Use a Rune when its matching storage has room and you have a worthwhile way to spend the refill. A Rune fills a resource storage; it does not buy an upgrade, finish a timer, or guarantee the resource you need most. Supercell’s rule is explicit: “You can’t use a Rune if the respective Storages are full.”
What a Rune does—and what it does not do
Supercell says Home Village Runes of Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir completely fill their respective storages. Builder Base Runes fill Builder Base storages. A Rune cannot be activated when the matching storage is full. Supercell Support: Magic Items & The Trader.

A Rune is a resource refill, not an upgrade-completion item. Books and Hammers are separate Magic Items with different effects; a Rune does not remove an upgrade timer. Use it only after choosing what the resource will fund.
Decide whether to use it now
- Identify the matching storage. Keep Home Village and Builder Base resource plans separate.
- Check whether the storage has room. If it is full, spend some of that resource on an available upgrade or other useful purchase first. Then activate the Rune when you can accept the refill.
- Pick a use for the filled storage. Have a relevant building, defense, wall, troop, spell, hero, or other eligible upgrade ready, as applicable to that resource and your account.
- Compare it with your actual bottleneck. If another resource is limiting progress, or you have no useful purchase lined up, wait rather than choosing a Rune simply because it is available.
Capacity, costs, and eligible upgrades depend on account progression, so there is no fixed amount or universal best time that applies to every player. The full-storage restriction is an official rule; the rest of this timing framework follows from the Rune’s refill function and the player-specific nature of upgrade priorities.

Choose based on the resource and your plan

Set upgrade priorities around how you play
There is no official universal Rune ranking or upgrade order. An independent upgrade guide cautions that a fixed troop-and-hero sequence assumes a particular army and play style. Its adaptable framework is to prioritize troops and spells used by your main army, keep heroes broadly caught up, and give defense more weight for war than for farming or pushing. For example, an Elixir Rune may be less useful than Gold if your immediate progression is blocked by a Gold-cost building; a Dark Elixir Rune is a poor fit if no eligible Dark Elixir purchase is ready. The right choice depends on your current storage room, available upgrades, and goals—not a ranking that ignores your account.

When farming may be the better option
Runes are convenient, but they are not equivalent to unlimited resources. Supercell documents Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir from attacks, with loot limited and partly dependent on the opponent’s Town Hall; Star Bonus rewards can also include these resources. Supercell Support: Loot and Star Bonus.

If you can earn the resource through play and have no urgent use for a Rune, keeping it for a moment when storage room and a useful expense line up may suit your account better. The available evidence does not establish a numeric Rune-versus-farming return, so compare convenience and your immediate needs rather than assuming a fixed efficiency advantage.

Check seasonal rewards before choosing
Reward menus can change. In its February 16, 2026 Gold Pass announcement, the Clash of Clans team described choice nodes such as Rune of Gold versus Rune of Elixir, and said pass rewards scale to Town Hall and Builder Hall levels at the start of the season. The team framed Choice Nodes as letting players line rewards up with “your current Town Hall level & upgrade plans.” Check the live season track before deciding which reward is currently offered. Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to use a Rune on full storage: the matching Rune cannot be activated until the storage has room.
- Activating before choosing a use: a refill does not itself complete an upgrade or remove its timer.
- Treating every Rune as equally valuable: the most useful resource depends on what is blocking your account and what you can spend next.
- Assuming a Rune always beats farming: attacks and Star Bonus are other resource sources, though loot is limited.
- Copying another player’s rigid upgrade order: army composition, hero progress, play frequency, and whether you prioritize war, farming, or pushing can change the sensible order.
- Assuming reward tracks never change: check the current season rather than relying on an old list of rewards.
