You usually cannot tell whether an actor in a film or online video was generated by AI just by looking. Visual oddities can prompt a closer check, but there is no reliable, universal tell. Check the source, disclosures and available provenance records, then verify the video’s claims independently. A watermark or credential can help identify a file’s origin or editing history; it does not prove that the scene is true.

Why visual clues are not enough

People are not reliable AI detectors by sight alone. A 2024 study of 1,276 participants tested their ability to distinguish synthetic images, audio, video and audiovisual material from authentic examples. Participants struggled to meaningfully tell synthetic from authentic content, and performance was worse for synthetic material involving human faces and for examples presented through only one type of media. Prior knowledge did not meaningfully improve detection. The study abstract describes the results.

Unusual blinking, skin, teeth, hands, reflections, movement or lip-sync can be reasons to investigate, but none is established as a dependable standalone test. A convincing synthetic performance may not show an obvious flaw, while a real production can contain visual glitches caused by editing, compression or effects. Treat what you see as a clue, not a verdict.

How to check a video’s source and provenance

Start with the best available copy

Find the original post or downloadable file rather than relying on a repost, screen recording or heavily compressed clip. Note who published it, when it appeared and where it was said to have been filmed. Reposting and transcoding can remove metadata, so a copy without provenance information may simply have lost it.

Look for disclosures and Content Credentials

Check whether the platform or publisher labels the video as AI-generated or AI-edited. If the file has Content Credentials, inspect them for information about its source and editing history. The C2PA guidance describes signed manifests and machine-readable classifications that can indicate whether media is fully generated, AI-enhanced, device-captured or human-edited. Newer guidance also covers AI disclosures, edits localized to video segments, generation inputs and editing actions.

Credentials are useful when present, but they are not a truth certificate. They can describe a file’s recorded provenance without proving that the depicted event happened as presented, that the video is unedited in every relevant sense, or that its claims are correctly contextualized.

Use verifiers only for the signals they support

Verification tools are not universal AI detectors. OpenAI’s verifier checks supported OpenAI provenance signals; it does not establish whether a video from any provider was generated by AI. Google said on May 19, 2026, that SynthID verification for image, video and audio was available in the Gemini app, with other verification features rolling out. These examples show provider-specific coverage, not a cross-platform test.

Google also reported that SynthID verification had been used 50 million times globally in Gemini as of that announcement. The company said it had watermarked over 100 billion images and videos and 60,000 years of audio. These are figures reported by Google, not independently audited measurements. Interpret either result narrowly: a detected signal connects the file to a supported provider or process, but does not prove who made it, why it was made, who owns it or whether its content is accurate. A result that finds no signal means only that the verifier did not find a signal it supports. It may reflect unsupported products or file types, media created before a signal was available, or metadata stripped during editing or sharing.

What to verify beyond the file

Provenance checks can help answer how a file was created or changed. They cannot settle whether the scene or accompanying claim is true. For that, check the publisher and date, compare the location with credible reporting, look for other camera angles, and see whether reliable sources identify the actor or production. These are ordinary verification steps, not a guaranteed AI-detection method.

What “AI-generated actor” can mean in film

The phrase can describe different things: a wholly synthetic character, a digital replica modeled on a real performer, or a character whose voice or appearance has been altered with AI. Those distinctions matter for consent and contractual rules, even when they are not visually apparent to an audience.

In its TV/Theatrical agreement guidance, SAG-AFTRA distinguishes a synthetic performer—wholly synthetic and not based on an actual performer—from a digital replica that resembles an actual performer. The guidance also says a live performer voicing a character affects its classification, and describes notice, bargaining and consent requirements for productions covered by that agreement. These terms apply in that union agreement context, not automatically to every production, performer, country or online video. See SAG-AFTRA’s TV/Theatrical AI guidance.

Consent and rights questions are separate from whether viewers can spot a simulation. In a March 20, 2026 statement about Val Kilmer’s reported AI digital replica in the motion picture As Deep as the Grave, SAG-AFTRA said the applicable agreement and state law required estate consent. That was the union’s statement about that specific situation, not a universal summary of postmortem publicity law. The union stated: “Any use of digital replicas must be transparent, properly authorized and fully aligned with the rights of performers and their estates.” Read the statement.
