To stop an AI service from using new conversations or social content to improve its models, turn off that service’s training or model-improvement control, use its temporary or private mode for sensitive prompts, and avoid optional feedback when the service says feedback may be reused. Repeat the process separately for every account. Turning training off normally affects future use; it does not automatically delete saved chats or remove information already incorporated into a trained model.
What opting out actually changes
AI apps can handle several different data flows at once. A setting labeled “improve the model” may control training while leaving chat history, personalization, safety monitoring, or account records intact. A social network may separately use public posts, comments, photos, and captions as training material. Feedback buttons can create another exception even after a general training switch is disabled.
Use this four-part approach:
- Disable model training or improvement in each service’s privacy or data-controls menu.
- Use a temporary or private conversation mode before entering sensitive information.
- Do not submit optional thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or written feedback when the service warns that feedback can be used for training.
- Delete stored conversations separately if deletion, rather than future training prevention, is your goal.
An opt-out is not a universal switch. A setting in one company’s app cannot control what another company does with data submitted there or posted on a different social network.

Stop ChatGPT from using new chats to train models
Turn off “Improve the model for everyone”
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile or account menu.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
- Find Improve the model for everyone and switch it off.
- Return to the conversation only after confirming that the control shows the disabled state.
OpenAI’s stated effect is specific: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The wording is about new conversations, not a retroactive purge. Conversations already saved in your history remain there unless you delete them through the chat interface.

Use Temporary Chat for particularly sensitive prompts
Temporary Chat is a stronger privacy choice for a single conversation. It does not appear in history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve models. OpenAI says Temporary Chats may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. That retention window means “temporary” does not mean “immediately destroyed” or “invisible to every safety process.”
Start a new Temporary Chat before entering the sensitive material; switching modes after you have already sent a message cannot undo the earlier submission. Avoid pasting passwords, authentication codes, private medical records, confidential client documents, or personal identification numbers even in a temporary session.
Consider the Privacy Portal request
OpenAI also provides a Privacy Portal request labeled “do not train on my content.” Use that route when you want to submit a formal privacy request in addition to checking the in-product setting. A portal request does not change the separate task of deleting conversations from your account.

OpenAI says inputs and outputs from business, enterprise, education, healthcare, and API products are not used for training by default unless the organization opts in. That default differs from the consumer control described above. If your employer, school, or developer account is managed by an organization, ask its administrator which retention and training choices have been enabled; do not assume that a consumer-account setting applies.
Feedback can be a separate decision
If you send a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, written comment, or other voluntary evaluation, read the notice attached to that feedback. Training controls and feedback handling can be separate. Do not provide optional feedback about a sensitive conversation when the service says it may be reviewed or reused to improve models.
Opt out of Grok and xAI training
Change the setting on X
- Open X and go to Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy and Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Choose Grok and Third-party Collaborators.
- Turn off Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
X says that opting out still lets you use Grok. Its stated effect is that personal data about your interactions with, inputs to, and results from Grok will not be used to train or fine-tune Grok. The control also addresses public data in the same setting, which is why it is broader than a private chatbot switch.

Do not submit feedback after opting out
X documents a feedback exception: feedback can be used for training if you submit it even after opting out. Treat the training switch and the feedback control as separate choices. If a conversation is sensitive, skip the rating and written explanation.

Make your X account private when public posts are a concern
Making an X account private prevents its posts from being used to train Grok and xAI’s underlying models, according to X’s guidance. This changes the audience and discoverability of future posts; it is not the same as deleting posts that are already on the account or removing information copied elsewhere.
Change the setting on Grok.com
- Sign in to Grok.com.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data.
- Open Improve the Model.
- Disable the setting and verify that it remains off when you leave the page.
On mobile, the path is Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model. xAI says new conversations after opting out are not used for training. Its Private Chat mode also excludes Private Chat content and interactions from model training.
Check regional limits for unauthenticated use
xAI warns that unauthenticated use may lack an opt-out in some regions outside the European Union and the United Kingdom. If you are using Grok without signing in, look for the control before entering data. If no control is available, do not submit information that you would not want used under the service’s default terms.
Object to Meta’s use of Facebook and Instagram content
What the European objection concerns
The Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information reported that Meta planned to use public posts, comments, photos, and captions from adult Facebook and Instagram users for AI training, including past material. The documented route applies to the European situation described by that authority; it is not a global opt-out promise for every Meta user.

European users were offered an objection process through Facebook or Instagram forms and in-app prompts. Follow the prompt shown in your own account rather than relying on an old screenshot or a menu from another country. Meta can change the location and wording of the form.

Use Accounts Centre for linked accounts
When Facebook and Instagram accounts are linked, the authority said one objection in Accounts Centre may cover both. Verify the accounts listed before submitting. Content posted on another person’s account can depend on that account holder’s objection, so objecting from your own profile may not cover a photo, comment, or caption published under someone else’s account.
Understand the timing
The Hamburg authority stated that an objection lodged after training begins is prospective only. Data already incorporated into a model cannot currently be removed with existing technology. This is why the authority’s commissioner, Thomas Fuchs, urged people to object “in good time.” An objection can stop future use where it applies, but it cannot reliably rewind the influence of material already used in training.
Non-users can still be affected
The authority also warned that people without Facebook or Instagram accounts could be affected by third-party data Meta acquired for training. If you do not have an account, you may not see the same in-app objection route. The authority described Meta’s reliance on legitimate-interest grounds under GDPR Article 6(1)(f), but the availability and outcome of a legal objection depend on your location and circumstances.

