For a personal Microsoft account, use the Microsoft account security dashboard: open Advanced security options, scroll to Sign out everywhere, and select Sign out. Microsoft says it can take up to 24 hours to reach browsers and apps, and Xbox consoles are excluded.
Sign out of your Microsoft account everywhere
- Go to the Microsoft account security dashboard and sign in to the personal account you want to sign out.
- Open Advanced security options.
- Scroll to Sign out everywhere, then select Sign out and confirm if prompted.
Microsoft says, “Signing out may take up to 24 hours.” The action signs the account out of browsers, apps, and other places it is used, except Xbox consoles. It ends sessions; it does not change your password.
How long does signing out everywhere take?
Allow up to 24 hours for Microsoft’s account-wide sign-out to take effect across browsers and apps. It is not necessarily immediate, so do not assume every active session has ended as soon as you submit the request.

Xbox consoles
Microsoft specifically excludes Xbox consoles from the account-wide sign-out. Sign out of the console separately if that is your concern.

Microsoft 365 and Office
Office has a separate remote sign-out control. Open your Microsoft account Installs page, find Devices, and use the Office sign-out option for the relevant device. Microsoft says Office may take up to 72 hours to detect the change. This removes Office activation until you sign in again, and it does not sign out the OneDrive sync app.
Outlook.com or Hotmail in a browser
To sign out of Outlook.com or Hotmail in the browser you are using, select your account initials or picture and choose Sign out. Microsoft says signing out of the Outlook app is no longer possible.

Windows session on a device
Signing out of Windows closes the local Windows session; it is not the remote Microsoft account procedure. On the device, open Start, select your account icon, then choose Sign out. Open applications will close, so save your work first to avoid losing unsaved changes.
Personal accounts versus work or school accounts
The account-wide instructions above are for personal Microsoft accounts. Microsoft’s personal-account guidance does not establish the equivalent remote sign-out control or behavior for organization-managed work or school accounts. Contact your organization’s administrator or follow its account-specific guidance.

If you are signing out because of suspicious activity
Microsoft presents sign-out everywhere as a step to take when you think someone may have unauthorized access. Review your account security and sign-in methods as well; ending sessions alone does not change a password or resolve every kind of account compromise. For public computers, Microsoft recommends using private browsing, signing out when finished, and closing all browser windows. Microsoft lists Microsoft Authenticator and physical security keys among passwordless sign-in options.
