The safest way to avoid a counterfeit Rhode, Rare Beauty, or SKIMS product is to check the seller against the brand’s current guidance for your country—or buy directly from the brand. A marketplace’s reputation, polished photos, or a bargain price cannot prove an item is genuine. If you cannot establish where it came from, do not buy it; for beauty products, do not use it.
Start by checking who is selling it
Before comparing packaging or photos, look up the brand’s own current list of official or authorized sellers for your country. Check the exact seller name and store—not just the marketplace hosting the listing. A brand may sell through a marketplace shop it verifies without authorizing every seller on that platform.
Rhode says it cannot guarantee the authenticity, quality, or condition of products bought outside its listed channels. Its FAQ identifies rhodeskin.com, verified Instagram Shop and TikTok Shop, Sephora in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom, and MECCA in Australia and New Zealand. These channels are based on Rhode’s FAQ as checked October 7, 2026; confirm the current Rhode FAQ for your location before purchasing, since availability can change.
For Rare Beauty and SKIMS, consult the brands’ own pages rather than relying on reseller claims or community posts. The available Rare Beauty Pro Artist terms refer to official or authorized channels but do not provide a general consumer retailer list. SKIMS’ terms do not provide an authorized-retailer list or counterfeit-detection guidance. Those gaps are not evidence that a particular seller is unauthorized; they mean you should verify through the brand’s current consumer-facing information.

Look for warning signs, not a single “tell”
The FBI lists unusually low prices, packaging differences or careless wrapping, unusual cosmetic consistency or texture, and non-authorized online sellers as possible counterfeit indicators. These are general warning signs, not Rhode-, Rare Beauty-, or SKIMS-specific authentication tests. One discrepancy does not prove an item is fake, and an item that looks convincing is not thereby verified. See the FBI’s guidance on counterfeit cosmetics and fragrances.
- Price: Compare the offer with the brand or an authorized retailer’s current price. An unusually low price deserves scrutiny, but price alone cannot establish authenticity.
- Seller: Check whether the seller—not merely the platform—is confirmed by the brand for your country.
- Photos: Be cautious with generic images, repeated stock photos, or pictures that do not show the actual item. For a resale listing, ask for original, detailed photos of the item, labels, tags, and packaging.
- Packaging and labeling: Compare visible details with official product information. Differences can be a warning sign, but packaging variation alone is not conclusive.
- Appearance or texture: For cosmetics, an unexpected consistency, texture, or appearance is a reason not to use the product while its origin is uncertain.
For resale listings, check the transaction as well as the item
Second-hand fashion can be harder to assess from a listing than a direct purchase. UK Intellectual Property Office guidance recommends looking for detailed original photos, assessing the seller’s responses, and using platform authentication or buyer protections where available. - Ask for clear, current photos of the specific item, including labels, tags, seams, closures, and packaging where relevant.
- Review the seller’s history and how directly they answer questions about the item’s source and condition.
- Before paying, check what the platform’s authentication covers, whether it applies to this brand and listing, and how disputes, returns, and refunds work.
- Keep the listing, seller messages, payment record, and any promised authenticity or return terms in case you need to report a problem.
Compare two listings using the same checks
When choosing between listings, compare them on the factors that affect both authenticity risk and your ability to resolve a problem:

When in doubt, walk away
If a seller cannot be verified, the listing leaves important details unclear, or a beauty product seems unusual, do not treat visual inspection as proof of authenticity. The FBI’s advice is direct: “If you’re not sure about the authenticity of a product, don’t buy it.” For a beauty product of uncertain origin, do not use it.