Training or model improvement
This determines whether submitted material may be used to improve or fine-tune a model. It generally applies going forward from the time you disable it. The exact scope depends on the service: a chatbot switch may cover new chats, while a social-network setting may also cover public posts and related interactions.
Personalization and memory
Personalization can use information to tailor responses or recommendations without being identical to model training. Temporary Chat on ChatGPT does not create or update memories, but turning off model improvement alone does not imply that every personalization feature is disabled. Inspect those controls separately when available.
Feedback
Ratings and written comments can be handled under a separate policy. X explicitly warns that feedback may still be used for training after an opt-out. Other services may present a similar notice at the moment you submit feedback. If you want the smallest possible data trail, do not volunteer feedback on sensitive content.

Deletion
Deleting a conversation or post is a separate action from disabling training. OpenAI explicitly says that existing chats remain in history when the improvement setting is off. Use each service’s conversation, post, or account deletion controls when your objective is removal from the service’s stored records. Deletion still cannot guarantee that information already copied, quoted, or incorporated into a trained model will disappear from that model.
A practical privacy workflow for every AI app
- Inventory your services. List every chatbot, writing assistant, image tool, social network, browser assistant, and mobile AI app where you submit personal information.
- Open the privacy or data-controls menu. Look for labels such as “Improve the model,” “Use my content to train,” “Model improvement,” “Data sharing,” or “AI training.”
- Read the scope statement. Determine whether the switch covers future chats only, public posts, uploaded files, interactions, or service feedback.
- Disable training. Save the change and reopen the page to confirm that the disabled state persisted.
- Choose private mode before sensitive work. Use Temporary Chat, Private Chat, or the equivalent before sending the first message.
- Skip optional feedback. Do not assume a rating is covered by the main training switch.
- Delete older material if necessary. Remove saved chats, posts, uploads, or account data through their separate controls.
- Record regional or account restrictions. Note whether the setting requires a signed-in account, is available only in certain countries, or depends on an administrator.
- Recheck after major updates. Services can rename menus, add new data categories, or introduce separate controls for new AI features.
What to do when the opt-out is missing or does not seem to work
The switch is not visible
Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and using the official app or website. Look under both privacy and data-sharing sections. For Grok, unauthenticated users in some regions outside the EU and UK may not receive an opt-out. For Meta, the documented objection route is region-specific and may appear only as an in-app prompt or form.
The setting keeps reverting
Take a screenshot or note the date after saving, then reopen the same menu. Check whether an organization administrator controls the account, whether you changed a different profile, or whether the service has separate web and mobile settings. Until the disabled state is confirmed, avoid sending sensitive data.
You already submitted a sensitive conversation
Disable training immediately, delete the conversation where the service provides a deletion control, and avoid submitting feedback about it. If the service offers a privacy-portal request, file it. These steps can limit future use and remove stored copies where supported; they cannot guarantee removal from a model that has already incorporated the material.
You want to protect public social posts
Use the platform’s public-data or AI-training control, not only a chatbot setting. On X, the Grok and Third-party Collaborators setting covers public data as well as Grok interactions, and making the account private prevents posts from being used to train Grok and xAI’s underlying models. For Facebook and Instagram, use the applicable objection process in your region and check linked accounts in Accounts Centre.

- Opt-outs are service-specific. Disabling training in ChatGPT does not change Grok, Meta, or any other app’s practices.
- Most controls are prospective. They generally govern data submitted after the change, not material already collected.
- Safety retention can remain. ChatGPT Temporary Chat may be retained for up to 30 days for safety.
- Private modes have boundaries. They reduce training exposure but do not make a service exempt from every safety, legal, or operational retention process.
- Feedback can override expectations. A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or written comment may be handled separately.
- Legal objections vary by location. The Meta objection described by the Hamburg authority is tied to the European context and does not establish a worldwide procedure.
- Model deletion is not currently reliable. Once data has influenced a trained model, removing that influence is not generally available through an ordinary account setting.
Best practices for prompts that contain personal information
Controls are useful, but the safest data is data you never submit. Remove names, addresses, account numbers, precise dates of birth, passwords, authentication codes, and unnecessary medical or employment details. Replace them with neutral labels such as “Customer A” or “Project B.” Crop faces and metadata from images when they are not needed. Paste only the smallest excerpt required to solve the problem, and avoid uploading a complete database when a few representative rows will do.

For workplace or school use, follow the organization’s approved AI policy. An administrator may have selected a business, enterprise, education, healthcare, or API configuration with different training defaults and retention rules. A personal account should not be used as a workaround for an employer’s data restrictions.
Bottom line for each service
ChatGPT
Turn off Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone. Use Temporary Chat for sensitive prompts, remember its possible 30-day safety retention, and delete old chats separately.
Grok and X
Disable the Grok training option in X’s data-sharing menu or the Improve the Model control on Grok.com or mobile. Skip feedback, and make your X account private if public posts are the concern. Check regional limitations when using Grok without signing in.

If you are in a region covered by the documented European process, submit the available objection through the form, prompt, or Accounts Centre. Include linked accounts, act before training begins where possible, and understand that already incorporated material may not be removable.
The durable habit is simple: opt out separately, use private modes before sensitive prompts, avoid voluntary feedback on those prompts, and treat deletion as a separate task.
