To set up UPI, register in a participating UPI app using the mobile number linked to your bank account, select the account the app finds, and create a UPI PIN. Keep that PIN private. If a payment gets stuck or fails, check its status in transaction history before trying again, save its reference ID, and report the issue through the app or your bank.

How do I set up UPI?

UPI is an instant payment system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). You use it through a participating app that links to your bank account; the mobile number verified in the app must match the number registered with your bank for the app to fetch the account. See NPCI’s UPI FAQs for its registration guidance.

  1. Choose a participating UPI app. Consider whether it supports your bank, is accessible and available in a language you can use comfortably, and offers transaction history and a clear way to report problems. No one app is established here as safest or best for everyone.
  2. Register with the mobile number linked to your bank account. Follow the app’s verification flow using the relevant SIM. If the app cannot find your account, first check that the verified number matches the number your bank has on file.
  3. Select your bank account and set a UPI PIN. Follow the app’s prompts. NPCI distinguishes a UPI PIN from a bank MPIN and describes debit-card details as part of its PIN creation or reset process; the exact flow can vary by bank and app.
  4. Review the details before each payment. Check the recipient and amount shown on the confirmation screen before authorizing the transfer.

Why is my bank account not showing in the UPI app?

The first thing to check is whether the mobile number verified in the app is the same one registered with the bank account. If they do not match, the account may not be fetched. If they do match and the account still does not appear, use the app’s support option or contact your bank to check account-specific eligibility or registration issues; the available information does not establish a single cause for every missing account.

How do I use UPI safely?

Keep the UPI PIN secret

NPCI’s UPI FAQ says, “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone,” and says “your bank’s customer support will never ask for it.” A UPI PIN authorizes a transaction: enter it only when you intend to make the payment shown. You do not need to enter a PIN merely to receive money.

Check the payment you are authorizing

Confirm the recipient and amount on screen before entering your PIN. A completed transfer to the wrong recipient is different from a failed payment: NPCI says a completed UPI payment cannot be stopped with a stop-payment request. BHIM says NPCI cannot reverse a successful transfer simply because the sender entered the wrong recipient details; its guidance is to seek a refund from the recipient. See the BHIM FAQs.

If your phone or SIM is lost

Contact your bank and arrange to block the mobile number or SIM through the relevant bank and carrier process. NPCI’s FAQ advises blocking the number and contacting bank support.

UPI payment pending—should I pay again?

Do not make an immediate duplicate payment while the first transaction is unresolved. Open the app’s transaction history, inspect the status and reference ID, and wait for the status to update. NPCI notes that a delay at the beneficiary bank can leave a payment pending. Its FAQ describes a 48-hour period for the amount to reach the beneficiary once the beneficiary bank completes daily settlements; this is NPCI’s guidance, not a guarantee for every app, bank or transaction.

UPI failed but amount debited—how do I get a refund?

Save the transaction/reference ID, amount, date and time, and recipient details. Open the transaction in your UPI app and use its report or help option. If the app’s status is unclear or the reversal does not appear, contact your bank with those details.

Published timing guidance is not identical across sources. NPCI’s FAQ says declines should be reversed and advises contacting the bank if a refund does not happen immediately. BHIM’s FAQ gives a T+3-days reversal expectation for the failed-transaction flow it describes. Treat these as source-specific guidance, not a single universal refund deadline: handling depends on the transaction and the app or bank involved.

What if the app says successful but the recipient says they were not paid?

Check the recipient details and transaction reference in your history, then contact the app or bank before paying again. BHIM advises checking the details entered and contacting support or raising an in-app complaint. A transaction marked successful should not be treated as an ordinary failed-payment reversal; support needs the reference and status to investigate the specific case.

What if I sent money to the wrong person or suspect fraud?

Contact your bank promptly if you sent money to the wrong recipient or suspect fraud. A successful transfer is not automatically reversible through the failed-payment process, and NPCI’s UPI Help guidance routes suspected fraudulent-transaction complaints to the bank. Do not share your PIN with anyone claiming they can recover the money.

How do I complain about a UPI transaction?

  1. Open the transaction in your app’s history and select its report, help or complaint option, if available. BHIM says declined transactions can be reported from transaction details; NPCI’s UPI Help Guidelines describe an eligible failed merchant-payment complaint flow.
  2. Record the complaint or reference number and use the app or bank channel to track it. Keep the transaction ID, amount, date and time, and recipient details available.
  3. If the issue remains unresolved, ask your bank which RBI turnaround and compensation category applies to your transaction. RBI’s failed-transaction turnaround framework and framework publication set out turnaround and compensation principles, but the applicable timeline and compensation depend on the transaction category. Do not assume a single deadline or amount applies to every case.

For feature details, NPCI’s BHIM product page describes BHIM transaction and issue-reporting features.
