Algol, the Demon Star, is an easy naked-eye autumn target in Perseus; the Witch Head Nebula is a much fainter challenge best attempted with a large-aperture telescope under dark skies. NASA’s October 2026 observing guide places Algol in the northeastern sky after 9 p.m. and the nebula between Eridanus and Orion. Those directions are seasonal guidance, not a universal schedule: visibility and timing depend on your location and date.
Start with Algol, the naked-eye Demon Star
Algol, also called “The Ghoul,” is in the constellation Perseus. NASA’s autumn guide says to look toward the northeast after 9 p.m. This is a seasonal pointer rather than a precise rise time for every observer; check a current sky calendar for your location and observing date.
You do not need equipment to find Algol. To notice its changing brightness, compare it with nearby Almach. Binoculars or a small telescope can help with the comparison, but they are optional. NASA’s October 2026 Night Sky Notes recommends that approach.

The Witch Head Nebula, also designated IC 2118, is a reflection nebula. Unlike a star, it does not produce its own visible glow: dust scatters or reflects light from nearby stars. NASA identifies Rigel as the star illuminating it; the nebula’s spooky likeness is an appearance-based nickname, while IC 2118 is its astronomical designation.
#1 Best Overall
- EASY-TO-USE ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS FOR BEGINNERS: Cometron 7x50 binoculars are an easy, affordable way to learn the night sky and get started with astronomy.
- 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
- 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
- GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
- TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.
NASA’s October 2026 seasonal guide places it between Eridanus and Orion and gives its distance as about 900 light-years. A separate NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day description says the nebula is about 50 light-years across; it also describes its gas and dust as pointing toward Rigel and being partly eroded by it. The distance and size are different measurements, from different NASA sources.
As Kat Troche of the NASA Night Sky Network explained in October 2026: “Because reflection nebulae rely on nearby starlight to appear visible, they can be difficult to see with the naked eye, especially if they are as far away as this one.” NASA says the Witch Head is not visible to the naked eye and suggests a very large-aperture telescope at low magnification under dark skies.

- POWERFUL 15X MAGNIFICATION: Giant astronomy binoculars with massive 70mm objective lenses and 20x power. Pair them with any tripod for long-distance land-based viewing or astronomical observation.
- WORKS WITH YOUR TRIPOD: Due to their size & weight, most users mount SkyMaster binoculars on a traditional photo tripod (not included). The built-in ¼”-20 adapter attaches to most tripods in seconds.
- BRIGHT, SHARP VIEWS WITH BaK-4 PRISMS: The SkyMaster is a favorite among those who view in dim conditions near dawn and dusk or at night for astronomy. BaK-4 prisms maximize light throughput to your eye so you see brighter, more detailed images.
- DURABLE AND WATER-RESISTANT: A rubber-armored housing protects your binoculars from damage and provides a secure gripping surface. The water-resistant exterior stands up to tough conditions and unexpected rainy weather.
- UNBEATABLE WARRANTY & CUSTOMER SUPPORT: Buy with confidence from Celestron, a leading optics brand in California since 1960. Your purchase includes a Celestron Limited Lifetime US Warranty & US-based expert tech support.
Choose observing gear for the target
| Target | Unaided visibility | Useful approach | Conditions and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Algol | Visible to the naked eye | Compare its brightness with Almach; binoculars or a small telescope are optional. | More accessible and portable; follow seasonal directions and check timing for your location. |
| Witch Head Nebula (IC 2118) | Difficult to see visually; NASA says it cannot be seen with the naked eye. | Very large-aperture telescope at low magnification. | Dark skies matter greatly. NASA does not establish that a small beginner telescope will reveal it reliably. |
Astrophotography and visual observing are different challenges: a photograph’s result depends on imaging equipment and sky quality, so a nebula captured in an image is not proof that it will look similarly apparent through an eyepiece. The seasonal guide gives broad equipment classes and conditions, not tested model rankings or product recommendations.

Plan an autumn observing session
- Check the date and location. Use a current observing calendar or sky app to confirm when Perseus and the northeast-facing Algol view are suitable from where you are. The guide’s “after 9 p.m.” timing is seasonal, not universal.
- Find Algol first. Begin with the naked eye, then use Almach as a brightness comparison. Add binoculars or a small telescope only if they make the comparison easier.
- Treat Witch Head as a separate, demanding target. Look between Eridanus and Orion, choose a dark-sky site, and use a very large-aperture telescope at low magnification if attempting visual observation.
- Set expectations according to the method. Visual observing depends on aperture, magnification and sky darkness; an astrophotography attempt depends on imaging gear and sky quality. Neither target calls for the same setup.
