Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps so you can check whether one may be behind a Galaxy phone’s freezing, crashing, lag, or other trouble. To enter it, either long-press Power off in the Power menu and choose Safe mode, or power on the phone and hold Volume down when the Samsung logo appears. Restart the phone to return to normal mode.
What Safe mode does on a Samsung phone
Samsung says that in Safe mode, the device does not run third-party apps. Core software remains available, giving you a way to check whether a downloaded app may be involved in a problem. It is a diagnostic test, not a guarantee that the cause will be identified.
Downloaded apps can be associated with issues such as freezing, crashing, lag, camera trouble, audio problems, and connectivity problems. The test is most useful when you compare the same behavior in normal operation and Safe mode.
How to start a Samsung phone in Safe mode
Samsung documents two entry methods. Choose the Power menu method if you can use the phone’s interface; use the powered-off startup method if you prefer to follow the button sequence.

Use the Power menu
- Open the Power menu. Depending on your Galaxy model and software, hold Side and Volume down, or open Quick settings and tap the Power icon.
- Touch and hold the on-screen Power off icon until the Safe mode option appears.
- Tap Safe mode. The phone restarts, and the words “Safe mode” should appear at the lower left of the screen.
Start from a powered-off phone
- Turn the phone completely off.
- Turn it on. When the Samsung logo appears, press and hold Volume down.
- Release the button when the phone finishes starting. “Safe mode” should appear at the lower left.
If the label does not appear, Samsung advises repeating the steps. Screens, labels, and button arrangements can differ by device model, software version, and wireless provider. If these steps do not match your phone, use Samsung’s instructions for your exact Galaxy model and region: Samsung Support: Power on your Galaxy phone or tablet in Safe mode or Samsung UK: Safe mode instructions.
How to test whether a downloaded app is causing the problem
Once Safe mode is active, use the phone as you normally would enough to check whether the original symptom occurs again. If it stops, a downloaded app is a likely cause, but the result does not identify which app by itself.

- Think about apps you installed or updated shortly before the trouble began; start with those candidates.
- Restart into normal mode and remove one candidate app.
- Check whether the original symptom returns during normal use.
- If it persists, remove another candidate and check again. Continue one at a time until the symptom stops or you have ruled out the candidates you can reasonably test.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends removing apps one by one and checking the device after each removal. What it means if the problem continues in Safe mode
If the same issue continues while third-party apps are disabled, a downloaded app is less likely to be responsible. That observation alone does not prove the phone has a hardware fault, and it is not a reason to jump straight to a factory reset.

Follow Samsung’s guidance for the specific symptom. For a persistent problem that may be hardware-related, Samsung recommends contacting a service center or scheduling a repair. Its recommendations depend on the issue; Safe mode by itself cannot establish the cause. See Samsung’s boot-loop troubleshooting page for its relevant escalation guidance.
How to turn off Safe mode
The usual way to exit is to restart the phone or tablet; it should reboot normally. Samsung also documents tapping Turn off from the Safe mode notification when that option is available. If needed, power the device off, wait until it has fully shut down, and turn it on again.

Samsung notes that some customizations, such as wallpapers and themes, may return to their defaults after exiting Safe mode. If you use a security feature, you may also need to enter your credentials after reboot. See Samsung’s unexpected-shutdown guidance for related restart details.

Samsung cautions that available screens and settings vary by provider, software version, and model. The Power menu may open differently, and exact labels or button behavior may not match every device. Use the support page for your specific model and region rather than assuming one button combination works across all Galaxy phones and tablets.
