Give ongoing household members the narrowest Resident permissions they need, and use Guest access for visitors who need temporary, local access to selected security accessories. Before inviting anyone, check that your home hub is set up; then review remote control, editing, camera, and any separate accessory-app permissions individually.

Choose Resident or Guest access

Apple Home offers two roles with different scopes. A Resident is generally suited to someone who needs ongoing access around the home. A Guest is for time-limited access to selected security-related accessories, such as a door lock. Apple’s Share control of your home guide describes what each role can access.

Permission Resident Guest
Accessories available All accessories in the home Only security-related accessories you select
Where control works Locally; remote control can be allowed separately Local-only access
When access works At any time Anytime, Specific Dates, or Specific Days & Times
Edit accessories, scenes, automations, or users Owner can manage this permission separately Not stated for Guests in Apple’s sharing guidance
Camera viewing Owner configures camera access separately Not stated for Guests in Apple’s sharing guidance

Apple says the Guest option is unavailable when the Home does not contain security-related accessories. For a visitor who only needs to unlock a particular door, choose Guest and select only that lock rather than granting access to every accessory.

Set up sharing with a home hub

A home hub is required for sharing on the latest Apple Home version, inviting people while you are away, and managing remote access and permissions. Apple’s iPhone guide identifies a HomePod speaker or Apple TV 4K as examples of a home hub. Without one, some sharing and control are limited to the home’s Wi-Fi network. See Apple’s iPhone instructions for inviting people for current interface details.

Review a Resident’s permissions separately

Resident access to all accessories does not mean every optional permission should be enabled. In Home Settings > People, select the person and check Control Accessories Remotely and Add and Edit Accessories. Allow remote control only if they need to operate the home when away from its local network. Allow editing only if they should be able to change accessories, scenes, automations, or invite other people.

Decide who can view camera footage

Camera access is a separate privacy choice. In Home Settings > People, select a person and configure Cameras. Give access only to people who should be able to view the home’s cameras. Apple’s camera setup guidance says HomeKit Secure Video footage is analyzed and encrypted on the home hub, then uploaded to iCloud so only the owner and people they share with can view it. That is Apple’s description of its product, not an independent security audit.

Remove access completely when it is no longer needed

Remove the person from the Home app when their access should end. Then check the accessory manufacturer’s app: removing someone from Apple Home may not revoke access granted separately in that app. Consult the app, its manual, or the manufacturer if you are unsure where its permissions are managed.

Troubleshoot a failed Home invitation

If you cannot send or accept an invitation, Apple recommends updating devices and Apple Home, enabling Home in iCloud, enabling Apple Account two-factor authentication, and setting up a home hub. If the recipient cannot find the invitation notification, have them check Home Settings > Invitations. See Apple’s invitation troubleshooting steps.

Keep AirPlay and speaker access separate

Sharing a Home does not let another user add HomePod, Apple TV, or AirPlay-compatible TVs and speakers to the Home app. Speaker and TV access has separate settings: you can allow everyone, people on the same network, or invited Home users, and optionally require a password. Review those controls separately if your concern is who can play audio or video on shared devices; Apple’s Home sharing guide covers these options.
