To use a Fitbit, charge it with the cable made for your exact model, pair it with the companion app, then wear it comfortably and sync it regularly. Fitbit controls and setup prompts differ by model, so use the instructions for your device rather than assuming every tracker or watch works the same way.
Charge your Fitbit before setup
Find the charger designed for your Fitbit model. Cable attachment methods vary: some chargers connect magnetically, while others use aligned pins or a clip. Google says the Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe use the same cable; that does not make the cable universal for other Fitbit devices. Check the model name on the device or its packaging before choosing a replacement.
Connect the charger to a computer USB port, a safety-certified wall charger, or another safety-certified low-energy power source. Keep the Fitbit dry, make sure the charging contacts are clean and aligned, and do not cover the device or charger while charging. Google’s guidance also recommends using the supplied charger and letting the device ventilate during charging.

Pair the Fitbit with your phone
The exact screens vary by device and app version. As one current example, Google’s Charge 5 getting-started instructions direct owners to connect the tracker to its charging cable, install the Google Health app from the appropriate app store, sign in with a Google account, and follow the on-screen pairing prompts. App names and interfaces can change, so follow the prompts shown for your device.

Pairing connects the Fitbit to your phone so the two can communicate and the tracker can sync its data. Once setup is complete, open the app to review the information that has synced.
Find your everyday controls
Use your own model’s on-device menus to locate daily stats, exercise controls, and settings. Depending on the device, settings may include quiet modes, screen wake, brightness, heart-rate tracking, and restart. Not every Fitbit offers every control or uses the same menu path; Google’s navigation instructions identify options by supported model.

For detailed menu instructions, start with Google’s Fitbit navigation guide and select your device where prompted.
Wear the tracker for more useful readings
For sleep tracking, Google recommends wearing the Fitbit about two to three finger widths above the wrist bone, with the band secure but not uncomfortably tight. If a sleep session does not appear, check when the device last synced, refresh the Sleep tab in the app, and restore the phone’s Bluetooth connection or manually sync if needed. Fitbit heart-rate tracking uses optical sensors: green LEDs detect changes in blood volume in wrist capillaries, and the device calculates a beats-per-minute reading. Fit, wrist movement, vigorous activity, cold weather, and other factors can affect that reading. It may not match exercise equipment or another wearable, so treat it as a device reading rather than a guaranteed measurement. If you have concerns about heart-rate data, Google advises contacting a physician. More detail is available in Google’s heart-rate tracking guidance.
Fix charging and syncing problems
If the Fitbit will not charge
- Confirm that you are using the charger made for your model.
- Check that the cable pins and device contacts are clean and positioned correctly.
- Try a computer USB port, safety-certified wall charger, or another safety-certified low-energy source.
- Follow the restart instructions for your specific Fitbit family; button sequences are not universal.

If the phone will not sync
Keep the phone and Fitbit close together, check that the app and device are ready, reset the phone’s Bluetooth connection, and restart both devices. If syncing still fails, Google’s update troubleshooting guidance recommends removing the old pairing and setting up the Fitbit again. For a red X or software error, its instructions describe removing the device from both the app and the phone’s Bluetooth settings before pairing again.

Care for the Fitbit and charger
Dry the device before charging, clean the contacts, use the supplied charger, and leave the device uncovered so it can ventilate. Avoid charging in direct sunlight. If you plan to store the device for a long time, follow Google’s separate charging guidance for trackers and watches rather than assuming their storage intervals are identical.
