Apple makes the Magic Trackpad for Macs and iPads, but it can also be used with a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. The important distinction is between basic pointer control and full multitouch support: Windows can often pair the trackpad without extra software, but gestures and Precision Touchpad settings usually require a compatible third-party driver.
The setup depends heavily on which model you own. Magic Trackpad 1 uses two AA batteries and is not supported by the popular open-source mac-precision-touchpad project. Magic Trackpad 2 has a rechargeable battery, a Lightning port, and is supported by that project for both USB and Bluetooth connections.
Check which Magic Trackpad you have
| Model | How to identify it | Basic Windows support | Gesture options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Trackpad 1 | Two AA batteries; round power button; no Lightning port | Usually works as a generic Bluetooth mouse | Magic Utilities is the practical option |
| Magic Trackpad 2 | Built-in rechargeable battery; Lightning port; rear switch with green indicator | Bluetooth, and USB with a suitable driver | mac-precision-touchpad or Magic Utilities |
Apple does not provide a general-purpose Windows driver or Windows gesture application for either model. Apple’s published specifications describe compatibility with Macs and iPads, so Windows functionality comes from its standard Bluetooth HID support or third-party software.

What you need
- A Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer with Bluetooth.
- A compatible USB Bluetooth adapter if the computer has no built-in Bluetooth.
- Two fresh AA batteries for Magic Trackpad 1, or a charged battery for Magic Trackpad 2.
- A USB mouse or other pointing device while installing drivers and changing settings.
For advanced gestures, choose either Magic Utilities, a commercial driver that supports both generations, or the free open-source mac-precision-touchpad driver, which specifically supports Magic Trackpad 2 and 3.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Trackpad is wireless and rechargeable, and it includes the full range of Multi-Touch gestures and Force Touch technology.
- Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content.
- It features a large edge-to-edge glass surface area, making scrolling and swiping through your favourite content more productive and comfortable than ever.
- Magic Trackpad pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
Put the trackpad into pairing mode
Magic Trackpad 1
- Install two fresh AA batteries.
- Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby Macs, PCs, phones, and tablets. A nearby Mac can reconnect to the trackpad before Windows finds it.
- Press and hold the round power button on the right side.
- Release the button when the green LED begins blinking.
A blinking LED means the trackpad is discoverable. If the LED does not light, replace the batteries. If it lights briefly but does not blink, disable Bluetooth on nearby devices and power-cycle the trackpad again.
Magic Trackpad 2
- Charge the trackpad.
- Disconnect the Lightning cable from the trackpad. Leaving it connected can prevent or complicate Bluetooth pairing.
- Turn the rear switch off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
- Leave the trackpad switched on while Windows searches for it.
The Lightning cable can be useful for charging and, with a compatible driver, wired operation. Disconnect it when you want to pair and use the trackpad wirelessly.
Pair it with Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Click the network, sound, or battery icon beside the clock, then select the Manage Bluetooth devices arrow. Alternatively, open Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Select Magic Trackpad when it appears under available or new devices.
- Complete any prompt and click Done.
If the trackpad is missing, go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Under Device settings, change Bluetooth devices discovery from Default to Advanced, then search again. Advanced discovery displays more Bluetooth device types.

- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Click Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Choose the Magic Trackpad and follow the instructions.
- Click Done if Windows displays that option.
Windows should reconnect to the trackpad automatically when it is nearby, powered on, and Bluetooth is enabled. If Windows asks for a pairing code, try 0000.
What works immediately after pairing?
With no Apple-specific driver installed, Windows may expose the Magic Trackpad as a standard Bluetooth mouse. Typically, you can move the pointer with one finger and press the surface for a primary click. Two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, three-finger gestures, battery reporting, and custom click zones may be unavailable.
This behavior is normal. Successful Bluetooth pairing does not mean Windows has registered the device as a Precision Touchpad.

Enable gestures on Magic Trackpad 2 with the open-source driver
The mac-precision-touchpad project implements the Windows Precision Touchpad protocol for Magic Trackpad 2 and 3. It does not list Magic Trackpad 1 support.
Install from a release package
- Open the project’s GitHub page and go to Releases.
- Download the latest release matching your Windows architecture.
- Extract the downloaded package if it is compressed.
- Locate
AmtPtpDevice.inf. - Right-click the INF file and choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
- For Bluetooth use, pair Magic Trackpad 2 manually through Windows Bluetooth settings after installing the driver.
Use a signed release package rather than an experimental development build. The project’s normal installation instructions do not require you to enable Windows test signing or install its certificate manually. Do not enable test mode unless you specifically understand why a particular development build requires it.
If you use Chocolatey, the project also documents this command:
choco install mac-precision-touchpad
Chocolatey must already be installed and available in your command shell.
Bluetooth support in the project has had limitations, including possible input lag, crashes, incomplete battery reporting, and unfinished automatic USB-to-Bluetooth switching. If reliability matters more than cost, Magic Utilities is the better-supported alternative.

