Before buying Pokémon merchandise online, check who is selling it, inspect photos of the actual item, compare the product and packaging with official images, and review the price and return protections. No single clue proves an item is counterfeit. Pokémon’s clearest specific advice concerns trading cards and booster packs; those checks should not be treated as authentication tests for plush toys, figures, clothing, or other merchandise.
Check the listing before you buy
Use several signals together. A polished listing or high star rating cannot establish authenticity, and photos may not show what is inside a sealed product.
Identify the seller and the terms
- Find out which business is actually selling and fulfilling the order. Read its contact information, seller history, shipping costs, return policy, refund process, and the marketplace’s dispute rules.
- Check the deadline for requesting a refund or disputing a payment before you buy. Ask the seller questions in writing and retain the replies.
- Do not use star ratings as authentication. The FTC warns that online reviews and ratings can be fake or misleading; weigh them alongside the seller’s identity, listing details, photos, and buyer protections. FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace
Look for useful photos and compare packaging
Prefer photos of the actual item and its packaging, with enough detail to assess what is being offered. A generic stock image—or no useful image of the item—leaves you with less evidence about its condition and whether the seller has it. Compare the product and packaging with official Pokémon product images; Pokémon Support recommends becoming familiar with how genuine decks and products look. Photos are still not proof of what is inside a sealed pack.
Treat an unusually low price as a warning
Pokémon Support says fake booster packs can be difficult to distinguish from genuine ones and warns that a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail is a near-certain warning sign that it may be counterfeit. The price alone does not prove that a listing is fake. The FTC likewise identifies expensive brand-name bargains as a possible counterfeit or stolen-goods warning. Consider the price together with the seller, photos, description, and return terms. Pokémon Support: Did I purchase fake or counterfeit cards? FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace

Read the wording carefully
Be cautious if a listing describes Pokémon TCG items as “replica” or “metal cards.” In a September 19, 2023 notice, the official Japanese Pokémon Card Game site described unauthorized products using Pokémon TCG works and trademarks being sold under labels including those terms. That notice addresses unauthorized use of protected TCG works and marks; it does not establish that every item using either phrase, in every context, is counterfeit. Use a seller or channel you can verify
The USPTO’s general guidance is to buy directly from brand owners or authorized retailers. Pokémon Center Support’s U.S.-site guidance, updated June 24, 2026, identifies Pokémon Center, Pokémon Automated Retail Vending Machines, and limited-time deals with major retailers such as Target and GameStop as channels for licensed merchandise. It says Pokémon TCG cards are an exception to its statement that it does not currently offer licensing or wholesale pricing to smaller retailers, because the cards are distributed through existing mass-market retailer partnerships. These statements describe Pokémon’s stated channels; they do not authenticate an individual marketplace seller or listing, and deals and policies can change. Choose a payment method with recourse
Use a credit card or a secure payment system that offers buyer protections, and check the relevant terms and deadlines before paying. Avoid methods the FTC identifies as unsafe for marketplace purchases, including gift cards, cash reload cards, and cryptocurrency. Keep the listing, order confirmation, payment record, and seller messages in case you need to report a problem. FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace
If a Pokémon card arrives and you are unsure
Try Pokémon Support’s light check, with limits
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often visible through bright light and suggests holding a card up to a bright light as one way to identify a fake. It also recommends asking a local shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card. Neither step is presented as infallible, and a check of a loose card does not authenticate a sealed booster pack. Avoid destructive tests or treating one visual clue as a conclusive verdict. Do not rely on one card test
TCGplayer’s specialist guide cautions that no trick, test, or method is 100% conclusive. Some checks also depend on having useful views of the card; for example, an online buyer cannot examine a card back that the listing does not show. Treat specialist advice as a way to investigate, not a guarantee of authenticity. TCGplayer: How to Spot Fake Pokémon Cards
