You can sign a PDF on your Mac without printing it: open it in Preview, choose Markup > Sign, then create or select a signature and place it on the page. Preview can capture a signature from your trackpad, your Mac’s camera, or a nearby iPhone or iPad.
Sign a PDF in Preview

Open the PDF in Preview. If it opens in another app, find it in Finder, Control-click it, choose Open With, and select Preview.

If the Markup toolbar is hidden, click Show Markup Toolbar. Then click Sign.

Choose a saved signature, or create one using the trackpad, camera, or a nearby iPhone or iPad.

Click the signature to add it to the document. Drag it to the signing line, then use its handles to resize it.

Save the PDF when you are finished.

Choose how to create your signature
| Method | What you need | How it works |

| Trackpad | A Mac with a trackpad | Write your signature with a finger when prompted. On a Force Touch trackpad, firmer pressure makes the stroke heavier and darker, according to Apple. |
| Camera | Your Mac’s built-in camera and white paper | Write your signature on white paper and hold it level with the guide shown on screen so the camera can capture it. |
| iPhone or iPad | A nearby iPhone or iPad that meets Apple’s Continuity requirements | Select the device from the Sign options, then write your signature on its screen. |
Apple documents these options in its Preview signing guide. For the nearby-device option, see Apple’s Continuity system requirements before troubleshooting; not every Mac-and-device combination is supported. If Continuity is unavailable, use the trackpad or camera option instead.
Fill in other PDF fields
Some PDFs let you click a form field and type directly; others do not. If a field will not accept typing, Apple’s documented workaround is to add a text box with Preview’s markup tools and position it over the relevant area. Enhanced contact AutoFill requires macOS 14.2 or later, and not every PDF supports it. Apple describes these options in its PDF forms guide.

Reuse or remove a saved signature
Preview saves signatures you create so you can select them again from the Sign menu. To remove a saved signature, open that menu and use its signature-management option. When iCloud Drive is enabled, Apple says saved signatures are available on other Macs using iCloud Drive; removing one also removes it from those Macs.

Preview’s Sign tool adds a signature to a PDF. Apple’s instructions explain how to create, place, and resize that signature graphic; they do not establish that it is a certificate-backed digital signature or determine whether it meets a particular legal requirement. Check the recipient’s requirements if the document calls for a specific signing method.
