy.
- Under personalization controls, open Personalization settings.
- In Search services, find Personalized Recommendations and switch it off.
- Confirm the change if Google presents a confirmation dialog, then repeat the check on any other account you use in the same browser.
You can also open google.com/search-personalization while signed in. If the direct page is unavailable for your account, use the Data & privacy route instead. The gradual rollout means an older account may show a differently worded option, but the setting should still describe personalized recommendations or search personalization.
What changes after the switch
Google’s Search Help describes Personalized Recommendations as the control for results, curated feeds and AI responses based on what you like and on your activity. With it off, Search services stop personalizing recommendations through that setting. The change does not promise identical results for every person: language, location and the context of the current query can still affect what you see.
The switch also leaves several separate features alone. It does not remove Search Services History, delete other account activity, disable personalization in unrelated Google services, or remove Collections and saved items. It likewise does not reset language, dark-mode or result-count preferences. If your purpose is to erase what Google already knows, continue with the deletion steps below.
2. Stop Google from saving new shopping activity
Turning off recommendation personalization and stopping activity collection are separate decisions. If you leave activity collection on, new searches and clicks can still be saved even though the recommendation control is off.
Find the current activity control
- Open your Google Account and go to Data & privacy.
- Scroll to History settings or Activity controls.
- Open Web & App Activity. Accounts moved to the newer Search services design may instead show Search Services History.
- Choose Turn off to stop future saving. If Google offers Turn off and delete activity, choose that only if you also want the existing records in that activity category removed.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully: it may offer a choice between pausing collection and pausing while deleting the saved history.
When Web & App Activity is enabled, Google says it can save searches and activity from Google products and use them for tailored Search results and recommendations. The newer Search Services History label represents the same practical question for Search: whether search-related activity is retained in your account. The exact controls available depend on the account’s rollout state.

Decide whether to include Chrome and other Google-product activity
Some Web & App Activity screens include an option to save activity from additional Google products or browsing history when you are signed in. Read the sub-options before confirming. Disabling the main control prevents the selected activity from being newly saved, but it does not retroactively remove records already listed in My Activity. If you need a clean break, perform the deletion separately.
3. Delete shopping searches and product clicks already saved
Pausing a history control is not the same as deleting its contents. Use My Activity to remove the records that may be feeding old product suggestions.

- Open My Activity while signed in to the relevant Google Account.
- Use the search and filter controls to narrow the list to Google Search, Shopping or a date range.
- Review each result; a product page visit may appear as a search or as activity from another Google service.
- Select the item’s Delete control and confirm.
Deleting one record is useful when a single query is causing an unwanted reminder or recommendation and you want to preserve unrelated history.
Delete a date range or everything available
- In My Activity, select Delete or Delete activity by.
- Choose a period such as Last hour, Last day, Custom range or All time, depending on the options shown.
- Filter by the relevant Google product before confirming if you do not want to erase all account activity.
- Review the summary and confirm deletion.
Google says deletion first aims to remove the activity from view and stop using it for personalization, then begins a process intended to remove it from storage. Limited retention can remain for business, security or legal requirements. Therefore, a record disappearing from My Activity is the expected user-facing result, not a guarantee that every technical copy vanishes instantly.
Set automatic deletion for future cleanup
In Data & privacy → History settings, open the auto-delete option for the applicable activity category. Google commonly offers 3 months, 18 months or 36 months. Select the shortest period that still lets you keep history you genuinely need, then save the choice. Auto-delete handles records that reach the selected age; it does not remove newer activity immediately and does not clear local browser history.

4. Reduce personalization when you are signed out
Account controls apply most directly when you are signed in. Google also documents search customization for signed-out searches, so a private window or a separate browser profile can still show different results from your account-controlled searches.

