You can invest in an Indian stock-market index mutual fund by completing KYC, choosing a fund and plan that track an index suited to your goal, then investing through the fund house (AMC) or an AMFI-registered distributor. A demat or trading account is not automatically required for this direct mutual-fund route. Before investing, check the scheme’s current documents, costs and tracking information: an index fund aims to follow its benchmark, not guarantee gains or outperform it.

What an index mutual fund does

An index mutual fund invests in stocks to mirror a named benchmark index, such as the Nifty 50. It holds all or most of the index’s constituents in proportions intended to track that benchmark. Because it follows an index rather than selecting stocks to beat it, it is passively managed. Its return can differ from the index because of expenses and tracking error, among other operational factors. Diversification across companies can reduce reliance on any one company, but it does not eliminate market risk or assure a profit. SEBI’s guide to indices explains these concepts.

The index name matters: “index fund” does not mean a fund represents every listed Indian company. A broad-market index and a sectoral or thematic index provide different exposures. A narrower index concentrates investments in a particular industry or theme, so check the benchmark’s constituents and scope rather than choosing by the fund’s label alone.

How to start investing

  1. Decide what market exposure you want. Identify the index the fund tracks and consider whether its breadth and concentration fit your purpose. The Nifty 50 is one example of an index, not a default recommendation for every investor.
  2. Complete KYC. KYC is a prerequisite to investing in mutual funds. Follow the current instructions of the AMC or intermediary you choose. AMFI’s investment guide describes the requirement and available channels.
  3. Choose how to invest. You can invest directly through an AMC’s online channel, without routing the purchase through a distributor, or use an AMFI-registered mutual-fund distributor. AMFI also describes conventional application channels; check the chosen provider’s current process.
  4. Compare the specific scheme and plan. Read the latest scheme information document and key information. Verify the benchmark, expense ratio, and published tracking information for the scheme and plan you are considering. These figures can change, so use current documents rather than old rankings or fee figures.
  5. Place the investment and retain the records. Follow the AMC’s or registered distributor’s current instructions for a lump-sum investment or a systematic investment plan (SIP). Check the scheme’s current minimum and transaction requirements before submitting the investment.

How to compare index funds

Compare funds on the same practical criteria, using current scheme documents. No single criterion establishes which fund is best for every investor.

What to compare What to check Why it matters
Index exposure The named benchmark, its constituents and how broad or concentrated it is. Funds with different benchmarks do not provide the same exposure, even if both are called index funds.
Expense ratio The current expense ratio for the specific scheme and plan. Costs reduce the fund’s return relative to the index.
Tracking information The scheme’s published tracking error or tracking difference, where available. These show how closely the fund has followed its benchmark; actual results can diverge.
Plan and route Whether you are buying a direct or regular plan and whether you want intermediary support. The plans differ in distribution arrangements and costs.

Tracking error describes variability in the difference between a fund’s returns and its benchmark; tracking difference is the amount of that gap over a stated period. Read the scheme’s explanation and measurement period when comparing published values. SEBI’s index guide notes that expenses and operational factors can contribute to divergence. There is no current scheme-level comparison here that supports naming a best fund or quoting a current fee or ranking.

Direct versus regular plans

A direct plan is bought from the AMC without an intermediary. A regular plan involves an intermediary, such as a distributor. Direct plans have lower costs because distributor commissions are not included in the same way; regular plans include intermediary support and have higher costs. Compare the current expense ratio and plan documents for the particular scheme rather than relying on an illustrative example. SEBI’s guide to direct mutual funds explains the distinction.

Do you need a demat account or broker?

Not necessarily. A demat account, trading account with a registered broker, and bank account are part of SEBI’s described route for investing in securities through the market. SEBI’s securities-market starter guide covers those accounts. Mutual-fund investors can instead use the direct AMC or distributor channels described by AMFI; a trading account is not a universal prerequisite for that route. Mutual-fund units may be held in demat form where applicable, but that is distinct from investing directly through an AMC.
