A beginner can learn the fundamentals of football photography with an entry-level mirrorless camera, but getting the shot depends on anticipating play and controlling autofocus—not on a camera body alone. At Motherwell FC’s Scottish Premiership match against Falkirk on 4 April 2026, photography student Chantelle Cook shadowed club photographer Raymond Davies and practised approaching a fast-moving sport from pitchside.
What Cook learned at Motherwell FC
Cook studies photography at Edinburgh College. She first picked up a digital camera in 2023 and was more familiar with commercial photography, fashion and portraiture than sport. Her goal for the match was to learn how to approach different kinds of football images and capture dramatic moments.
“I am drawn to the excitement of sports photography; you never know exactly what’s going to happen next,” Cook said. The difference from a planned portrait session was immediate: “You’re right in front of the action pitchside. It’s the exact opposite of studio-based photography, where everything is planned.”

The feature appeared in Digital Camera magazine’s issue 308, the June 2026 issue. The publisher’s issue page also confirms Cook’s masterclass with Davies. The story was later syndicated by Yahoo Tech on 3 October 2026; the match itself took place on 4 April 2026.

The cameras: entry-level and professional bodies
Cook used a Canon EOS R50, an entry-level mirrorless camera with a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, according to the feature. Davies, Motherwell’s club photographer, used a professional-grade Canon EOS R5 Mark II.
That contrast gives useful context, not a controlled camera test. The feature does not establish that one body produced a better image, or that the R50 is sufficient for every professional assignment. It also does not report Cook’s lens, focal length, shutter speed, aperture, ISO or frame rate, so those details should not be inferred from the camera models.

Autofocus choices that help follow the play
The feature’s practical advice is to configure autofocus for moving people and reduce the chance that the camera abandons the intended player. The precise names and availability of modes vary by camera, so use the closest equivalent in your model’s menu.
Detect people or athletes
Set subject detection to people or athletes if your camera offers that option. This gives the autofocus system a subject category to prioritize while players move through the frame.

Use continuous autofocus
Choose Servo AF or the camera’s continuous-AF equivalent. Unlike single autofocus, it keeps adjusting focus as the player changes distance from the camera. Cook said she understood the basics but was keen to learn “the exact shutter speeds to choose”; the feature does not state which shutter speeds she used.
Limit focus switching to intervening players
When bodies pass between you and the player you are following, autofocus can shift to the nearer obstruction. Reduce tracking sensitivity to objects crossing in front of the subject, if your camera provides that control. The aim is to make the system less eager to switch targets, not to guarantee that it will hold focus in every situation.

Pause autofocus when distance is stable
An AF Stop button can temporarily halt autofocus when your subject is likely to remain at roughly the same distance or when the camera is at risk of focusing on the background. Its function depends on camera configuration; check your manual for the button assignment and behaviour on your body.
Why football requires a different approach from portraiture
In a portrait or studio setup, the photographer can often direct the subject and plan the moment. Football is less predictable: players accelerate, change direction and overlap, and a decisive action may happen quickly. Continuous focus and subject detection help with movement, while sensitivity controls and AF Stop offer ways to manage what the camera prioritizes.
These controls address focus, not every challenge of sports photography. The feature does not provide exposure settings or a prescribed shutter speed, and its advice should be treated as a starting point rather than a universal recipe for every camera, lens or match.
