Shopping for new auto or homeowners insurance could lower your bill, but savings are not guaranteed. The most useful tools are practical: get several written quotes, compare equivalent coverage, check your deductible, verify discounts, and review your policy at renewal. This guide focuses on U.S. auto and homeowners insurance, where premiums, required coverage, rating rules, and discounts vary by state and insurer.

1. Get multiple written quotes

Ask several insurers for written quotes rather than relying on a single price estimate. For homeowners coverage, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends contacting several insurers and comparing both cost and coverage. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) likewise advises auto shoppers to provide each company with the same information. A quote reflects specific details and proposed coverage; it is an estimate, not a guarantee that the final policy will be identical.

When requesting quotes, provide accurate, consistent information about the household, vehicles or property, prior coverage, and desired limits. Ask how long the quote is valid and whether any assumptions or conditions could change the price before the policy is issued. If you are shopping for homeowners coverage as a mortgage borrower, you can ask your loan officer whether a proposed policy meets the lender’s requirements.

2. Use a like-for-like comparison worksheet

Premiums are individualized, and insurers may use different rating factors. A lower headline price does not necessarily mean a better deal if the quote has lower limits, a larger deductible, or less protection. The NAIC puts it plainly: “It is important to compare the same or similar coverage when you shop.”

Record these details for every quote:

  • Insurer and policy term: Note the company and the dates or length of the quoted policy.
  • Total premium: Compare the full cost for the same term, not only an initial payment or installment.
  • Limits and covered risks: Check the amount of protection and which people, vehicles, property, or losses are covered.
  • Deductibles: Record the amount you would pay before coverage applies, including separate deductibles where relevant.
  • Options, endorsements, and exclusions: Identify included extras, added protections, and important exclusions.
  • Discounts: Note which discounts are included, what qualifies the household, and any conditions for keeping them.
  • Help and service: Consider how to reach the insurer or agent when you need policy support or make a claim.

For homeowners insurance, compare the dwelling limit with a realistic estimate of what it would cost to rebuild the home, not simply its market or purchase price. Review other property limits and covered risks as well. A quote that is cheaper because it leaves out protection you need is not an equivalent offer.

3. Review deductibles and coverage choices

A higher deductible may reduce a premium, but it means paying more yourself after a covered loss. Before choosing one, consider a plausible claim and whether you could comfortably cover that amount. The CFPB and NAIC both flag the deductible as a factor to weigh when shopping.

For homeowners coverage, base the dwelling amount on rebuilding needs and consider property characteristics and local disaster risks. Standard homeowners insurance typically does not cover flood damage; a separate flood policy may be needed if flood protection is relevant to your location or circumstances. The CFPB says flooding causes $8 billion in damages in the United States in an average year. That is a U.S. average-year figure, not a forecast of your personal risk.

For auto coverage, compare the same limits and optional benefits across quotes before deciding whether to change or drop coverage. State requirements and your circumstances matter, so do not treat a lower premium as a reason by itself to remove protection.

4. Ask each insurer to check discounts and bundles

Ask every insurer which discounts your household qualifies for, what documentation is needed, and what conditions must continue for the discount to apply. NAIC consumer materials describe possible auto discounts such as multi-policy, continuous-insurance, good-student, defensive-driving, and some group-membership discounts. Homeowners insurers may offer discounts related to protective features, memberships, or bundling. Availability and eligibility differ by company and state; an advertised discount is not proof that you qualify.

Compare the total price and coverage of a bundle against separate policies. Bundling may be convenient or less expensive in some cases, but it does not always beat buying policies separately. An independent agent may represent several companies and provide multiple quotes, according to the NAIC; confirm which insurers and products the agent can actually quote for your state.

5. Recheck your policy at renewal

Use renewal time to tell your insurer about meaningful changes to your household, vehicles, or property, then confirm that the limits, deductibles, options, and exclusions still fit. For homeowners coverage, check whether rebuilding needs or property features have changed and whether local disaster risks affect the protection you want. For auto coverage, compare options using consistent limits and benefits before making a change.

Keep a copy of the current declarations page and compare it with new quotes. If a renewal price changes, ask the insurer to explain the change and identify any available discounts or coverage adjustments. State insurance departments can explain local rules and help you understand consumer protections; the final policy wording and eligibility terms come from the insurer.

What makes a quote the best deal?

The best deal is not necessarily the lowest premium. Compare total cost for the same term alongside limits, deductibles you can afford, covered risks, endorsements, exclusions, discount conditions, and access to service. Because state rules and insurer rating practices differ, verify the details for your location before choosing a policy.
