Start by checking the exact release, not just the brand name. Match the claimed model, drop or season, colorway, size, collaboration, edition, and region to reliable references, then weigh the seller’s history, provenance, listing details, construction, labels, packaging, and any serial or edition data together. No single logo, tag, QR code, certificate, or marketplace badge proves an item is genuine.
How can you tell whether limited-edition streetwear is real?
Authenticity is specific to a release and variant. Two garments can share a brand logo yet differ in blank, print treatment, label details, materials, or production run. First write down exactly what the seller claims: product or model, drop or season, collaboration, colorway, size, edition or run, and release region.
Compare that claim with official brand material, archived release references, or reliable documentation for the same variant. A close-looking graphic is not enough if the garment’s construction or release details do not match. Gather independent evidence rather than trying to decide from one striking feature.

Look for purchase receipts or authorized retailer records when appropriate, but remember that documents can be forged or may relate to a different item.
- Listing consistency: compare the title, description, condition, size, edition claims, and photos. Contradictions or unusually vague details deserve follow-up.
- Physical details: compare material, seams, stitching, print or embroidery, placement, proportions, hardware, wash or distressing, and packaging against examples of the exact release.
- Labels and tags: inspect them in context, including how they relate to the garment and to other known examples. A complete-looking label is not an authenticity certificate.
Look for clusters of mismatches, not one imperfect detail. Wear, repairs, age, regional production, and manufacturing variation can change appearance; a worn seam is not automatically evidence of a counterfeit, while multiple release-specific contradictions are more concerning.

What evidence should you request before buying?
If photos do not show details clearly, ask the seller for well-lit, current images of the specific item. Request dated photos where reused listing images are a concern. Useful views include:
- Neck and care labels, swing tags, and their attachment points
- Stitching, seams, fabric, print or embroidery, and placement
- Hardware and, where relevant, soles
- Packaging, accessories, and any serial or edition details
- Purchase records or authorized retailer documentation, if available
Check that the new images agree with the existing listing and show the same item. A receipt alone cannot establish that the pictured item is the one originally purchased, and a seller’s refusal to provide a crucial view leaves a gap rather than proving the item is fake.
What do clothing labels establish?
In the United States, most textile and wool products have labeling requirements for fiber content, country of origin, and the manufacturer or responsible business identity, according to the Federal Trade Commission’s labeling guidance. Missing or inconsistent information can be a reason to investigate, but compliant-looking disclosures do not establish authenticity. Label rules and consumer protections differ by jurisdiction; US guidance is not a substitute for local law elsewhere.

Do marketplace authentication badges guarantee an item is genuine?
No badge should be treated as a universal guarantee. Services may depend on the exact listing, category, brand, condition, location, and current terms. Check the listing-level eligibility and what happens if an item cannot be verified before paying.
eBay
eBay says selected listings on eBay.com are eligible for Authenticity Guarantee, with eligibility indicated by the current listing badge. Its described physical inspection considers garment structure, materials, tags, logos, original packaging, and accessories. The service has geographic and category limits, and certain modified, signed, or sealed garments are excluded. Scope can change, so review the current eBay streetwear service information and terms for the specific listing.
For sellers, eBay’s counterfeit policy advises, “If authentication can’t be confirmed, don’t list.” Keep clear records supporting an authenticity claim and consult eBay’s counterfeit item policy before listing.

StockX describes different workflows for its Verified Marketplace and Listings Marketplace. Orders in the Verified Marketplace are either inspected by verification experts or sourced from qualifying verified sellers. In the Listings Marketplace, select sellers may offer a broader range of item types and conditions, and buyers can choose verification for select listings. These are platform-described processes, not proof that every item on the marketplace receives the same inspection. Check the order-level conditions and the current StockX verification process for the item you intend to buy.
How should you assess collectibles?
“Collectibles” covers distinct categories, so the useful evidence and appropriate experts vary. Do not apply a clothing-label check or one category’s legal marking rules to every collectible.
- Graded collectibles: check the grading company’s own certification record and confirm that the record matches the item.
- Autographs and signed merchandise: verify the issuer and the certificate standards accepted for that category.
- Limited-run toys or art editions: compare edition marks and provenance with records from the creator or publisher where available.
- US imitation political or numismatic items: the FTC’s overview of the Hobby Protection Act describes marking requirements for imitation political items and imitation numismatic items, including coins, tokens, paper money, and commemorative medals. This is a narrow US legal example, not a universal test or a rule for all collectibles.
When should you walk away or avoid listing?
Pause or walk away if key photographs are missing, provenance is weak, details conflict, or the seller pressures you to pay quickly. Check payment and return protections before buying, and do not move payment off-platform when doing so would remove those protections. If the stakes justify it, seek a brand or specialist authenticator with demonstrated experience in the exact category; compare what the service examines, who performs the check, geography, handling of uncertain results, returns, record availability, fees, and turnaround in current terms.

If you resell, preserve invoices, messages, photographs, accepted grading or authentication records, and serial or edition documentation. Do not present an item as genuine when you cannot support that claim.
How common are counterfeit purchases on UK resale platforms?
In a 2026 UK government release, the Intellectual Property Office reported that one in four UK buyers of pre-loved clothing had unknowingly bought a counterfeit online in the previous year. It also reported that 45% of UK 18–24-year-olds had encountered counterfeit designer items on resale platforms, compared with 23% of people aged 55–64. Nearly 60% of buyers of counterfeit pre-loved clothing reported poor quality, rapid deterioration, or refund disputes. These figures describe the UK findings and populations in that release; they are not global prevalence estimates. The release also reported that 63% of shoppers felt confident they could spot a fake, while one in three said they did not check authenticity before purchase. See the IPO release and its findings.
