When you encounter a tractor, combine, or grain cart, slow down early and leave plenty of space. These machines may move slowly, take wide turns, occupy much of a narrow road, and be hard for their operators to see around. Pass only when it is legal, you can see the road clearly, and you have enough room to finish safely. Rules for passing and required equipment vary by state and locality.
What makes farm equipment different on the road?
Farm machinery is large, heavy, and often much slower to accelerate or stop than passenger vehicles. It may slow further on hills or curves. A machine can also take up most of a narrow lane, cross the center line, or swing wide to turn. The operator may not see a car close behind or alongside the equipment.
Harvest activity can put equipment on public roads near dawn or dusk, when visibility is limited. Mud, crop material, or other debris may also be left on the roadway. Harvest dates vary by crop and region, so stay alert on rural roads rather than relying on a particular calendar.
What should motorists do when they catch up to farm equipment?
Slow down and leave room
Reduce speed as soon as you see the equipment, avoid distractions, and do not tailgate. Give yourself time to react if the machine slows, brakes, or turns. Leave enough distance to see the road ahead when possible, but do not treat that view as permission to pass.

Expect turns and changing position
Farm equipment may need extra room to make a wide turn or position itself for a turn. Do not drive close beside it or assume that a move toward the right edge means the operator is inviting you to pass. Watch for signals and changes in position, especially before intersections and field entrances.
Pass only when the entire maneuver is safe and legal
Before overtaking, check that the operator is not signaling or positioning for a left turn. Make sure you have a clear view of the road ahead, that passing is permitted, and that there is enough room to complete the pass without forcing another road user to brake or move aside. Do not pass on a curve or near a hill crest when you cannot see far enough ahead, or where signs or pavement markings prohibit passing.

Passing restrictions are location-specific. Indiana and Maryland guidance, for example, warns against passing within 100 feet of certain intersections, railroad crossings, bridges, elevation structures, or tunnels. Treat that as state-specific guidance, not a nationwide rule; check the law where you are driving. If a wide machine is approaching and the road is too narrow for both vehicles to pass safely, slow down or stop and yield as needed. Do not squeeze through a gap that leaves little room for error. Watch for road debris and poor visibility
Look for mud, crop material, or other debris on the road, particularly near field entrances and along routes used by machinery. Use headlights when visibility is poor and follow the applicable local guidance. At dawn and dusk, be especially alert: a machine may be slower and harder to see than a passenger vehicle.
How can farm-equipment operators make road travel safer?
Keep visibility devices clear and working
Use the lights, reflectors, and slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem required in your jurisdiction. Keep them visible and unobstructed; dust can reduce how well they show. The CDC and NIOSH discuss operator visibility and other agricultural safety measures in their agriculture safety guidance. A visibility device can help identify equipment, but it does not guarantee that every approaching driver will see it or respond safely.

Requirements differ by state. Minnesota’s Department of Transportation says equipment traveling below 30 mph should use an SMV emblem; that is Minnesota guidance, not a general national threshold. Confirm the rules that apply to your equipment and route.
Check the route and loaded height
Before driving, consider road restrictions and the height of the equipment or load. MnDOT’s September 16, 2026 release refers to a 13-foot-6-inch legal height limit in Minnesota and says taller vehicles or loads may need a permit from the agency responsible for the road. Do not assume that limit applies in another state or on every road.

Let traffic pass only where it is safe
When a safe pull-off is available, use it to allow following traffic to pass. Do not move onto a soft, wet, steep, or otherwise unsafe shoulder just to clear a queue. You may need to complete a turn or continue to a suitable place. Motorists should be patient and leave room for the operator to do so.
Protect the operator as well as other road users
Road visibility is only one part of safe machinery operation. CDC/NIOSH also addresses seat belts and rollover protection for agricultural workers. Follow the equipment’s safety requirements and applicable worker-safety guidance; those operator protections are distinct from traffic rules for motorists.

The two Minnesota periods overlap, so the change in counts is not by itself evidence of a year-to-year trend. The Minnesota totals are state figures, and Maryland’s figure covers Maryland only. Which rules should you verify locally?
There is no single set of state-specific figures in these examples that can safely be applied nationwide. Check your state and local requirements before relying on a particular passing distance, speed threshold, equipment-lighting rule, SMV emblem requirement, or maximum height. For motorists, signs and pavement markings on the road remain essential cues; for operators, verify requirements for the equipment and each planned route.
