To buy listed Indian shares directly, you generally need a bank account for money, a trading account with a SEBI-registered stockbroker to place orders, and a demat account with a registered depository participant (DP) to hold shares electronically. Complete KYC, check the provider’s registration and charges, read the account terms, and understand investment risks before funding an account or choosing a stock.

What a demat account does—and what it does not do

The three accounts have different jobs. The bank account handles money paid into or received from your investment activity. The trading account is the route for placing buy and sell orders through a broker. The demat account holds securities, such as shares, in electronic form. A demat account does not itself select shares or place orders.

India has two depositories, NSDL and CDSL. Investors access their depository services through DPs. SEBI explains the roles of depositories and DPs in its investor education materials.

Choose a broker and depository participant

Before applying, verify the intermediary rather than relying only on a familiar brand name or a recommendation on social media. NSE advises investors to find a SEBI-registered member and check the exchange where that broker is registered. A broker executes securities transactions for clients; the DP provides access to depository services.

Compare providers on the terms that affect your use of the account:

  • SEBI registration and relevant exchange membership.
  • The full schedule of account, transaction, and service charges.
  • The KYC and account-opening process, including how identity checks are completed.
  • Platform and support features you actually need.
  • Terms for authorizations, account statements, and grievance handling.

These are comparison criteria, not a ranking of providers. Registration, fees, and service terms can change, so confirm them with the relevant official source and the provider before opening an account. NSE’s investor guidance is available at NSE Investor Services.

Complete KYC and account paperwork

The selected broker and DP will explain the documents and identity-verification steps required for your application. SEBI’s FAQ says a stockbroker performs the initial client KYC and uploads the details to the KYC Registration Agency (KRA) system. The precise process depends on the intermediary; do not assume every application follows the same digital steps or has the same activation time.

  1. Apply through the verified intermediary and provide the requested KYC information.
  2. Review the account forms and agreements before signing. Ask the provider to explain any term or authorization you do not understand.
  3. Request and retain copies of the signed documents and account details.
  4. Check the provider’s instructions for linking your bank account and accessing statements and trade records.

NSE’s guidance recommends completing KYC and agreement forms and keeping copies. SEBI’s FAQ, published in September 2024, explains investor accounts and KYC at SEBI Investor.

Understand charges before adding money

SEBI’s Investor Charter states that there is no charge payable for opening a demat account and that no minimum balance is required in one. That does not mean every service or trade is free. Brokerage and other account-related, transaction, or service fees may apply under the provider’s current tariff.

Read the tariff and account terms before funding the account. Check which charges apply to the services you intend to use and how they are calculated; do not infer the total cost from an account-opening offer alone. SEBI’s charter and investor guidance are published at SEBI Investor.

Prepare before placing your first order

Once the account is active, learn how the broker’s platform displays orders, holdings, and transaction records before committing money. Decide what you are investing for and how much risk you can accept; account access does not make a particular share suitable for you. SEBI notes that securities have different features and risk characteristics, and advises investors to understand them and make decisions in light of their objectives and risk appetite.

Protect the account and monitor it

Account security is part of investing, not an optional setup detail. Keep the following safeguards in place:

  • Read documents before signing; never sign blank forms or delivery slips.
  • Keep copies of agreements, account records, and transaction confirmations, and review demat statements.
  • Protect passwords and other authentication details. Do not share them with anyone claiming to offer investment help.
  • Understand the scope of any power of attorney or other authorization before granting it.
  • Consider whether to make a nomination, and follow the provider’s current process.
  • Avoid unregistered intermediaries and anyone promising guaranteed returns.
