rekordbox lets you sort playlist tracks by a selected item such as Key or BPM, and its playlist Sort command changes the playlist’s track order. The manual does not document a combined Key-plus-BPM sort priority. Whether that order appears on a particular CDJ depends on the device and export workflow, so it is not accurate to say that a sort never reaches the player.

Browser sorting and playlist sorting are different

In rekordbox 7.2.14, the browser lets you sort track information while browsing; Key and BPM are among the available track data. This changes how tracks are listed in the browser. The Collection playlist-palette Sort command is different: it changes the playlist’s track order. The distinction matters if you want to prepare a sequence rather than just find a track.

Sort a playlist by Key or BPM

  1. In rekordbox’s EXPORT mode, open the playlist in the Collection playlist palette.
  2. Open the playlist menu and select Sort.
  3. Select the sort item, such as Key or BPM.
  4. Use the arrow to choose ascending or descending order. The manual states, “The track order is changed.”

These steps follow AlphaTheta Corporation’s rekordbox 7.2.14 Operating Instructions, dated April 9, 2026. The documented operation selects a sort item and direction; it does not describe setting a priority such as Key first, then BPM within each key.

Can rekordbox sort by Key and BPM together?

The manual reviewed documents one selected sort item for the playlist-palette operation, not a multi-level Key-plus-BPM sort. If you need both properties to shape a set, sort by the primary criterion and then arrange the playlist order manually, or use a workflow that explicitly supports the ordering you need. Do not assume that choosing one sort and then another creates a stable secondary sort: that behavior is not established by the cited instructions.

Manually arrange playlist order

To drag tracks into a custom sequence, first make sure the playlist is sorted by track number; the manual says manual reordering by dragging is available only in that state. Drag a track up or down to place it where you want. This is useful when a strict key or tempo progression needs exceptions, transitions, or a deliberate opening and closing track.

Will the sorted playlist order appear on a CDJ?

rekordbox’s official FAQ documents exporting tracks and playlists to USB storage for CDJ use, but the sources do not explicitly confirm that the specific Key/BPM playlist-sort action is displayed in the same order on every CDJ model and export mode. Nor do they establish that the order is always lost. Check the playlist’s actual order in rekordbox, use the export workflow supported by your target equipment, and verify the result on that model rather than relying on a universal rule.

AlphaTheta’s rekordbox for Mac/Windows (ver. 7) FAQ says some newer equipment, including the CDJ-3000X, requires OneLibrary export to browse exported tracks and playlists. Follow the instructions for the specific player: CDJ library-format requirements are not uniform. A USB storage device is an export destination, but the FAQ cited here does not establish a universal capacity, speed, filesystem, or compatibility specification.

What to check when the CDJ order differs

  • Confirm you changed the playlist’s order with the playlist-palette Sort command, not just the browser’s visible listing.
  • Check the order in the rekordbox playlist after sorting or dragging; manual drag order requires sorting by track number.
  • Confirm that the USB export method and library format match the target CDJ’s instructions, including OneLibrary where required.
  • Test the exported playlist on the specific CDJ model and note the rekordbox version and export method. The documented sources do not resolve every model-and-workflow combination.
