A genuine deal is one that gives you the exact item you want for a lower real cost—not merely one advertised with a large discount. Check the model and condition, compare current prices at multiple sellers, include delivery and unavoidable fees, and review the offer terms before paying.
Match the exact product before comparing prices
Start with the manufacturer and model number, then check size, color, condition, and what is included. A different model, refurbished item, or bundle with missing accessories is not a like-for-like alternative, even if its listing looks similar. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends comparing matching products and checking the details of online offers in its online shopping guidance.
For home products, confirm whether the price is for the complete appliance or furnishing, or for a particular size, finish, component, or bundle. Read the listing rather than relying on a product photo or a broad product name.

Compare current prices across sellers
Search for the exact model at several retailers and compare the prices available now. A sale badge or percentage-off claim does not establish that an offer is the best available price. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) notes that prices can vary even during major sales; its online shopping advice recommends checking more than one retailer.

Use price history as context, not proof
If a price-history service covers the precise product and seller, it can help show whether the current price is unusual. Coverage may be incomplete, so an absent listing or unsupported reference price proves little. Treat the history as one point of comparison alongside current retailer prices, not as evidence by itself that the discount is genuine.
Verify comparison-site and automated results
Comparison sites and automated deal tools can help you find listings, but their results are leads rather than guarantees. Coverage differs, and comparison-site rankings may be influenced by commission; a top result does not prove best value, and a lower ranking does not necessarily mean a worse price. Check the actual listing on the retailer’s site, including the selected model and final checkout amount. See the CMA’s tips for shopping online and its advice on checking online offers.

Compare the total amount you will pay
Calculate the checkout total for each offer: item price plus delivery and any mandatory or otherwise unavoidable charges. A lower headline price can cost more once shipping or fees are added. In the UK, CMA guidance says traders must show total prices up front in covered invitations to purchase, including charges customers cannot avoid. This is UK-specific guidance, not a statement of consumer law everywhere. The CMA’s price-transparency summary says: “Prices must be clear, complete and accurate.”
Compare totals on the same basis—for example, delivery to your address and the same delivery speed. If a charge depends on location or a choice at checkout, establish whether it applies before deciding which offer is cheaper.
Compare unit prices when quantities differ
When offers contain different quantities, compare the cost per kilogram or gram, litre or millilitre, or individual item, as appropriate. This is useful for household consumables, multipacks, and products sold in different sizes. A bigger pack or multi-buy promotion is not automatically better value; the unit price can be higher, and it can vary by shop and over time. The CMA explains how to use unit pricing in its short guide to unit pricing.
Check the seller and the conditions attached to the offer
- Seller and authenticity: Check who is actually selling the item, particularly on a marketplace. Be cautious if a branded product is offered at an implausibly low price; the FTC advises shoppers to check the seller and listing details.
- Condition and included items: Confirm whether the product is new, refurbished, or used, and whether the stated accessories, parts, or bundle items are included.
- Qualifications: Look for required bundles, membership, or loyalty-program enrollment that changes the price or who can claim it.
- Delivery promise: Check the estimated delivery timing and whether it suits your needs, not just the delivery charge.
- Returns and warranty: Read the retailer’s return and refund terms and check what warranty applies to this product and seller.
- Price-match or later-adjustment terms: If these matter to you, check whether the retailer offers them and what conditions apply. FTC advice also recommends checking whether a later price drop could qualify for a credit or refund.
Offer terms and consumer protections depend on the retailer and jurisdiction. Do not assume that a price-match promise, return option, warranty, or post-purchase adjustment is available unless the applicable terms say so.

A practical way to compare two offers
Put the details side by side before choosing. If the products are not the same model and condition, first decide whether they are genuine alternatives; do not treat their prices as a direct comparison.
| What to compare | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer, model, size, and color | Record the exact listing details | Record the exact listing details |
| Condition and included items | New, refurbished, or used; list what is included | New, refurbished, or used; list what is included |
| Checkout total | Item price plus delivery and unavoidable charges | Item price plus delivery and unavoidable charges |
| Price context | Current competing prices; price history if available | Current competing prices; price history if available |
| Unit price, if quantities differ | Cost per appropriate unit | Cost per appropriate unit |
| Seller and offer terms | Seller, delivery, returns, warranty, qualifications | Seller, delivery, returns, warranty, qualifications |
Choose the offer that best fits your needs after checking both the total cost and the conditions—not simply the listing with the largest discount label or highest comparison-site position.