In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
In Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
Depending on the driver and Windows version, available options include:
- Touchpad sensitivity
- Tap-to-click
- Two-finger scrolling and scroll direction
- Pinch-to-zoom
- Two-finger tap for right-click
- Tap-and-drag
- Three-finger gestures
- Four-finger gestures
On Windows 11, expand Three-finger gestures and Four-finger gestures to assign actions such as switching applications, showing the desktop, opening Task View, or changing virtual desktops.
If Touchpad does not appear in Settings, Windows is still treating the device as a generic mouse or Bluetooth peripheral. Reinstall the compatible driver and restart the PC. Windows only displays the full gesture controls for devices recognized as Precision Touchpads.
Use Magic Utilities instead
Magic Utilities is a commercial Windows driver and configuration application that explicitly supports Magic Trackpad 1 and Magic Trackpad 2. It includes a fully functional trial and supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 on 64-bit x64 and ARM systems; 32-bit support has been discontinued.

Fix a paired trackpad that does not work
Windows can save a Bluetooth device under the wrong category. This is especially common when the device appears paired but produces no pointer movement.
Check the device category
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. The trackpad should be under Mouse, keyboard & pen.
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > View more devices. The trackpad should be under Input.
If it is listed under Other devices, remove it, toggle Bluetooth off and on, then pair it again. Also check that Magic Trackpad 2 is disconnected from its Lightning cable during wireless pairing.
Remove a stale Bluetooth entry
- Open Device Manager. You can right-click Start and select it.
- Choose View > Show hidden devices.
- Expand the Bluetooth-related sections.
- Right-click the dimmed or stale Magic Trackpad entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows and pair the trackpad again.
Fix common connection and gesture problems
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| It does not appear in Bluetooth | Replace Magic Trackpad 1 batteries, charge Magic Trackpad 2, disconnect its Lightning cable, disable nearby Bluetooth devices, and set Windows 11 discovery to Advanced. |
| Magic Trackpad 1 LED does not blink | Hold the power button longer, replace both batteries, and disconnect nearby Macs. The trackpad may still be connected to another computer. |
| It works only as a mouse | Install mac-precision-touchpad for Magic Trackpad 2, or Magic Utilities for either generation. |
| Scrolling stops after sleep | Re-pair the Bluetooth connection or restart the driver. Magic Utilities includes tools for restarting or reinstalling its driver after wake. |
| Pointer movement lags or disconnects | Update the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver, move the adapter away from USB 3.0 devices, reduce 2.4-GHz interference, and test another Bluetooth adapter. |
| The driver will not install | Use a signed release package, install AmtPtpDevice.inf, remove conflicting software such as Trackpad++, and restart Windows. |
Bluetooth quality depends on the PC’s adapter, antenna position, driver, and surrounding radio traffic. USB 3.0 devices, crowded 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, wireless headphones, and poorly positioned desktop antennas can all contribute to lag. Use the computer manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver rather than a nonstandard Bluetooth stack such as BlueSoleil when possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Boot Camp drivers solve this on every PC?
No. Boot Camp packages are not a universal Apple input-driver bundle for every Windows computer. The open-source project notes that Boot Camp 6.1.5 includes an official Magic Trackpad 2 driver for certain T2-based Macs, but that does not provide general Magic Trackpad 1 support or guarantee compatibility on a non-Apple Windows PC.
For a standard Windows computer, use generic pairing for basic control, mac-precision-touchpad for Magic Trackpad 2, or Magic Utilities for both models.

Windows 10 support note
Windows 10 reached the end of normal Microsoft support on October 14, 2025. Existing installations can continue to run, but normal free security updates and technical support are no longer provided. The pairing and settings paths above still apply to compatible Windows 10 installations, but Windows 11 is the supported current target.
FAQ
Can I use Magic Trackpad 1 with Windows 11?
Yes. It can usually pair and work as a basic Bluetooth mouse. Full gestures are not provided by the mac-precision-touchpad project, so use Magic Utilities if you need scrolling, multitouch clicks, battery information, and configurable gestures.
Can I use Magic Trackpad 2 with Windows without software?
Yes, for basic pointer movement and clicking. Windows may treat it as a generic mouse, so Precision Touchpad gestures generally require mac-precision-touchpad or Magic Utilities.
Why does my Magic Trackpad appear in Other devices?
Windows has probably saved it with the wrong device classification. Remove the entry, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and pair it again. In Windows 10 it should appear under Mouse, keyboard & pen; in Windows 11 it should appear under Input.
Does Magic Trackpad 2 work over USB on Windows?
USB operation is supported by compatible third-party drivers. The open-source mac-precision-touchpad project supports Magic Trackpad 2 over USB, while Magic Utilities also advertises USB support for rechargeable models.
Why are there no Touchpad settings in Windows?
Windows has likely registered the trackpad as a standard mouse rather than a Precision Touchpad. Install a compatible driver and restart Windows. Magic Trackpad 1 will not work with the mac-precision-touchpad project.
The Bottom Line
Pairing an Apple Magic Trackpad with Windows is straightforward, but pairing alone usually provides only generic mouse behavior. Magic Trackpad 1 is best paired with Magic Utilities if you want gestures. For Magic Trackpad 2, install the open-source mac-precision-touchpad driver for a free Precision Touchpad option, or use Magic Utilities for broader support and easier troubleshooting.
