For a more comfortable gaming setup, start with an arm’s-length viewing distance, put the screen slightly below eye level, match its brightness to the room, and reduce reflections. Take regular distance breaks and blink deliberately. These adjustments can help with common screen-related discomfort, but they are not a diagnosis or a substitute for an eye-care professional if symptoms persist.
How far should you sit from your gaming monitor?
Begin at about arm’s length. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) gives about 25 inches as a practical general target, while the American Optometric Association (AOA) gaming guidance says to stay at least 20 inches from larger screens. These are starting points, not exact requirements for every person or screen size.
Adjust until game text and interface details are comfortably readable without leaning forward. If they are too small, try the game’s interface or text-size options, or operating-system scaling, rather than moving closer. Screen size and individual vision needs affect the comfortable distance.

Position the display so you look slightly downward at it. As an ergonomic starting point, AAO EyeWiki places the top of the monitor at or just below eye level. Adjust the chair and display together so you can keep a relaxed posture rather than craning your neck.

What brightness should your monitor be for gaming?
There is no universal brightness percentage in the cited eye-health guidance. Set brightness in the room where you actually play: the screen should not look conspicuously brighter than its surroundings. Lower it if the display feels like a bright patch in a dim room; if the room is bright, you may need a different setting for comfortable visibility.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Also check what the screen reflects. Move or redirect nearby lamps, change the monitor’s position, or shield the window causing the reflection. AOA gaming guidance suggests keeping room lighting similar to screen brightness and tilting the bottom of the screen toward you to reduce glare. Make small changes and check whether reflections remain from your usual seating position.
How to build eye breaks into a gaming session
Use the 20-20-20 rule as a simple reminder: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. During the break, blink fully a few times instead of continuing to stare at the screen.

The AAO says people normally blink about 15 times per minute, and screen staring can cut that rate in half. That is a general comparison, not a measurement specific to gamers. Reduced blinking can contribute to dry-eye symptoms. If your eyes feel dry, AAO guidance says artificial tears may refresh them.
Do higher refresh rates reduce eye strain?
A higher refresh rate is a gaming display feature, but the cited eye-health guidance does not establish that choosing 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or 240 Hz reduces eye strain. EyeWiki discusses refresh rate, including low refresh rates in the broader context of computer vision syndrome; that does not establish a health benefit from upgrading to a high-refresh gaming monitor.

Choose a monitor refresh rate for gaming needs, not as a proven treatment for eye discomfort. Prioritize comfortable viewing distance, readable text, appropriate brightness, reduced glare, and breaks.

The AAO says blue light from screens has not been shown to damage eyes and does not recommend special blue-light-blocking glasses for computer use. Its guidance states: “The Academy does not recommend any special blue light-blocking eyewear for computer use.” Blue-light glasses are therefore not a default eye-strain fix.

Late-night light exposure may affect sleep timing, which is a separate issue from treating eye strain. A warmer or dimmer evening display mode can be a sleep-habit choice, but it is not established here as a way to relieve gaming-related eye discomfort.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will an anti-glare filter help?
A matte anti-glare monitor filter is an option if reflections remain after you adjust lighting and screen position. EyeWiki notes that antiglare filters reduce reflections and glare, but may not reduce asthenopia (eye strain). Treat a filter as a glare-control tool, not a cure for discomfort. Check its dimensions and mounting style against your monitor.
When should you contact an eye-care professional?
If discomfort or other symptoms continue despite changing your setup and taking breaks, contact an ophthalmologist or arrange an in-person eye exam. Do not assume persistent symptoms are caused only by monitor settings; an eye-care professional can assess your concerns.
