Keep repository-specific bugs, code tasks, and contributor reports in GitHub Issues. Use Plane for project-centered planning that needs its own backlog, cycles, modules, releases, milestones, or coordination across projects. Before adding Plane, check whether GitHub Projects already provides the planning views your team needs.

What belongs in GitHub Issues?

GitHub Issues is the natural home for work closely tied to a repository, its code, pull requests, or its contributor community. Keeping the conversation with the code makes the relationship between a reported problem and its implementation straightforward.

  • Repository-specific bugs, feature requests, and tasks.
  • Work whose status needs to connect directly to pull requests. Supported pull-request keywords can automatically close linked issues.
  • Contributor-facing reports submitted through repository issue forms or templates.
  • Issues that should use GitHub metadata such as labels, issue types, sub-issues, dependencies, and milestones.

GitHub documents these capabilities in its Issues documentation, including how issue tracking relates to repository work.

When does Plane make more sense?

Plane is a better fit when the team treats work as a project backlog rather than primarily as a repository’s issue queue. Its documented work-item model is organized around projects, with planning concepts and layouts intended for coordinating work beyond an individual repository.

  • Premium-weight paper is perforated to detach easily
  • Snag-resistant coil and extra-strong back are perfect for notes on the go
  • Gray, navy or maroon cover, 7-1/4" x 9-1/2", 84 sheets
  • Use project-specific work item states and types, custom properties, and parent-child relationships when a team needs its own planning structure.
  • Use cycles and modules to group and timebox work; connect work with milestones and releases; and use initiatives to track coordination across projects.
  • Choose among list, board, calendar, table, or timeline layouts when those views suit the workflow.

Plane’s documentation describes a work item as “a single piece of work your team tracks in Plane.” See its official documentation for the current feature model. The documentation also lists a GitHub integration, but its existence alone does not establish exactly which data syncs, in which direction, or under what plan. Verify the current integration behavior and plan requirements before building a workflow around it.

Check whether GitHub Projects is enough first

If the need is mainly a better planning view over work already in GitHub, GitHub Projects may be sufficient without a second tracker. Projects can include issues, pull requests, and ideas, and display them in table, board, or roadmap views. Teams can filter, sort, and group work, add custom fields, configure charts, and automate project routines. GitHub describes a project as “an adaptable collection of items” that can be viewed in those layouts and stays up to date with GitHub data.

Feature availability and account eligibility may vary, so confirm what applies to your organization.

Review GitHub’s Projects documentation and issue-tracking documentation against the planning gaps you are trying to solve. If its views and fields cover those needs, keeping work in the GitHub ecosystem can avoid another place to maintain.

Choose the boundary using these questions

Question Lean toward GitHub Issues or Projects Lean toward Plane
Where is the work owned? It belongs to a specific repository or its contributor community. It has an independent project identity or coordinates work across projects.
How closely must it connect to code? Issue discussion, pull requests, and repository status should stay together. Project planning is primary, with code links as one part of a broader workflow.
Which planning structure is needed? Projects’ views, fields, iterations, and automation cover the workflow. The team needs Plane’s documented cycles, modules, milestones, releases, or initiatives.
How does work arrive? Repository contributors submit structured reports through issue forms or templates. Work enters through a broader project intake and follows a project work-item lifecycle.
What reporting is required? GitHub Projects’ views and charts answer the team’s questions. A separate project work-management space and Plane’s documented dashboards or analytics are useful.
What will operating two systems cost? Assess migration, duplicate entry, notification load, permissions, and the effort required to maintain links. The cited product documentation does not quantify these costs.

Neither product’s documented model makes one boundary universally correct. Decide based on the scope of the work and the planning concepts the team actually uses, rather than assuming that one tool is always more capable.

How to use both without duplicate authoritative work

If the team keeps both, define ownership by work type and make the system of record explicit. The following split is an operational recommendation based on the products’ documented models, not a vendor-mandated policy.

  1. Assign repository work to GitHub Issues. Keep repository-specific defects, code changes, and contributor-facing reports there.
  2. Assign broader planning to Plane. Use it for cross-repository initiatives and project planning that needs its own cycles, modules, releases, or wider work-item structure.
  3. Link only genuinely related records. For each linked pair, state which record owns status, acceptance criteria, and closure.
  4. Verify integration behavior in your configuration. Do not assume a link or integration synchronizes every field or status automatically.
  5. Revisit the boundary if work is routinely copied. Narrow the overlap or choose one authoritative location when duplicate records create uncertainty.
