Start with the source, not the pixels: check Rockstar’s official material, trace the video to its earliest available upload, and separate what the clip shows from what its uploader claims. Rockstar acknowledged on August 26, 2026, that GTA VI gameplay videos had leaked. That confirms a leak event—not that every clip now circulating is genuine, untouched, or accurately described.
Start with what Rockstar has actually released
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page is the best public baseline for the game’s released material and stated details. It presents Trailer 1, Trailer 2, and “An Extended Look,” along with official videos, screenshots, and other media. It identifies Jason and Lucia and places the story in Leonida, including Vice City. Compare a clip’s specific claims with those published facts.
If a video looks like an official trailer or gameplay reveal, check whether it appears on Rockstar’s page or a clearly authorized channel. A third-party upload can copy official-looking footage while adding an unsupported caption, voice-over, or claim. The official page also identifies PlayStation 5 and presents preorder information; those details provide context, not proof that a particular clip is authentic.

What Rockstar’s 2026 leak acknowledgment proves
On August 26, 2026, Rockstar said that “having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team.” The statement, reported by Tom’s Hardware, is strong evidence that gameplay videos leaked. It is not an item-by-item authentication of every repost, watermark, claimed map, mechanic, build, or account story.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
That distinction matters because earlier, on August 21, Axios reported that Rockstar had not then officially confirmed the purported circulating footage and described debate over whether clips were genuine or GTA V edits. The later acknowledgment updates the status of the general leak event; it does not retroactively verify every specific clip or interpretation.
A takedown notice or apparent watermark can be a clue that protected material or a particular account is involved. Neither alone proves that every frame is untouched, that the footage shows a final build, or that the accompanying explanation is true.
Use this workflow to assess a video
1. Trace the earliest source
Find the earliest known upload and determine whether the account claims firsthand access or is reposting someone else. Prefer the longest, least-edited version over a cropped screen recording. Look for a coherent explanation of how the uploader obtained the footage, and check whether Rockstar, Take-Two, or credible independent reporting has addressed that specific material.
If the trail ends at an anonymous repost, call the clip unverified. A large view count, confident caption, or “100% real” watermark is not provenance. A popular repost is not the same as an authenticated original.

2. Separate visible content from the claim
Write down exactly what the post says the video is: official gameplay, a leak, a beta, a full build, a map reveal, or proof of a particular mechanic. Note any claimed date, platform, character, location, or version. Then distinguish those assertions from what is plainly visible in the footage.
Check factual claims against Rockstar’s official material. A confirmed location or character that conflicts with published information is a stronger warning than a difference in graphics quality. A platform or release claim presented as a final-build fact can also be challenged against official details; visual resemblance cannot rescue a contradicted claim.
3. Compare like with like
When comparing a scene to a trailer, choose footage with a similar camera distance and lighting. Look at interface typography, minimap shape, button prompts, vehicle surfaces, animation timing, and camera response. Treat mismatches as leads to investigate, not as a verdict: development footage may use temporary interface elements or unfinished animation, and a skilled creator can imitate a game’s visual style.

Trailers are edited presentations. Exceptional polish does not prove footage is real, and roughness does not prove it is fake.

4. Check consistency across consecutive frames and audio
Slow the video and follow the same objects over time. Look for multiple independent inconsistencies, such as:
- Road markings, shadows, or reflections changing without an apparent cause.
- Car panels, wheels, or license plates reshaping between frames.
- Interface icons drifting, changing, or appearing inconsistently.
- Objects merging, changing shape, or appearing after being occluded.
- Text changing from frame to frame.
- Collisions where contact, momentum, or visible damage do not line up.
- Voices, sound effects, or ambient audio that do not fit what is on screen or that repeat unnaturally.
These are warning signs, not a foolproof AI test. Compression, motion blur, interpolation, upscaling, editing, dubbing, and ordinary game bugs can produce apparent anomalies. Do not label a clip AI-generated based on one warped frame.
5. Treat platform labels and credentials as one evidence layer
YouTube’s altered or synthetic content policy says creators must disclose realistic content that is meaningfully altered or generated with AI in specified circumstances, and YouTube may add labels. Its “Made with AI” label indicates meaningful alteration or synthetic generation. Whether a label appears depends on disclosure, platform handling, and available metadata; no label does not establish authenticity.
YouTube explains that some “Captured with a camera” disclosures rely on supported C2PA 2.1-or-higher technology and an unbroken provenance chain. The feature appears only when creators use the relevant technology, so missing credentials do not prove a clip is fake. Re-encoding, screen recording, or reposting can remove or interrupt useful metadata. Even an available credential or label does not guarantee that every caption about the video is true.

6. Search for earlier versions and surrounding context
Inspect what happens before and after the viral moment. A short clip might be a concept scene, a modded GTA V video, footage from another game, or a compilation that mixes genuine-looking material with fabricated interface elements or narration. Search distinctive frames for earlier uploads and read the original creator’s description; a repost may strip a concept disclosure. Failure to find an earlier version with reverse-image search is not proof that the clip is original.
7. Do not download anything to verify a clip
You can assess a video as media without running a supposed game build, “unlocker,” installer, or archive. Tom’s Guide reported that Kaspersky security researchers identified fake preorder pages and a purported beta download promoted as a leak, with the download installing malware. Do not enter payment or login details on a page reached from a leak post, or run an executable or password-protected archive to check footage. Use Rockstar’s official site for announcements and media.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a confidence label that matches the evidence
- Official: Published by Rockstar or a clearly authorized source.
- Credibly authenticated: Strong provenance, credible independent reporting, or direct rights-holder evidence supports the material, but Rockstar has not officially released it.
- Unverified: The footage may look plausible, but there is not enough evidence to authenticate its origin or claims.
- Demonstrably false or mislabeled: The creator identifies it as a concept, an earlier source shows it predates the claim, or clear evidence ties it to another game or a synthetic source.
If the evidence does not settle a clip’s origin, say what is missing—for example, an original upload, a traceable source, or independent corroboration—and leave it unverified. Do not turn “gameplay videos leaked” into “this video is genuine.”