Turn off Search customization
- Open Google Search settings while signed out, or open the Search settings menu in the browser profile you want to change.
- Find Search customization.
- Turn the option off and save the setting if prompted.
This reduces the use of search-related activity for signed-out customization. It does not change the account’s Web & App Activity setting, and it cannot erase records already stored in your Google Account.
Use private browsing for a temporary session
Open an Incognito or private window when researching a gift, medical product or other topic you do not want associated with the normal browser session. Private browsing limits the window’s local history after it closes, but it does not make you anonymous to the sites you visit, your network administrator or your internet provider. If you sign in inside that window, account-based controls and activity saving can apply again.
Clear ordinary browser history separately
My Activity and browser history are different stores. Even after Google-account activity is deleted, the browser may retain visited product pages, cookies, cached data or autocomplete entries. Open your browser’s history and privacy settings, select the relevant time range and clear the browsing data you do not want kept on that device. On a shared computer, check every browser profile rather than assuming one deletion covers all users.
Why product results may still look tailored
Turning off Personalized Recommendations removes one source of tailoring, not every source. Google’s Search Help says results can still vary with your current context and with information you save. Language and location are explicit examples: a query made in one country, city or language can return different products even when recommendation personalization is disabled.

- Current query: The words, filters and category in the search itself influence ranking.
- Location: Regional availability and local signals can change which merchants or products appear.
- Language: The language of the query and account can alter product descriptions and ranking.
- Saved items: Collections and other saved content are not removed by the recommendation switch.
- Other Google services: Personalization settings outside Search have their own controls.
- Local browser data: Cookies, history and autocomplete can make a device appear to “remember” a product even after account activity is cleared.
These remaining differences do not mean the switch failed. They reflect settings and context that the Personalized Recommendations control is not designed to remove.
Choose the smallest change that meets your privacy goal

You can combine these options. For example, someone who wants no future account-based shopping profile can turn off Personalized Recommendations, pause Web & App Activity, delete existing Shopping and Search records, select a short auto-delete period and use private windows for shared-device research.

Use this checklist after making changes so you know which layer has been addressed:
- Personalized Recommendations shows off under Search services.
- Web & App Activity or Search Services History shows off if you chose to stop future collection.
- My Activity no longer lists the shopping searches or date range you selected.
- Auto-delete displays the period you chose: 3, 18 or 36 months.
- Search customization is off in any signed-out browser profile where you need that protection.
- Browser history, cookies and autocomplete have been cleared separately on shared devices.
- You tested while signed in to the intended account; another account in the same browser can have different settings.
Troubleshooting common surprises
The Personalized Recommendations switch is missing
Google is introducing the Search services controls gradually, so your account may still use older labels. Open Data & privacy and look for Personalization settings, Search services, Search personalization or a similarly named recommendation control. If the direct page at google.com/search-personalization does not expose the option, wait for the account’s interface to update and use the available Activity controls in the meantime.
Recommendations continue after you turned personalization off
Check whether you deleted old activity, whether another Google Account is signed in, and whether the browser is supplying local history or cookies. Also remember that location, language and the current query remain valid sources of result differences. Turning off one account’s control cannot change a second account’s settings.

My Activity is empty, but the browser still suggests products
Clear the browser’s history, cookies, cached files and autocomplete entries for the affected profile. Those records are held locally and are not removed when you delete Google-account activity.
I paused Web & App Activity but old recommendations remain
Pausing stops or limits new saving; it does not automatically delete the history already collected. Return to My Activity and delete the relevant items or date range. If deletion is complete but a result still differs, evaluate the non-history factors—language, location, current context and saved items—before changing more account settings.
I deleted activity and want to know whether every copy is gone
Google’s documented process removes the activity from the user-facing view and stops using it for personalization before beginning storage deletion. The company notes that limited retention may remain where business, security or legal obligations require it, so the practical confirmation is that the records no longer appear in My Activity and are no longer used for personalization.

Use Personalized Recommendations to stop Search from tailoring recommendations from your activity. Use Web & App Activity or Search Services History to control future saving. Use My Activity to remove the past, and configure auto-delete so the same cleanup happens on a schedule. For signed-out or shared-device searches, turn off Search customization, use private browsing and handle browser history separately. Results can still vary by language, location and current context, so no single switch guarantees identical product listings for everyone.
