Questionable means the NFL considers it uncertain whether the player will play; it does not mean he is definitely out, nor does it guarantee a normal workload if active. Check the official injury report, pick an eligible fallback before kickoff, and compare both players’ game times with your league’s lineup lock. Inactive designations are typically made about 90 minutes before kickoff, which may be too late to use an alternative whose game has already started.

What “Questionable” means—and what it does not

The NFL’s official status definition is “Uncertain if player will play.” The designation is not a percentage chance and does not confirm that the player will be active or inactive. The NFL Competition Committee’s 2016 policy announcement likewise said a player should be listed as Questionable when there is a question about his availability. That is historical policy wording, not a new 2026 update. NFL Competition Committee policy revision announcement; NFL Football Operations Game Status Report policy.

Practice participation and game status are separate fields on the NFL injury report. Read the latest game status alongside the practice entries; a single practice designation is not the final game decision. The report changes as the game approaches, so check the current listing for the player and game. NFL injury report.

There is no current general statistic in the official sources cited here that gives the chance a particular Questionable receiver will play. Do not translate the label into a numerical probability. The NFL’s 2016 announcement cited an approximately 95 percent appearance rate for players then listed as Probable, but that category was later eliminated; the historical figure does not estimate a Questionable player’s current odds.

Check the clocks before choosing a fallback

NFL Fantasy Support says inactive designations are made about 90 minutes before scheduled game time. Treat that as an approximate timing guide, not a promise that every update will appear at an exact minute. NFL Fantasy Support: Auto-Swap Inactives.

Lineup locks depend on the fantasy service and league settings. As one dated example, NFL Fantasy’s published 2023 rules allowed a player’s status to be changed only before his team was scheduled to start, using NFL.com’s clock. That example should not be assumed to describe another platform or a custom league; check the current rules where you manage your team. NFL Fantasy lineup lock rules.

When roster options permit, a fallback whose game starts at the same time as or later than the questionable receiver’s game leaves more time to respond to late news. If your only preferred alternative plays earlier, you must decide before that alternative’s lineup lock; you cannot wait for a later inactive announcement and then move the player into a locked slot. This is practical timing guidance, not a universal guarantee about every fantasy platform.

Compare the questionable receiver with your alternative

Factor What to check
Availability Latest official game status, practice participation, and any confirmed inactive designation.
Timing Both kickoff times and the lineup lock in your specific platform and league.
Expected role Current team reporting and credible projections for likely routes, targets, or other role indicators. No player-specific workload evidence is established here.
Scoring and lineup fit Your league’s scoring format, lineup requirements, and the alternative’s expected production. NFL Fantasy describes projections as a resource, not a guarantee. NFL Fantasy Player Comparison tool.
Your risk tolerance Whether the uncertain receiver’s potential upside is worth accepting a late inactive or unclear role instead of the fallback.

If the receiver is active, that confirms availability—not a normal workload. Make the start/sit choice using the role evidence, scoring rules, and fallback rather than treating “active” as a projection. If he is inactive, use the fallback only if your roster and platform allow the change before lock.

A practical lineup checklist

  1. Earlier in the week: Review the NFL injury report and practice participation. Identify an eligible receiver to use if needed.
  2. Before the first relevant kickoff: Confirm your league’s lineup deadline, platform clock, and any custom lock settings.
  3. Rank your fallback: Compare likely role and expected use, then account for scoring format and matchup. Avoid relying on an earlier-starting alternative unless you are prepared to decide before it locks.
  4. As kickoff approaches: Recheck official status and reliable team reporting. Do not treat a rumor or the generic Questionable label as final inactive news.
  5. At inactive release: If the receiver is inactive, move in the fallback if it remains eligible and unlocked. If active, assess the available workload information against the alternative.
  6. If using automation: NFL Fantasy describes Auto-Swap Inactives as acting on players projected to score zero, with the manager ranking a backup list. Verify that the feature is enabled and how it behaves in your league before relying on it. NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives.
