To stop advertising texts in Google Messages, first decide whether you want to stop only a business’s promotions or all messages from that sender. Use Unsubscribe for eligible business promotions; use Block to stop all messages, and report the conversation if you suspect spam. The Unsubscribe option is not available for every sender or region.
1. Unsubscribe from an eligible business promotion
If the sender is a business and you want its non-essential promotions to stop, use Google Messages’ Unsubscribe control:
- Open the business conversation in Google Messages.
- Open the conversation menu and tap Unsubscribe.
- Choose a reason if prompted, then confirm.
Google Messages Help says the app sends a “STOP” message from your phone number to the business. Google notes that unsubscribe keywords can vary in some countries and that the business is responsible for honoring the request. The business may send an unsubscribe confirmation, and essential messages you requested—such as one-time passwords or boarding passes—may still arrive. Google’s instructions for unsubscribing from business senders explain these limits.

2. Check whether Unsubscribe is available
Unsubscribe is a supported option for certain business messages, not a universal control for every advertising text. Google lists it for RCS for Business in the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. For SMS/MMS, Google lists US short-code and alphanumeric senders. Availability depends on the sender type and country, so the option may not appear in your conversation. Google’s eligibility details provide the current supported list.

Google Messages moves blocked conversations to Spam & blocked. To review a conversation or unblock its sender, open the app menu and go to Spam & blocked. Google’s Android instructions for blocking and unblocking senders cover the steps.

4. Report a conversation if you suspect spam
Reporting is appropriate when a message seems like spam, rather than merely a promotion you no longer want. Use the conversation menu or the block-and-report flow in Google Messages and choose the spam-report option. Reporting also blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. You can block without reporting if you do not want to send a report.
There is a data-sharing trade-off: Google says a spam report sends the sender’s number and recent messages to Google. If you separately report the message to your carrier, the number and most recent text may be sent to the carrier. See Google’s explanation of spam reports in Messages before reporting.

5. Treat business verification and unwanted messages separately
A verified RCS business profile means the identity was checked by Google, a carrier, or a third-party provider. It does not mean you opted into that business’s promotions or want to receive them. Google says businesses must have explicit consent to send RCS messages. For an unwanted but otherwise legitimate business promotion, unsubscribe if the control is available; block or report when you want all messages stopped or suspect spam. Google describes RCS chats with businesses and how business RCS consent and verification work.

Blocking and reporting do not necessarily delete a conversation from your inbox view; check Spam & blocked. Google also says it cannot automatically remove a specific message or conversation from encrypted services. You can still block the sender or delete the conversation from your device. See Google’s content-reporting guidance for Messages.
