To size a portable power station, total the watt-hours your essential devices need during the outage, then check separately that the station can supply their combined running watts and startup surges. A setup that only needs internet may use far less energy than a complete desk with a computer and monitor. Include networking gear for every hour it must stay on, even after you stop working.
Decide what must stay on
Start with the outcome you need: internet access, a working desk, or both. A laptop can often run on its internal battery while the station powers the router and an external monitor, reducing the station’s load. That trade-off depends on your equipment and whether you need the laptop available throughout the outage.
For each device, record its power draw, the number of hours it must run, and whether it needs to stay on continuously. The router or modem may need to run longer than the work session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Networking: modem, router, mesh node, or other equipment required for connectivity.
- Computer: laptop or desktop; account for a laptop’s internal battery if you plan to rely on it.
- Displays and peripherals: monitor, dock, external storage, or other devices you actually need.
- Run time: estimate the hours each device must operate, including time outside your work session.
Use the device label or power adapter as a starting point, but a nameplate maximum may be higher than ordinary use. Where practical, measure your actual setup with a plug-in watt meter.

Calculate the energy you need in watt-hours
Watts (W) describe the power a station must deliver at one time. Watt-hours (Wh) describe energy capacity and help estimate how long the battery can run a load. A station needs adequate capacity and adequate output; one rating cannot substitute for the other. APC explains the relationship between load and UPS runtime in its UPS buying guide, while Eaton also covers load sizing in its UPS sizing guide.
For each device, multiply its watts by its required hours. Add the results:

Device watt-hours = device watts × hours of use
Total Wh = sum of each device’s watt-hours
Illustrative home-office calculation
PowerMatchLab’s example uses an 18 W router/modem for 24 hours, a 60 W laptop for four hours, and a 30 W monitor for four hours. These are example assumptions, not universal device draws or measured results.
| Device | Assumed draw | Hours | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Router/modem | 18 W | 24 | 432 Wh |
| Laptop | 60 W | 4 | 240 Wh |
| Monitor | 30 W | 4 | 120 Wh |
| Total before allowances | — | — | 792 Wh |
The 24-hour network load contributes more energy than either four-hour desk device. If your router only needs to run during work hours, use those hours instead; if it must stay on overnight, include them.

Allow for conversion losses and reserve
The sum above is the energy delivered to devices, not a guarantee that a battery with the same advertised Wh capacity will cover the whole outage. Conversion losses and a reserve for uncertainty reduce the energy available for your planned loads. In the example above, PowerMatchLab applies assumed efficiency and reserve factors and estimates about 1,118 Wh. That figure is based on its assumptions, not a universal conversion factor or test result. Actual runtime varies with the devices, operating conditions, and station.
Use your measured or best available device loads, add the hours each must run, then choose capacity with room beyond the raw total. If an outage lasting longer than your estimate is possible, plan for that additional time rather than treating a calculated figure as guaranteed runtime.

Check output watts separately from capacity
Once you have an energy estimate, add the watts of devices that may run at the same time. Compare that simultaneous load with the station’s published continuous AC output. Also check whether any equipment has a startup demand that could exceed the station’s surge rating. Confirm that the model has the outlets and USB or DC ports your equipment needs.
Leave output headroom rather than planning to operate at the rating’s limit. APC says a UPS should generally have output watt capacity 20–25% higher than the total power drawn by connected equipment; that guidance is specifically for UPS sizing, not a universal power-station rule. Eaton recommends a UPS VA rating at least 15% above total load, while Schneider Electric’s FAQ describes operating a UPS below its maximum, around 80% as a preferred level. These are separate manufacturer recommendations for UPS equipment, not one harmonized requirement or a substitute for the specific power station’s manual. See Schneider Electric’s UPS FAQ.

Check whether it can keep devices from rebooting
Battery capacity does not establish how quickly a station switches to battery power when utility power fails. If a router, desktop, or active call cannot tolerate an interruption, check the exact model’s published UPS or EPS transfer behavior. If the interruption would be unacceptable, use a suitable UPS for the equipment that needs continuity; verify its ratings and compatibility rather than assuming a power station will behave like a dedicated UPS. APC’s UPS buying guide explains UPS selection and runtime.
Use published examples as planning references, not promises
Anker SOLIX’s August 18, 2026 guidance estimates roughly 100–160 W and 1,000–1,500 Wh or more for an eight-hour home-office plan. Anker describes that capacity as a planning estimate, not a lab-tested runtime. Its article gives the 1,024 Wh C1000 Gen 2 as an example for a lighter single-monitor setup, and the 2,010 Wh S2000 or 2,048 Wh C2000 Gen 2 as examples for a steadier workday or more output headroom. These are manufacturer examples, not independent comparisons or guarantees for a particular desk. Your calculated load and the model’s specifications should guide the choice.
Quick Recap
Final sizing checklist
- List the devices you need and decide which must run continuously.
- Find or measure each device’s actual watts; note any startup demand that matters.
- Multiply each device’s watts by its own required hours, then add the Wh totals.
- Allow for conversion losses, reserve, and any extra outage duration you want to cover.
- Check battery capacity in Wh and continuous output and surge capability in W as separate requirements.
- Confirm the model has the required ports and, if continuity matters, suitable documented UPS/EPS behavior.
- Read the exact product manual and follow applicable local electrical rules. Do not connect a portable station to household wiring unless the connection is designed and approved for that use; get qualified electrical advice for any house-circuit connection.
