For the best Blu-ray picture and sound, connect a disc-drive Xbox Series X to a 4K HDR TV with the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, confirm the console recognizes the TV’s capabilities, and choose audio output settings that match your TV, soundbar, or receiver. If you use a receiver, Xbox’s general guidance is to connect the console directly to the TV and return audio over ARC or eARC when your equipment supports it.

Check that your Series X can play discs

Not every Xbox Series X has a disc drive. Microsoft lists a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive on disc-drive Series X models, while its all-digital model has no optical drive. Confirm the exact edition before buying or inserting a physical Blu-ray. See Microsoft’s Xbox Series X specifications.

Connect the Xbox and confirm 4K TV support

  1. Connect the console to the TV. Use the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable included with Series X. An additional cable is not required just to get started.
  2. Check what the Xbox detects. Open the Guide, then go to Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details. This shows the capabilities reported by the connected display.
  3. Enable the TV’s enhanced input mode if needed. Some televisions enable 4K, HDR, or other higher-bandwidth features only on selected HDMI ports, or require an enhanced/HDR mode in the TV’s settings. Labels and menus vary by TV model; consult its manual.

Xbox Series X can display 4K content over HDMI, but some of the console’s most advanced gaming features require HDMI 2.1. For Blu-ray playback, confirm the TV and the chosen HDMI input support the picture features you want rather than assuming every port has the same capabilities. Xbox’s setup guidance is in its November 6, 2020 Xbox Wire setup guide.

Choose a connection path for your sound system

When possible, connect the Xbox to the TV and use the TV’s ARC or eARC connection to send audio back to a compatible receiver or home-theater system. Xbox Wire recommends this general arrangement because the console’s video goes straight to the display rather than passing through an intermediary device.

  • 4K Networking: reproduce 4K videos in MP4 and you can output JPEG data in 4K resolution, to share photos from a camnera or camcorder

You can also connect the Xbox through an AV receiver or another device, but the full HDMI chain matters: the console-to-receiver connection and receiver-to-TV connection must support the video features you want. If 4K or HDR fails through the receiver, connect the Xbox directly to the TV temporarily to identify whether the receiver or another link is responsible.

Match Xbox audio output to the connected equipment

  1. Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
  2. Under HDMI audio, choose Bitstream out if the connected HDMI device supports a bitstream format such as Dolby Atmos or DTS:X.
  3. Under Bitstream format, select a format supported by the device receiving the audio, such as your receiver or soundbar. Do not select a format just because the Xbox supports it if the receiving device cannot decode it.

Microsoft lists Dolby TrueHD with Atmos, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, and up to 7.1 L-PCM among Series X audio capabilities. These are console output capabilities, not a guarantee that every TV, soundbar, or receiver supports each format. If you use headphones, the Xbox Wire guide points to the Headset audio section under Volume & audio output; it does not establish one best setting for every headset.

Troubleshoot missing 4K or HDR

If the Xbox does not offer 4K or HDR, check the signal path in order. Xbox’s guidance is to review display detection and TV input settings first, then isolate any receiver or other intermediate device.

  • In Settings > General > TV & display options, set display detection to Auto-detect rather than manually selecting HDMI or DVI.
  • Confirm the TV’s selected HDMI input supports HDR and that any enhanced or HDR input mode is enabled.
  • If content fails to display, check that HDCP 2.2 is enabled where applicable.
  • Use the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and install available firmware updates for the TV and AV receiver.
  • Temporarily connect the Xbox directly to the TV. If the picture features return, investigate the receiver or another device between the console and TV.

Xbox’s deeper fallback advice includes temporarily disabling 4K or HDR if they cause a blank screen or unusual colors, and disabling VRR if visual corruption occurs. These are compatibility troubleshooting steps, not picture-quality enhancements for Blu-ray movies. TV and receiver menu names vary, and Xbox’s cited guide dates to November 2020, so use current device manuals for model-specific instructions.

What to expect from Blu-ray app settings

The Xbox console settings above control the relevant HDMI display and audio output choices. Xbox Support has pages about Blu-ray/DVD setup and disc settings, but the detailed current app controls are not established here. Do not assume there is a particular Blu-ray app passthrough toggle or that an app-specific option overrides the console’s audio configuration.
