Use light, progressive sanding and a plastic-compatible primer or paint when you need a cosmetic finish. Minimize material removal around mounting, sealing, and mating surfaces. Acetone vapor smoothing is an option only for known-compatible ABS or ASA, and it can alter dimensions, soften the surface temporarily, and blur edges or details. No finishing method by itself proves that a vehicle part is strong enough for its job.
What to check before finishing
Start by identifying the filament, then check its manufacturer’s compatibility and safety guidance. Do not use a solvent process on unidentified plastic. Before sanding or coating, record critical dimensions and protect surfaces that must fit precisely, such as mounting holes, seals, and mating faces.
How much finishing is appropriate depends on the part’s function. A cosmetic cover has different requirements from a bracket or component exposed to load, heat, vibration, or road conditions. FDM parts can have direction-dependent properties, and finishing can change material or dimensions. A smooth surface is not evidence of adequate strength.

How to sand with minimal material removal
- Remove supports and obvious defects carefully. Avoid gouging thin walls or cutting into corners and interfaces.
- Begin with a conservative grit. Choose a starting grit based on the layer lines and surface condition; there is no single grit that suits every print. Use progressively finer grits instead of trying to remove the surface in one aggressive pass.
- Wet sand where suitable. The cited finishing guides recommend wet sanding to limit dust, friction, and heat buildup. Confirm that the material and the part’s geometry are suitable for the process.
- Clean and inspect between grit stages. Check dimensions, wall thickness, and fit as you work. Stop if sanding is changing a critical feature or removing more material than the cosmetic finish requires.

When to use primer, paint, or epoxy
Primer and paint
If the part needs paint, choose a primer intended for the specific plastic and follow the product label. Primer and paint can improve appearance, but a coating does not restore removed material or certify structural strength. Keep coating thickness off interfaces where it could interfere with fit.
Epoxy coating
Epoxy is another possible surface-finishing option, but its coverage and thickness can affect fit. Treat it as a coating, not as proof that the underlying print can carry a particular load.

When acetone vapor smoothing is appropriate
Acetone vapor smoothing is specifically discussed for ABS and ASA. Use it only when the filament is known to be compatible and the expected surface changes are acceptable. It can swell the surface, reduce dimensional accuracy, temporarily soften the part, round edges, and obscure small details. That makes it a poor choice for precision interfaces or features whose shape matters.

Original Prusa 3D Printers’ ASA guidance warns: “Acetone and its vapors are highly flamable!” The source spells “flammable” that way. Do not improvise a heated solvent process: acetone vapor is highly flammable. Follow current product safety information and applicable local requirements.
Choose a method by its tradeoffs

Manage sanding and solvent hazards
Sanding can create dust, while solvent use can expose you to vapors and skin contact. OSHA’s solvent guidance recommends evaluating exposure, reducing airborne concentrations through appropriate ventilation, addressing skin exposure, and using suitable protective equipment. OSHA’s respiratory protection guidance discusses respiratory protection; controls depend on the chemical, operation, and setting. Consult current product safety data and local requirements, and keep ignition sources away from flammable solvent vapors.

Recheck fit—and validate consequential parts
After finishing, measure critical dimensions again and confirm that interfaces still fit. For a load-bearing, safety-related, or otherwise consequential vehicle part, obtain engineering review and validation for the actual application. The relevant factors include the polymer, print orientation and settings, geometry, and expected loads. Visual inspection alone cannot establish strength.
