Size a home backup system in two separate steps: calculate the battery energy needed to run your selected appliances for the outage, then choose an inverter that can power the loads you expect to run at the same time—including their startup demand. A battery with enough kilowatt-hours can still be paired with an inverter that cannot start a compressor; a high-output inverter can still run out of stored energy quickly.
What do inverter size and battery size mean?
Inverter power is measured in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). It tells you how much electrical load the inverter can supply at a moment in time. Battery energy is measured in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). It indicates how much energy is stored and helps estimate how long selected loads can run.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) distinguishes power capacity from energy capacity in its solar and storage overview. Treat them as separate sizing questions: inverter output determines which combination of appliances can operate together; usable battery energy helps determine runtime.

Start with the appliances and circuits you actually need during an outage, not the home’s monthly electricity bill. For each load, estimate its power draw and how many hours it will operate. Add the resulting watt-hours, then account for battery discharge limits and system losses.

1. Make a critical-load list
Write down each appliance or circuit you want backed up. Use its nameplate rating or a measured power reading where available, and estimate its hours of use during the outage. A refrigerator, for example, should not automatically be counted as running at its rated draw continuously; use a realistic estimate for its operating pattern. Include only loads you intend to support.
2. Calculate the energy target
For each load, multiply watts by expected hours of use. Add the results to get the planned outage energy in watt-hours (Wh), then divide by 1,000 to convert to kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Compare your energy target with the battery’s usable energy specification, not just its nominal or advertised capacity. The manufacturer’s permitted depth of discharge and the inverter’s conversion losses affect how much stored energy reaches your loads. Battery chemistry and product specifications govern the appropriate adjustment. DOE’s 2004 residential battery fact sheet warns that lead-acid batteries cannot be fully discharged; do not treat its basic arithmetic as a current product recommendation.

That fact sheet gives a rounded example: 1,000 watt-hours (1 kWh) per day on a 24-volt battery bank corresponds to 42 amp-hours of useful storage. It is an illustration, not a complete sizing prescription, because discharge limits and system losses still need to be considered. See DOE’s residential battery fact sheet.
What size inverter do I need for my home?
Add the operating wattage of the loads that could run simultaneously. The inverter’s continuous output should be sufficient for that combined load. Then check the inverter’s surge rating against startup requirements for motors and compressors, using appliance nameplates and manufacturer specifications. The cited DOE guidance does not establish a universal surge allowance, so avoid sizing with an assumed blanket multiplier.

For a practical estimate, decide which appliances may overlap in use. If you can stagger nonessential loads, that may reduce the simultaneous demand the inverter must cover. Do not count that strategy as a substitute for checking the startup requirements of equipment that must operate.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow long will a home battery last during an outage?
Runtime depends on the critical loads being powered, the usable energy stored when the outage begins, and any solar production available during the outage. DOE and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) state that the hours a PV-and-storage system can power critical loads depend on stored energy at outage start, critical-load level, and PV availability. In other words, a battery’s label alone cannot predict your home’s outage runtime.

If you expect solar to recharge the battery or contribute directly, use estimates for your location and the season and time of day in question. Production varies with weather, shading, and sunlight. DOE’s 2024 guide to resilient tribal facilities illustrates a workflow that combines hourly meter data with location-specific PVWatts data; its examples are project-specific, not household recommendations. See DOE’s 2024 guide.
A separate DOE/NREL study simulated 8,760 possible outage start times—one for each hour of the year—and modeled outages of approximately two hours. Those figures describe the study method, not a prediction of how long a particular home’s outage will last. See the DOE/NREL report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will my solar panels work when the grid goes down?
Not necessarily. A grid-tied solar array generally shuts down during a grid outage unless it is configured with suitable inverter and storage capability. DOE explains: “For solar panels to produce power on their own, they need two things: a properly configured inverter and a storage system.” Check that the proposed system can isolate from the grid and supply the backed-up circuits during an outage; ordinary grid-connected solar alone should not be assumed to provide backup. See DOE’s solar and resilience guidance.
What compatibility and installation details should I check?
- Battery and inverter voltage: Confirm that the battery’s DC voltage matches the inverter input and that the specific products are compatible. DOE’s older fact sheet describes 12-, 24-, and 48-volt battery strings as choices shaped by inverter input, battery type, and required storage—not as interchangeable options.
- Continuous and surge output: Compare both inverter ratings with the simultaneous operating loads and appliance startup specifications.
- Usable battery energy: Check the manufacturer’s usable-energy and discharge specifications, rather than relying on nominal capacity alone.
- Backup circuits and transfer capability: Establish which circuits the system will supply and how it will safely separate from the grid during an outage.
- Site and local requirements: Panel capacity, wiring, utility requirements, and local building, fire, and electrical rules can affect a permanent installation. DOE’s solar and resilience guidance discusses system configuration; applicable installation rules depend on location.
Whole-home backup is a system design question, not just a choice of battery capacity. The loads, inverter, storage, panel, wiring, and grid-isolation arrangement must work together.
Quick Recap
A practical sizing checklist
- List the appliances and circuits that must run during a power cut.
- For each one, record rated or measured watts and estimated outage-use hours.
- Multiply watts by hours, total the Wh, and divide by 1,000 to get the load energy estimate in kWh.
- Compare that target with usable battery energy, allowing for manufacturer discharge limits and inverter losses.
- Separately total loads that may run together and check the inverter’s continuous and surge ratings against appliance data.
- Confirm battery voltage and manufacturer compatibility with the inverter.
- If solar is part of the backup plan, estimate production for the location, season, and outage period rather than assuming a fixed contribution.
- Have the full installation checked against the home’s electrical setup, utility requirements, and local codes.
