Check the item itself, not just the seller’s story. Verify any certification number in the issuer’s official database, compare the listing with the record and item image, inspect graded holders for tampering, and look closely at signatures and construction. A certificate, hologram, or signing photo is only useful when it can be tied to the exact item you are buying.
Start with the item-specific record
Before paying, identify what kind of authentication the seller claims and where that claim can be checked. Enter certification numbers on the issuing organization’s official site, then compare the record with the item offered: card or object details, signature, label, hologram, and any database image. A valid number alone is not enough if it belongs to another item or the record does not match the listing.
- Open the official lookup yourself rather than relying only on a screenshot or link supplied by the seller.
- Compare every visible identifying detail with the database entry and photographs, when available.
- Ask for clear photographs of the actual item, its certification label or hologram, and relevant details if the listing does not show them.
How to inspect graded cards and slabs
PSA describes its card holder as tamper-evident, not tamper-proof. Its buyer guidance identifies possible signs of compromise, including cloudy frosting near the edges, cracks or fractures, unusual flexibility if the sonic weld has been broken, and edges that appear ready to pop open. These are warning signs rather than a complete test; a particular forgery may not show all of them.

An extra layer may make reverse-side text difficult to see under light, or part of the authentic label may be visible beneath it. How to check autographs and letters of authenticity
For PSA/DNA documentation, compare the certification number on the label and paperwork, then check PSA’s online record for an image of the exact item when one is available. PSA lists security features that include a tamper-evident label, a color-changing embedded hologram on its documentation, watermarks on letters of authenticity (LOAs), and an item image. PSA also describes examining ink, autograph structure, and the object; comparing the signature side by side with examples; and potentially using video spectral comparison. That is PSA’s description of its own process, not proof that a certificate from any issuer is genuine.
The FBI advises comparing a signature with known examples and considering the authenticator’s qualifications. A signature can vary naturally, so look at the overall form and details against credible examples rather than treating one difference as conclusive. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service warns that a photograph claimed to show an athlete signing an item may be stolen or stock imagery; the photo is not item-specific proof on its own.

Use the relevant official references: PSA’s FAQ, PSA’s authentication-method description, the FBI guidance, and the Postal Inspection Service guidance.

For jerseys, compare the stitching pattern, nameplate, and patches with photographs of known genuine examples. For an item called a limited edition, find the actual edition size; the phrase alone does not tell you how many were made.

For MLB items represented as signed or game-used under MLB’s authentication program, check the program hologram and enter its serial number in MLB’s database. MLB says designated authenticators witness eligible items being signed or used. Its licensed-product holograms are different from authentication holograms and do not appear in the game-used/autograph verification system. Start at MLB Authentication.
Assess the seller and the deal
Authentication clues do not replace basic seller checks. Research who is selling the item, read the refund policy, and compare prices for similar signed items. Be especially cautious when a valuable autograph is offered at an extreme discount. The FBI’s 2016 advisory, issued around the Cubs championship season, quotes Special Agent Brian Brusokas of its Art Crimes team: “Always be mindful that if an item seems too good to be true, it probably is.” The Postal Inspection Service also advises researching the seller.

- Confirm the seller’s identity and look for a clear, workable return policy.
- Compare the asking price with similar items rather than relying on an asserted discount.
- Do not treat a signing photo, certificate, or hologram as a substitute for a matching official record and item-specific details.
- Pause if the seller will not provide useful photographs or answer reasonable questions about provenance and authentication.
Choose an authentication route that fits the item
Authentication programs do not all establish the same thing. MLB’s program is based on an authenticator witnessing an eligible item being signed or used. PSA describes examining autographs after the fact through signature and object analysis and comparison. The FBI’s advice also points buyers to the authenticator’s qualifications. Compare the item types a service covers, what evidence it records, whether the specific item can be found in an official lookup, and whether the image or details match. These sources do not establish one service as best for every collectible.
If you still cannot resolve a discrepancy, or the purchase is valuable enough to justify extra diligence, consider a professional authentication service whose current scope covers that specific item. Check the provider’s process, fees, and what its result does and does not certify before relying on it.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The FBI advisory is from 2016, the Postal Inspection Service page was last updated May 2, 2019, and the PSA and MLB pages are undated in the versions referenced here. Service procedures and program scope can change, so check the current official pages before relying on a particular feature or lookup process. The official guidance does not establish a market-wide counterfeit rate, and a remote check cannot authenticate a particular collectible with certainty.
