You can start playing tennis as an adult with no experience and very little equipment. Find a beginner-friendly lesson, clinic, or try-it event; ask whether it supplies a racket and balls; and arrive in comfortable clothes and court shoes. Learn the basics with an instructor, then continue with practice or social play.
What do you need to start?
You do not need to own a full kit or know the rules before your first class. USTA Florida says comfortable clothes and court shoes may be enough for some beginner clinics and try-it events, which lend rackets and balls. Ask the provider what it supplies before you buy anything. See USTA Florida’s adult getting-started guidance and frequently asked questions.
- Clothes: Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely.
- Shoes: Choose court or tennis shoes, and check the facility’s surface and footwear rules.
- Water: Bring water for the session.
- Racket and balls: Check whether these are provided. If you want your own racket, a basic adult tennis racket is a reasonable starting category; the cited guidance does not establish a best brand, model, weight, string setup, or grip size.
A can of balls is not essential before your first lesson. Instructors may use different ball types depending on the class and court setup, so ask what to bring.

The ball can be matched to the court and learning format. USTA Florida describes red balls as slower and lower-bouncing than orange balls, for 36-foot courts; orange balls as slower and lower-bouncing than green balls, for 60-foot courts; green-dot balls as slightly reduced-bounce balls for beginners on full-sized courts; and standard yellow balls for full-sized 78-foot courts. How do you find a beginner lesson?
Look for a class or clinic explicitly described as suitable for adult beginners, first-time players, or returning players. A group class can provide instruction alongside people at a similar stage. USTA Midwest describes introductory adult instruction covering grip, stance, forehand, backhand, serve, court positioning, and scoring, and lists adult program options on its adult tennis page.
To search locally, start with a USTA section, parks department, recreation center, or tennis facility. USTA’s adult tennis page links to local court and coach searches. USTA Florida also points players to a places-to-play directory and advises checking with facilities for their current schedules. Offerings, fees, court access, and availability depend on location, so confirm details directly with the provider.

Program formats differ. For example, USTA Alabama describes Ready Set Tennis as a four-hour instructional program for beginners and returning players; its Level 1 Ready to Learn registration includes four or more hours with an instructor and an adult racket. - Does it welcome complete beginners or returning players?
- What skills and activities does it cover, and how much instructor contact does it include?
- Are rackets and balls supplied, and what shoes are allowed?
- What are the schedule, location, total fee, and court-access arrangements?
- Is there a next step, such as another clinic or social play?
These questions help you compare programs on their stated features; the available program descriptions do not establish that one class format produces better results than another.
What happens in a first lesson?
Expect guided practice with the fundamentals rather than a requirement to arrive knowing how to play. Introductory instruction may cover how to hold the racket, stance, basic forehand and backhand strokes, serving, court positioning, and scoring. Ask the instructor to explain anything unfamiliar as you go.

What should you do after the first class?
Keep playing in whatever format feels manageable: repeat the clinic, practice with a friend, or join a social tennis program. Repetition gives you a chance to build on the skills introduced in class before deciding whether organized competition interests you.
