Connect each ESC’s battery-positive lead to the PDB’s labeled positive pad and its ground lead to the labeled ground pad—but use the wiring diagram for your exact board. Pad positions, wire colors, signal connections, voltage limits, and capacitor requirements vary by model. Confirm the hardware ratings, solder and inspect every connection while unpowered, then follow the ESC and PDB manuals for a cautious first power-up with propellers removed.
Identify your ESC, PDB, battery, and flight controller
Before soldering, identify the exact models of your electronic speed controllers (ESCs), power distribution board (PDB), battery, and flight controller (FC). Find the wiring diagrams or manuals for all of them and keep the relevant diagrams visible at the workbench. Use the board’s labels and documentation—not a pad layout copied from another build.
Check that the PDB is suitable for the battery voltage, number of ESCs, and current demands of your setup, and that each ESC accepts the battery voltage. DJI’s E2000 manual says to consider the PDB’s trace spacing and current capacity in relation to ESC count and battery voltage; that is a selection principle, not approval of a particular board for your build. Its manual dates to 2016, so use its wiring illustration only for the documented E2000 setup, not as a universal pinout: DJI E2000 documentation.

DJI lists an electric soldering iron and solder among the tools for its ESC-to-PDB connection. A suitable iron tip, heat setting, and technique depend on the board, pad size, and wire gauge; there is no single temperature or wattage that fits every assembly. Work from the manufacturer’s instructions and use a temperature-controlled iron if you need to adjust heat for the joint.

Dry-fit and route the leads
Position the ESCs and PDB before trimming wires. Route each power lead so it reaches its intended pad without tension, avoids moving parts, and does not bunch up over neighboring solder points. DJI advises cutting wires to length and avoiding excess cable near the joints. APD recommends flexible, high-temperature silicone-insulated power wire for its ESCs and mechanical strain relief to help withstand vibration and crashes; its wire guidance is specific to its products, not a universal gauge recommendation: APD support and product documentation.
DRONA’s soldering guidance recommends tinning both surfaces before joining them, then aiming for a shiny, slightly domed joint rather than a dull or blobby one: DRONA soldering guide.

Solder each ESC’s power leads to the PDB
- Locate the documented pads. Find the positive and ground pads using the exact PDB diagram and board markings. Do not assume that positive is always the inner pad or that ground is always on the outside.
- Match polarity. Connect the ESC’s battery-positive lead to PDB positive and its ground lead to PDB ground. DJI’s E2000 example uses red VCC and black GND, while the NXP HoverGames S500 example also shows red to positive and black to negative on that board. Treat those colors as examples, not a substitute for checking the labels and manuals.
- Make the joints. Tin the wire and pad as appropriate for your board, then solder the lead in place. Avoid excess solder and keep strands and solder clear of adjacent pads.
- Handle capacitors by the ESC instructions. If your ESC setup calls for an input capacitor, follow that model’s specified capacitance, voltage rating, polarity, and placement. For example, APD says its included input capacitor must be installed with correct polarity. Its F-Series instructions call for additional capacitance when the ESC is more than 12 cm from the power source and give further recommendations for certain higher-current applications; those requirements apply to the documented APD products, not all ESCs. See the APD support and product documentation.
DJI’s manual illustrates a PDB with outer ground pads and inner positive pads. That arrangement belongs to its example board and must not be generalized to other PDBs. For another board-specific illustration, the archived NXP HoverGames S500 instructions show red and black power connections on that assembly: NXP HoverGames S500 ESC-to-PDB instructions.
Connect the ESC control leads to the flight controller
Power leads and control leads serve different purposes. Connect each ESC’s documented signal output to the FC motor output assigned to that motor. Connect signal ground as required by both devices’ documentation. In its general PWM example, APD says signal and ground are the minimum connections; it also calls for a common ground in harness-based installations and recommends signal-ground wires for signal integrity.

Do not assume wire colors, connector order, or extra pins are standardized. Some ESCs include telemetry, power, or firmware connections in addition to signal and ground. Connect those only when the specific ESC and FC manuals call for them. DJI’s E2000 signal-wire colors differ from other ESC examples, which is another reason to follow pin labels and model documentation rather than color alone. APD’s instructions are available in its support and product documentation.

- Positive and ground leads reversed at any ESC or PDB pad.
- Solder bridges between adjacent pads, stray wire strands, or other loose metal.
- Dull, weak-looking, or mechanically loose joints that may indicate a poor connection.
- Damaged insulation, pinched leads, or wires routed where vibration or moving parts could affect them.
- An open connection or a short circuit.
A multimeter continuity check can help investigate connections and possible shorts, but a continuity beep by itself does not establish that the wiring is safe, correctly polarized, or suitable for power. DJI warns to check for open and short circuits; APD and DRONA also call attention to correct polarity, solder quality, bridges, and loose metal. Follow the manuals’ inspection guidance for your hardware.
Power up cautiously and check motor direction
Remove all propellers before configuration or motor testing. Follow the ESC and PDB manuals for the first-power procedure. APD recommends a smoke stopper or its specified low-voltage, current-limited procedure for its F-Series ESCs to reduce the risk of damage from incorrect wiring. Its bench-supply guidance is model-specific, including a caution about supplies that cannot absorb regenerative current; do not apply it to other ESCs or PDBs without their manufacturers’ instructions. A smoke stopper is a protective aid, not a guarantee that a faulty connection cannot cause damage. See the APD support and product documentation. DRONA also advises powering up for the first time with propellers removed: DRONA soldering guide.

After power is established safely, check motor order and rotation with the propellers still off. In DJI’s documented setup, motor direction can be reversed by swapping any two motor phase wires. Other ESCs may support a configuration method instead, so use the procedure for your specific motor and ESC system.
Account for integrated power and ESC designs
Not every build has separate ESCs wired to a simple PDB. Some boards combine power-module and distribution functions, while other systems integrate ESCs and distribution. Their power routes and FC interfaces are not interchangeable with a basic PDB connection.
For example, Holybro documents its PM07 as distributing power and signal for up to eight ESCs and supplying regulated 5.2 V to compatible flight controllers. It also states that the PM07 does not power servos through the FMU PWM-OUT plus/minus pins, and that the ADC rail’s 5 V comes from the FC CAP&ADC port rather than the PM07. Those details apply to the Holybro PM07; check your own board’s manual for its power paths and limits.
