To turn off a Chromebook using its keyboard, press and hold the physical Power key for three seconds. This is not a Ctrl+Alt key combination. If a menu appears, select Power off or Sign out, as appropriate. Google documents this Power-key method.
Turn off your Chromebook with the Power key
- Locate the Chromebook’s physical Power key.
- Press and hold it for three seconds.
- If a menu appears, choose Power off to turn the Chromebook off, or Sign out if you only want to end the current session.
Google’s keyboard-shortcuts help page does not list a letter-and-modifier-key combination for shutting down a Chromebook. The documented keyboard-based action is holding the Power key—not pressing a combination such as Ctrl+Alt and another key. See Google’s Chromebook keyboard shortcuts.
Shut down from the on-screen Power menu
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Select Power.
- Select Shut down.
This is an on-screen alternative if you prefer not to use the Power key. Google’s instructions are in Sign out or turn off your Chromebook.

Does closing the lid turn off a Chromebook?
No. Closing the lid puts the Chromebook to sleep; it does not fully shut down the device. Use the Power key or the on-screen Power menu when you want to turn it off.

Can you customize a Chromebook shutdown shortcut?
Google directs users to the Shortcuts app to explore or customize supported keyboard shortcuts. Some shortcuts cannot be modified. The official shortcut documentation does not list a dedicated letter-and-modifier-key shutdown shortcut. See Google’s instructions for customizing keyboard shortcuts.
