If you find an account, inquiry, balance, or other entry you don’t recognize, check all three credit reports, document the entry, and investigate promptly. An unfamiliar item is not proof of identity theft, but a plausible unauthorized account deserves quick attention. For U.S. consumers, IdentityTheft.gov is the central starting point for reporting suspected identity theft and getting a recovery plan.
How do I know if there’s identity theft on my credit report?
Get your reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com. The FTC says reports are available there weekly for free. Checking all three matters because an item may appear on one report but not the others.
Review account names, opening dates, balances, inquiries, and other entries. Record which report contains each unfamiliar item, when you retrieved the report, and the details that identify it. Save a copy of the relevant report. An unfamiliar creditor name can sometimes be a legitimate account reported under a parent company or a different business name, and some entries may be reporting errors. Verify what you can, but treat a credible unauthorized account as urgent.
What should I do if I see an account I didn’t open?
Contact the company reporting or servicing the account and ask for its fraud department. Request that it close or freeze the account, stop further activity, explain what evidence it needs, and confirm the outcome in writing. A credit-report action alone does not close the creditor’s account.

How do I report suspected identity theft?
File a report at IdentityTheft.gov, or use the FTC identity-theft helpline listed on that site. Provide accurate details about what happened. The FTC uses the information to create an Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. Save or print both documents for follow-up; if you do not create an account on the site, save them before leaving the page.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
A local police report can be useful in some cases or requested by a business, but it is not universally required. IdentityTheft.gov advises bringing your FTC report, photo identification, proof of address, and other relevant evidence if you file locally. If the theft involves taxes, medical care, a child, a phone, utilities, or another specialized area, follow the relevant case-specific instructions linked from IdentityTheft.gov as well as the general credit-report steps.

For qualifying information that resulted from identity theft, ask for a block under section 605B of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The FTC sample letter says a bureau must block qualifying information within four business days after receiving the required materials. That statutory period does not mean every request will be accepted: incomplete or ineligible requests may not qualify. Follow the current official instructions and keep copies of what you send and any delivery confirmation.
If an item is inaccurate but you cannot establish that identity theft caused it, use the regular dispute process instead. The FTC explains that bureaus must investigate disputes and amend a report when the consumer is right. A block request and a regular dispute are related but distinct routes.

Should I put a fraud alert or freeze on my credit?
A fraud alert asks prospective creditors to take steps to verify your identity; a freeze restricts access to your credit report for new-credit applications. The protections work differently, and you can choose based on whether you want a verification warning, restricted report access, or both. Confirm the current setup process on the official bureau pages.
