To check whether a GTA 6 image or clip is real, start with its source—not how convincing it looks. Compare it with Rockstar’s official media, trace the earliest post you can find, reverse-search the image, and look for reliable reporting that explains its provenance. Then label the result accurately: officially published, reported or credibly sourced, or unverified. A polished image is not proof, and a strange-looking detail is not proof of a fake.
What counts as official GTA 6 material?
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page identifies Vice City and the state of Leonida and links to the company’s official videos, screenshots, and artwork. Its screenshot library listed 99 screenshots when checked on October 3, 2026. The collection can change, so treat that number as a dated snapshot, not a permanent total.
If an image appears in Rockstar’s own published media, it is official material. If it does not appear in the collection you checked, the narrow conclusion is that you did not find it there; that alone does not prove it is fake. A post calling an image “official” is not itself an official source.

- Find the original post. Open the earliest post you can locate, rather than relying on a repost or screenshot of a post. Note the account, date and time, caption, links, and claimed source. If the post is anonymous or only repeats someone else’s claim, its provenance remains unestablished.
- Compare it with Rockstar’s channels. Check the official GTA VI page and screenshot library. Rockstar identifies its media section as the place to download official videos and screenshots. A match establishes that the asset was published there; no match only tells you it was not in the collection you checked. Rockstar Games
- Reverse-search the image. Save or copy the image and use a reverse image search to find other places it appears. Compare the earliest results, dates, and context; a search result may lead to an old image, a crop, or a different claim. MediaSmarts recommends reverse-searching suspicious images as one way to investigate them. MediaSmarts’ “Spotting Deepfakes” tip sheet
- Trace credits and links backward. Follow links in articles and inspect image credits, working back toward the originating post or source. MediaSmarts advises following credits as far back as possible. If each account points to another repost, you still do not have a verified origin. MediaSmarts
- Look for independent verification. Search for reputable reporting or fact-checks that identify where the image came from or explain how it was checked. A fact-checker may not investigate every altered or synthetic image, so finding no fact-check is not evidence that a post is authentic. MediaSmarts
- Use visual details as clues, not a verdict. Compare the HUD, text, camera movement, and other visible details with official material. An oddity can justify further checking, but an image may be cropped, compressed, edited, taken from a video, or captured from a development build. High visual quality does not authenticate it either.
- Choose a label that matches the evidence. Use “officially published” for material released through Rockstar’s channels, “reported or credibly sourced” when reliable reporting supports the provenance, and “unverified” when the trail does not establish where it came from. Say when and where you checked: the status of a circulating claim can change.
Compare competing claims about the same image
When two posts say an image or clip is the same leak, compare the evidence behind the claims rather than the confidence of the posters.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
- Earliest traceable publication: Which post can be traced furthest back, and does it identify a source?
- Official publication: Does the asset appear on Rockstar’s channels?
- Independent sourcing: Do reputable outlets explain how they verified the image or who supplied it?
- Asset context: Is it a crop, a repost, an altered still, or a frame from a video?
- Claim wording: Is it presented as official, supported by reporting, or merely speculation?
Views, production quality, watermarks, or an account’s certainty do not settle authenticity. A watermark shows that a mark is present; it does not establish who made the clip or what game it depicts.
What the August 2026 leak reports establish—and what they do not
Axios reported on August 21, 2026, that purported clips and a map were circulating. The report described skepticism about whether some footage might be polished GTA V material and said Rockstar had not officially confirmed the footage at that time. That is a time-qualified report, not confirmation from Rockstar; check for a newer official statement before treating the status as current. Axios, August 21, 2026

GamesRadar reported on August 20, 2026, that fake clips were circulating amid that leak wave. It pointed to odd camera movements and spelling as possible warning signs, while noting that high-fidelity clips could fool viewers. Those observations are reasons to investigate further, not a dependable visual test. GamesRadar, August 20, 2026

Visual inspection is useful for spotting inconsistencies, but both false positives and false confidence are possible. A suspicious detail can come from editing, compression, a crop, video capture, or development footage. Conversely, a convincing image can be fabricated or taken from another source. Reverse search, official-media comparison, and source tracing each answer different questions; none guarantees an authenticity verdict on its own.

Research on screenshot misinformation should not be mistaken for a GTA 6 authentication score. The 2021 VizFake paper, “Identifying Misinformation from Website Screenshots,” reported roughly an 85% F1 score on a dataset of 50,000 screenshots of news articles from more than 500 domains, using 5% of ground-truth labels. That result concerns a specific research task and dataset—not reverse image search, consumer deepfake detectors, or identifying genuine GTA 6 leaks. VizFake paper
