To spot crypto presale scams, verify the project and its promoters through independent, official channels; read exactly what the token gives you; and treat guaranteed returns as a warning sign. To protect your wallet, never share its seed phrase or private key, and do not sign a request you cannot understand. A convincing website or white paper is not proof that an offering is legitimate.
How to tell whether a crypto presale is legitimate
No checklist can guarantee that a presale is safe. Use these checks to identify warning signs before sending money or connecting a wallet.
- Verify the project’s official channels. Find its website and communications independently rather than following an unsolicited message or paid promotion. Check that the address you visit matches one confirmed through the project’s independently verified channels. The Singapore Police Force advises users to avoid unknown links and verify websites through official sources: Singapore Police Force guidance.
- Check the people and entities behind the offering. Identify the promoters and affiliated businesses, then verify their claims independently. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recommends due diligence on individuals and entities associated with an offering: CFTC advisory on digital coins and tokens.
- Read what the token actually does. Look for a clear explanation of the rights the token confers and its intended use. Consider how the project says it will use sale proceeds and whether the materials explain how, or whether, money can be recovered. Token rights and legal treatment depend on the offering’s facts and jurisdiction. Investor.gov cautions that an impressive-looking ICO can be easy to create and still be a scam: SEC Investor.gov alert on ICOs.
- Be skeptical of guaranteed returns. The CFTC states: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.” Treat promises of certain profits as a warning, not as evidence that a project is trustworthy.
- Stop if you are asked for wallet secrets or an unexplained signature. A project or support agent should not need your seed phrase, passphrase, or private key. Do not sign a wallet request you cannot explain, even if the page looks professional or a hardware wallet is involved.
Crypto presale red flags to watch for
- Pressure to act through a link in a message or promotion: an unfamiliar link can lead to a phishing site or a wallet prompt designed to steal credentials or authorize an unwanted action.
- Vague token rights or use of funds: if project materials do not clearly explain what the token is for, what rights it carries, or how proceeds will be used, you cannot assess those claims properly.
- Guaranteed investment returns: this conflicts with the CFTC’s warning that investments and trading strategies cannot be guaranteed.
- A request for your seed phrase, passphrase, or private key: disclosure can give someone control of your wallet. Never enter these details into a site or share them with a person claiming to provide support.
- A signature request you cannot interpret: “Connect wallet” is not the only meaningful interaction. A signature may authorize a later transaction, while an approval may let a smart contract spend tokens.
How a presale interaction can put your wallet at risk
Phishing links and fake support
A malicious link may take you to a page that imitates a project or wallet service. It may ask for wallet secrets or guide you through a transaction or signature. Verify addresses using the project’s official channels, and do not trust a support contact merely because it approached you first.

Some permit signatures are off-chain messages that authorize a later transaction. No immediate transfer does not mean the signature is harmless. A token approval can give a smart contract permission to spend tokens, potentially enabling asset movement later. Read the action shown by your wallet, be wary of unfamiliar contracts, and check approvals after a suspected interaction. Ethereum.org explains wallet safety and permissions in its security guidance.

What a hardware wallet can and cannot do
A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to online attacks, but it cannot make a malicious signature or approval safe. The Singapore Police Force also warns that some devices show limited transaction details, so carefully review each signing request rather than approving it by habit. Ethereum.org includes hardware wallets among its security measures. Your responsibility to check addresses and permissions remains whether you use a hardware or software wallet.
What to do after signing a suspicious crypto request
- Stop interacting with the suspected scammer. Do not follow more links, sign further requests, or send additional money.
- Check and revoke suspicious approvals. Use a trusted wallet interface or permission checker, or reach a blockchain explorer through a verified official source. Etherscan and Revoke.cash are examples named in official guidance; the European Banking Authority (EBA) recommends trusted permission checkers. Review the action before connecting a wallet or signing anything. See the EBA crypto-fraud factsheet and UK National Crime Agency Operation ATLANTIC guidance.
- If your seed phrase was exposed, move remaining assets. Create a new wallet with a seed phrase that has not been exposed, then transfer remaining assets promptly. Do not import the compromised phrase into another wallet and assume the assets are safe.
- Secure related accounts. Change reused passwords and secure associated accounts, especially any account used to access a crypto provider.
- Contact your provider and report the incident. Use a verified official channel for the exchange, wallet provider, or platform involved, and report to the relevant authority in your location. Recovery or reversal is not assured; completed blockchain transfers are often not reversible, though a provider may have options when an account or wallet is on its platform.
- Ignore paid recovery promises from strangers. Someone who claims they can retrieve stolen cryptocurrency in exchange for a fee may be running another scam.
Frequently asked questions before a crypto presale
Can a presale drain my wallet?
A presale site does not automatically gain control of a wallet just because you visit it. Risk arises if you disclose wallet secrets or approve or sign an action that gives an attacker access or spending authority. A token approval may enable later movement, so review permissions even when you saw no immediate transfer.

Does a polished website or white paper prove a presale is safe?
No. A polished presentation is easy to create; verify the promoters, token rights, and claims independently instead of treating presentation quality as proof.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I get stolen cryptocurrency back?
Do not assume so. Blockchain transfers are often not reversible, and no recovery is guaranteed. Contact the relevant provider and authorities through verified channels, and do not pay an unsolicited recovery service.
