A big discount percentage does not prove a sale is a bargain. Check the product’s recent price history, compare the exact item’s final cost at other sellers, and find out what the crossed-out price represents before buying. Legal rules vary by location: for example, the European Union generally uses a trader’s lowest price in the previous 30 days for announced reductions, while the United States does not have that same general rule.
How can I tell if a sale is real?
Judge the amount you would actually pay against the product’s recent prices and comparable offers—not just the advertised percentage. A “50% off” claim can be technically based on a comparison figure that is not the seller’s recent selling price, or the discount may require a membership or other condition.
Use this quick check before you buy:
- Identify the exact product. Match the model number, size, colour, bundle contents, and included accessories. Similar-looking variants can have different prices.
- Check its price history. Look across a useful period, including the weeks before the sale event. Price-history websites and browser extensions can help, but their records may omit sellers, regions, or particular product variants.
- Compare current offers. Check other retailers and the manufacturer’s official site for the same item, bundle, and delivery terms.
- Work out the final payable cost. Include unavoidable delivery or service charges and any conditions you must meet to get the advertised price.
- Verify the reference price and urgency claims. Find out what a crossed-out figure means, and pause if a countdown restarts or a scarcity prompt cannot be independently checked.
For competing offers, compare the final price, product match, price history, reference-price meaning, mandatory fees, eligibility conditions, and credibility of any urgency claim. A lower headline price may not be the cheaper offer once those factors are accounted for.
How do I check if a price was inflated before a sale?
Look at the price pattern rather than one isolated “before” figure. If the price rose shortly before a promotion and then fell to around its earlier level, the headline discount may overstate the saving relative to the product’s recent market price. A price-history record is useful evidence of the pattern, but it may not cover every seller or exact variant.

Compare the listing’s current price with prices from other retailers and the brand’s own website. Make sure the comparison is like-for-like: an older model, a smaller pack, a different bundle, or delivery charged separately can make an apparent price comparison misleading.
Save a screenshot or note showing the seller, item, displayed price, offer terms, and date if you may need to question the claim later. This is a practical record-keeping step, not a guarantee of a refund or a legal requirement.

Is the crossed-out price genuine?
Ask what the figure is meant to represent. It could be the seller’s previous price, a manufacturer’s recommended retail price (RRP), or a competitor comparison. Those are not interchangeable: an RRP is not proof that the seller recently charged that amount, and a competitor comparison does not by itself show the seller’s own discount.

If the listing does not say what it is comparing, or gives no understandable basis for the figure, do not treat it as proof of a saving.

European Union
For price reductions covered by the EU Price Indication Directive, the reference price is generally the lowest price that the same trader applied during the 30 days before the reduction. For successive reductions, ECC-Net describes the reference as the price before the first reduction. The European Commission’s guidance also calls for comparison prices to be clearly identified and current. United Kingdom
Do not assume the EU’s 30-day reference-price rule applies in the UK. The cited UK guidance addresses clear, complete, accurate upfront total prices, including unavoidable charges, and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024’s unfair-commercial-practices provisions, which apply to relevant practices from 6 April 2025. Those provisions address misleading actions and omissions by their likely effect on consumer decisions. Consult the UK government’s price-transparency guidance and the CMA guidance on unfair commercial practices.

The cited US Federal Trade Commission FAQ concerns the Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees; it is not a general 30-day list-price rule. The FTC says dynamic pricing is allowed when pricing information is not misleading and explains how to present promotions that are unavailable to everyone, such as rewards-program offers. How can I compare Black Friday prices?
Use the same process as for any sale event; the event name and discount label do not establish that a price is unusually low. Begin checking before the event so you can see whether the advertised “was” price fits the product’s recent pricing pattern. Compare the exact model and bundle across retailers, then compare total payable prices after mandatory charges and any membership or subscription requirements.

Be cautious with countdown timers that reset when you refresh and “only a few left” messages that you cannot verify. The European Commission’s 2026 account of its 2025 sales sweep reported examples of misleading scarcity claims. Treat those prompts as a reason to pause and check the offer independently, rather than as a reason to buy immediately.
What do official checks say about sale practices?
The European Commission’s 2026 report on its 2025 sweep says 23 EU countries plus Iceland and Norway participated, and reports that 30% of 314 checked traders referenced discounts incorrectly. It also says 36% attempted to add optional items to baskets; among those, 40% did so without clearly requesting consent. Of traders displaying price comparisons, 34% of all checked traders, 60% did not clearly explain the source of the reference price. The Commission reported that 18% used pressure-selling techniques, with more than half of those cases misleading, and 10% used drip pricing. These are findings from a screening sweep, not estimates of every retailer or sale. The Commission stated: “Adding items without the consumer’s consent, displaying prices in a misleading way, falsely claiming a product is running out, or hiding extra fees until the end of the process are illegal practices under EU consumer law.” See the European Commission’s report on the sales sweep.
In a separate summary of the 2025 sweep, the Commission described 25 participating countries and its screening of 314 traders: 94% advertised discounts, at least 30% did not comply with EU price-reduction rules, another 30% of cases needed more information, and 40% fully complied. That summary’s country count and the report page’s participant description are reported as stated on their respective pages; they should not be silently treated as identical. What conditions can make a discount cost more?
Check the terms beside the price, not only the headline. A promotion may be limited to members, depend on a subscription, or require an action such as joining a rewards scheme. Cashback and discount offers can have conditions, and recurring payments may apply. ECC-Net advises consumers to read the terms attached to discounts or cashback and check for recurring debits.
Also check for unavoidable delivery or service charges before comparing offers. UK CMA guidance says these charges belong in the upfront total price. In the US, the FTC FAQ explains how to present prices for promotions that are not available to everyone. Different rules apply in different jurisdictions, so do not assume that one country’s specific pricing rule applies elsewhere.
