Start by checking whether your router already has a configurable firewall. Buy a separate firewall only if your network needs a boundary, protection features, management, or capacity that the router and endpoint firewalls do not provide. Then compare candidates by deployment fit, protection with the intended features enabled, administration, support, and total ownership cost—not by the device price or a headline throughput figure alone.
First decide what traffic boundary you need to protect
NIST defines firewalls as “devices or programs that control the flow of network traffic between networks or hosts employing differing security postures.” That means a firewall need not be a separate box: it may be software on a computer, a network appliance, or a cloud-delivered service. The right starting question is where you need to control traffic—on one computer, at a home or office network boundary, between branch offices, or across cloud and on-premises systems. NIST’s SP 800-41 Rev. 1, published in September 2009, treats selection, configuration, testing, deployment, and management as parts of the firewall lifecycle.
Check the firewall you already have
For a home network, inspect your wireless router’s manual or ask your internet service provider how to configure its network-firewall features. CISA notes that most wireless routers include configurable firewall features, but some may be switched off by default. Its home network security guidance also recommends host-based firewalls on connected computers; modern Windows and Linux systems include customizable options. A computer firewall filters traffic to or from that host, while a router firewall operates at the network boundary, so the two can provide complementary coverage.

CISA also recommends updating software, removing unnecessary services, hardening factory defaults, and changing default usernames and passwords. A dedicated firewall does not take the place of those steps.

Choose a deployment model that matches the network
Hardware, software, and cloud delivery can coexist in one design; none is universally best. A rough heuristic is that hardware may suit larger or midsize networks, software can suit simpler environments, and cloud options may help distributed sites or teams with limited firewall-management capacity. Actual fit depends on topology, workload, staffing, required features, and the vendor’s implementation.
| Type | Where it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Router or dedicated appliance | A router may already protect a home network. A dedicated appliance can make sense when a buyer needs separate network-boundary hardware or functionality beyond the current router. | WAN compatibility, interface speeds, throughput with required security features enabled, management effort, firmware and security-update support, and subscription requirements. |
| Host-based firewall | Filters traffic to or from an individual computer and can complement a network firewall. | Which devices are covered, how policies are managed, and whether the settings meet the need for that host. Its scope is the computer where it runs. |
| Business next-generation firewall (NGFW) | An appliance that may combine network filtering with functions such as intrusion prevention, deep packet inspection, application control, web filtering, or encrypted-traffic inspection. | Which functions are present on the specific model, which require separate licenses, and what performance remains with those functions active. |
| Software or virtual NGFW | Software deployed on suitable infrastructure; it can offer flexibility where capacity or deployment needs change. | Infrastructure requirements, capacity limits, licensing, operations responsibility, and how it fits existing network controls. |
| Cloud-delivered firewall or firewall-as-a-service | May suit distributed networks, remote users, or cloud traffic. | How traffic is routed, who manages policy and operations, reliability, available controls, and recurring charges. |
If you determine that separate network-boundary hardware is needed, search for a small-business firewall appliance rather than assuming a consumer router provides business NGFW functions. Confirm capabilities and ongoing requirements for the specific model before buying.

Compare specific capabilities, not feature labels
NGFW terms are not a guarantee that two products offer equivalent protection. Build a short list of the controls your network actually needs, then ask vendors what is included, what is separately licensed, and what each feature does. Depending on the environment, questions may include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Do you need intrusion prevention (IPS), application or user awareness, web filtering, threat intelligence, encrypted-traffic inspection, VPN, or network segmentation?
- Are the controls available on the proposed model and included in the quoted subscription, or do they require separate licenses?
- Does bundled data-loss prevention (DLP) or application control meet the actual requirement, or is a dedicated product still needed?
- Can the firewall integrate with identity, logging, endpoint, networking, and cloud systems already in use? Are those integrations maintained and useful to the team’s operations?
Check Point’s enterprise firewall buyer’s guide raises useful selection questions about ease of use, consistent policy, threat prevention, application and identity controls, automation, audit and reporting, and hybrid-cloud support. It is vendor-authored guidance, so use those topics to frame questions rather than as independent comparative testing.

Check throughput with the protections you plan to use
Do not treat a headline throughput number as the speed you will get with your intended policy. Enabling multiple security services can reduce performance, and vendor lab results may not reflect your traffic mix, network layout, or configuration. Ask for throughput figures with the specific features enabled and the test method and traffic profile used.
TechTarget’s firewall selection article reports that an NSS Labs comparison published in July 2018 tested 10 NGFW products, with measured throughput from 1,028 Mbps to 7,888 Mbps; three results were substantially below vendor-stated claims. Those figures describe a historical comparison, not current devices or a present-day ranking. Fortinet’s 2021 performance paper says its metrics came from ideal internal lab tests and actual performance may vary. Treat lab numbers as method-dependent evidence, not a promise about your network.

Assess administration, support, and lifecycle
A firewall that is difficult for your team to configure, monitor, or maintain can undermine the value of its feature list. Ask for a demonstration using the tasks administrators will actually perform, and check whether the product provides adequate reporting, logging, role separation, and centralized management for your environment. Check Point’s guide also suggests asking about consistent policy and audit capabilities.
- How long are firmware and security updates, and product support, available for the exact model or service?
- What support channels, response terms, and hardware replacement arrangements apply?
- Can the team understand and maintain policies, investigate alerts, and review logs with the available tools?
- Will identity, endpoint, logging, networking, and cloud integrations work with the systems you use?
Terms vary by model, service, and contract; the cited selection guidance does not establish current support or replacement terms for particular products. Get those details in writing for the offer you are considering.

Compare the full cost of ownership
A purchase price is only one part of the budget. TechTarget’s 2026 CISO buyer guide identifies potential costs including hardware or commodity compute, one-time and recurring licenses and subscriptions, support, management consoles, integration, training, deployment and piloting, transition from legacy products, upgrades, and staff time for management and monitoring. The mix depends on deployment and vendor.
Request comparable quotes that cover the same feature set, number of sites or users, support period, and subscription term. Include the work required to deploy and operate the solution, not just the initial device or service charge. There is no useful universal firewall price: scope, model, licensing, and support differ, and current prices change.
Use vendors as a shortlist, not a verdict
A reseller’s October 2, 2026 guide discusses Cisco, Meraki, Fortinet, and Sophos as options in its partner lineup. That makes them examples to investigate, not independent evidence that one is best. For any shortlisted brand, check the current model’s availability, subscriptions, support period, and management requirements directly, then compare it against your network’s needs.
A practical buying sequence
- Map the network: identify users, sites, remote connections, cloud workloads, and where traffic enters and leaves.
- Review existing controls: configure the router firewall and host firewalls before deciding that new hardware is necessary.
- Write down required protections: separate must-have controls from optional features and confirm what is included versus licensed separately.
- Match delivery to operations: compare appliance, software, and cloud options based on traffic paths, reliability, staffing, and management needs.
- Request feature-on performance evidence: ask for the test conditions and security services enabled, and assess relevance to your traffic.
- Compare support and full cost: get written lifecycle and support terms and quotes with equivalent scope and subscription periods.
- Plan configuration and testing: define policy, test expected traffic and security controls, and assign ongoing responsibility for updates, monitoring, and review.
The process matters after purchase: NIST’s lifecycle approach emphasizes configuring, testing, deploying, and managing the firewall, rather than treating the transaction as the end of the security work.
